Does My Baby Have Colic?

For the past 4 nights like clock work around 9pm my 7 week old daughter will cry her little heart out for about 15-20 minutes non stop. It seems like she's uncomfortable or in pain when she's crying. I read up a little regarding Colic and it said that it usually happens at night and there is nothing you can really do about it but be patient. For you mothers out there with babies with Colic, what do you suggest? Does this sound like Colic behavior? Is it caused by what I'm eating?

What can I do next?

Does she go to bed at 9 or does she wake up at 9 and cry? I don't think it's colic, because like everyone else said it's such a short amount of time. I'm think she may be over tired at that time. Maybe try putting her down earlier you may avoid the crying part. If she's sound asleep at 9 she may sleep through the crying.
Best of luck!

3 of my 5 did this, usually around 7 in the evening, like clockwork! We just called it 'stress-relief' time (normally lasted 30 min to 1 hour), and made sure they were changed, fed, the usual. Once we resigned that this was going to happen, it let the stress off our shoulders, we expected it, and got through it. Take care,

Does not sound like Colic. Colic usually peaks at this age...you are luck that it is just normal infant fussiness. My son had colic for a month (I think, kinda blurry). He cried for hours. Usually in the night. Breastfeeding helped as did a wam bath and a hairdyer. You can use some of these remedies as well as motion, mylecon drops, ect for your baby as well. She could be overtired too.

15-20 minutes of crying is not colic in my experience. 4+ hours of crying a night is colic. 15-20 minutes or crying might just be overtired. Could be gas which simethicone drops might cure. One of my kids cried for over an hour (when I was breastfeeding) whenever I ate oreo's. I know it sounds weird, but I tested it and it was true. Every time I ate Oreo's. This, by the way, was not my colicky baby. My colicky baby cried like clockwork from 4 or 5pm until 9:30pm every night. She was inconsolable. She outgrew it by the time she was 6 months old. I hope this helps.

Sounds pretty normal for newborns--not necessarily colic. Try tightly swaddling, using white noise (a vacuum cleaner, hair dryer, or static from the radio, or loudly sushing), holding her on her side, and movement ( a swing, lightly bouncing her in your arms, or on an exercise ball). These are 4 of the 5 S's from Dr. Karp (can't remember the last one) (The Happiest Baby on the Block). Our little guy (now 2) seemed to cry his first 12 weeks of life, and the 5 S's helped considerably. Hopefully they'll work for your little one, too.

Hi R., I see you posted two questions and both go together to answer each. Yes chocolate can affect your baby, and it may be whats bothering your little girl. What you eat does get into your breastmilk and some foods can upset some children's tummys. So the chocolate you love may be bothering her. You are lucky its only causing 15-20 minutes of distress as some infants cay scream for hours on end from foods the M. eats. Broccoli, onions, spicy foods, and others can make a miserable baby. Colic has never really been figured out and usually lasts a lot longer, is usually a bit earlier in the evening, but if I were you, I'd stop the chocolate and see what happens. When my son was a few weeks old he had 1 evening of screaming crying and I thought maybe it was the start of colic. I laid him on his tummy across my thighs and just jiggled him up and down, and patted his back at the same time. All of a sudden he burped really big, spit up some, and messed his pants all at once! And never cried like that again! Also with another infant who cried a lot and was not a good burper, I found while burping after feeding, if I laid her back, sat her up, laid her back, sat her up,,, it helped dislodge air bubbles in her tummy and she burped much better than if I just had her on my shoulder patting her back. So try leaving the chocolate alone, and burping her better, and maybe it will help. Hugs to you both!

Only 15-20 minutes of crying doesn't necessarily sound like colic to me. My son had colic and reflux problems and let me tell you, the crying was NONSTOP! I'd try the pp's idea - the Mylacon drops - helps with gas issues. The best advice for new moms is just be patient. Sometimes you have to try LOTS of different things before you discover the issue. Work with your doctor and keep a journal of the crying to help you and your doctor discover the cause of the crying. Good luck, momma!

Nope not colic. Colic babies tend to cry for hours and I mean hours not 15-20 minutes. Could be gas and could be a million other things as well. Mylacon drops never worked for us actually she would vomit right after I gave them to her. Try doing a bicycle motion with her legs or holding her face down with your hand on her belly. These both helped my daughter with discomfort from gas. Hope you figure it out!

sounds more like gas. have you tried gas ex?? mylocon drops? Babies with "colic" cry all day all night, etc. Some babies just cry at night to fall asleep. My son did this. it's called the wicked hour or something like that. When my daughter fusses like this it usually means she wants to go to bed. I put her down and she it out like a light. But it means different things for different babies.
