breaking your water does not hurt.
Induction hurts because contractions hurt.
It's not called labor for nothing.

Yep. It hurts. Which is why most women when getting induced get an epidural. The uterus squeezes from all directions instead of in a fluid top down motion. Even the top down motion hurts, though. It's childbirth. It's goting to hurt.

Water breaking? OMG... BEST. Feeling. Ever. Ahhhhhhh. I'm not joking. It felt sooooo good. Huge alleviation of pressure. Like that release you get that is almost better than sex when you need to pee. GREAT feeling.

I didn't even feel anything when they broke my water. The doc just touched something and it all gushed out.

I do agree that being induced can make labor more intense right at the start but it can also just not work.

My daughter was induced twice on one child and neither time worked. She went home the 2nd time and then went into labor that weekend naturally.

No lies here, no sugarcoating: yes, induced contractions are painful- but so are natural contractions! Had induction with all 3 deliveries, epidurals with the 1st 2 & all natural with my last.

No, it did not hurt when they broke my water. :)

Yes, it hurts more. Are you planning on an epidural? That should take care of the pain.

Getting induced only hurts to the extent that it definitely leads to child birth which is pretty painful no matter how you go about it.

They broke my water with my first baby. It didn't hurt any more than them using their fingers to see how far you're dilated. My water broke on it's own with my second baby, but I still had Pitocin because I wasn't progressing with my labor.

Try not to be nervous. I know that's hard.....
Just focus on that sweet little bundle that's about to arrive.

I did not feel anything when they broke my water with child #2. I did not even know they had done it until I felt like I had peed myself. My contractions did come harder and faster. I had an epidural soon after!

I was induced with my first child and I didn't feel a thing because I was given Stay-dol and then my epidural. I literally watched my contractions on the monitor. Piece of cake! If you are dead set on going the natural route then yes, I think you can expect painful contractions. I vote for the meds. My kids are healthy, happy, strong and highly intelligent. Modern medicine is a blessing! Good luck and congratulations!

I don't know if you plan on using drugs. I did with all three of mine. I went into labor on my own with my first. It was not a good experience. Trying to place the needle while in extreme pain was difficult. I had to be induced with my second and third and i requested the epidural be placed BEFORE they even give me the pitocin. I told them they do not have to turn on the medicine, just at least place the catheter so that when I do start to feel contractions, all they have to do is turn on the flow. After a few questions from them and me absolutely requesting it, that is what the doctor did. It was great! The anesthesiologist was very nice and as soon as I felt any discomfort, he would come and increase my med flow! I did not have to wait til I reached a set dilation! I never felt anything. I was so relaxed. My labor lasted 5 hours and I pushed for 20-30 min at the most. I know this doesn't happen for everyone but that was my experience. I wish you lots of luck!

Both of mine were induced, so I don't know how much more intense the contractions were compared to normal labor. For me, the actual breaking of the water did not hurt. It did cause contractions to be felt pretty strong afterward, but I think that's how regular labor is! I had an epidural with both. I was happy to be induced. Everyone's experience is different. If I were deciding today, I'd opt for induction again. Good luck and congrats!

when i got induced i didnt feel any contractions till after they broke my water. i then got an epidural around 6cm.
if you think about it this way an induction is forcing your body to do what it isnt ready to do yet.

Nope...I didn't feel it and they had to break mine all 3 times. My second was induced and then it was an emergency c-section. His heart wouldn't handle the pitocin and the cord dropped beneath him...so it was a get him out now kind of deal. He's totally fine :). But no...I have never even heard of having your water broken being painful.

I had to be induced, so to speak, with my last two because my water broke but no real contractions. Didn't hurt anymore than the first two did but damn they came quickly! :)

Not complaining mind you, one hour of labor is kind of nice.

I had to be induced with both pregnancies. I was given Pitocin with the first and managed to avoid it with the second. I didn't like the Pitocin because while the nurses were able to regulate how strong the contraction were, they weren't able to control how fast the contractions were coming. Mine were really fast and I could hardly get a breath between. I had already had a dose of whatever the narcotic drug was and ended up getting an epidural and slept. They woke me to have me start pushing.

The second pregnancy my OB agreed I could skip Pitocin as long as everything was progressing. The OB broke my water but there wasn't much fluid. He went back to his office and I started walking the halls of the maternity ward, dragging my IV along. I was totally comfortable and had no drugs at this point. After wearing a path in the hallway carpet, I asked the nurse to check me. There had been a shift change so it was a new nurse. She looked and said, "you said the Dr broke your water?" Come to find out, your amniotic sac is like an onion with several layers. The Dr had broken through some but not all. (Personally, I suspect it was on purpose so he could finish his appointments for the day but who cares, its over now) The Dr came back, broke the remaining layers of the sac and then things started moving really fast! It hurt a little to break the sac but it wasn't horrible. Apparently there is some hormone in amniotic fluid that tells your body "its showtime!" and since its your second, your body remembers what's about to happen and gets down to business. I went from being dilated at 7 to a 10 in 3 contractions. No chance for an epidural this time.

Not sure if any of this helps and maybe because your baby knows what's scheduled, it'll decide to come on its own. Best of luck to you and your family.

Try castor oil before Thursday and you may go into labor on your own. It worked with my last one.

I've only had 1 child and I was induced 17 yrs ago. I didn't feel pain from the water break nor were my contractions that bad. I did get an epidural when the dr suggested.

Try not to worry, I think waiting up until the day you know you are going in for childbirth or surgery is worse.

I was not in anymore pain being induced than I thought I would be had I just gone into labor. I was actually less nervous about.

I had my water broke with my 3rd & 4th and yes it hurt, but no more than someone coming up and pinching you. The pain is gone as quick as it came.

For being induced... I was induced with my 4th child. Yes it did make the contractions more intense but honestly it was no worse then the other 3 that I had naturally. I was only in "hard labor" ( the only pain I had) for 15 mins before my son arrived. He was also a natural baby as he came before the pain meds did.

I had both my kids natural (no drugs) and had my water broken both times. With my second I was induced. Yes, it was more intense. I dont know about more painful. It was just the contractions we more consistent. I think I remembered what it was like the second time around too, and tensed up more. If you can relax and take deep breaths, dont tense it should be about the same. It did not hurt to have my water broken either time. I didnt even know they did it until I felt the gush.

I mean the contractions and what not hurt regardless....But having your water broken does not. It feels odd...no pain though.

I was induced with all three, to some extent. I opted to have an Epidural because of this. I did not have the tolerance to have pain brought on and then not know how long to expect to be in this shape:)

I was induced with my first. When they broke my water, I just felt alot of pressure and no pain. I think each women is different on their pain tollerance though. The contractions did hurt, but tell me what contraction dosen't. I know that probably didn't help, but every labor is unique and different for each woman. I was in labor with my first for eight hours and pushed for two. My second, in labor for two hours and after two pushes she was out.

I have had 3 inductions. The last one I told them to give me the epidural while they are starting the induction medicine. I had one child come naturally without it and it really was a much better experience. So I knew to have the pain meds ready for the last one. Makes it not so bad.

Like you said, the Pitocin makes you have really strong, hard contractions. Breaking the water doesn't hurt any more than a regular cervical exam. The OB broke my water right before it was time to start pushing with my third baby and I couldn't even tell she was doing it.

Im due on Wed and have a Drs. appt on Thurs to check things out and to schedule an induction if need be - I so hope not though. Thursday is still quite a few days away so you may just go into labour on your own =)
With my first I was 5 days late and facing an induction but luckily my body took care of things before it came to that so I dont have actual experience with how it feels. They did however have to break my water for me at 9cms and it just felt really warm lol but no pain - at 9cms you wont be focused on a bit of discomfort from them breaking your water. i was just worried that the contractions would get even worse than they were and they sure did. But I doubt they will break your water until its necessary and like I said at that point that 'pain' or discomfort will be the last thing on your mind

Being induced doesn't hurt at all. I was induced with two of my children. Please don't be nervous! Alot of women that I know have been induced and I have never heard them say it was painful. It's just like your water breaking on it's own, I didn't think it was any different. I guess some may have thought it was painful but in my opinion it really wasn't at all.. Good luck and hopefully you have a smooth delivery. Cingrat's on baby number two!

I had one vaginal birth, not induced, and my water broke right at the end on it's own. I didn't feel a thing but I was in intense labor with no epidural so I think I could have lost my arm and not felt that either. Good luck to you Thursday and CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I've had to be induced for all but one of mine...the first was because I had low amniotic fluid. I was MAYBE dilated to a 1...that one hurt the worst - I believe it was because my body had not done much of anything on its own. Since then, I have been induced at a 6 (stalled for...8 hours? something like that...the being stalled was way more not fun than being induced)...induced at a 3 and at a 4. The one time I was not induced...I had been dilated to a 4 for almost a month and by the time I had done EVERYTHING else that I and my midwife could suggest and she felt she could break my water...I was so exhausted from constant contractions, my son was way bigger, and it was a much more difficult labor and delivery than any of my induced ones (other than my first...and yes, although very well worth it...it was HORRIBLE (it was also my first...that could have had something to do with it...). I've never had my water break naturally...but it's never hurt when they've done...induced or otherwise.

btw - being stressed and uptight can make the contractions a whole lot worse than any induction (in my opinion)...so relax...you'll have your little one with you soon (unlike me...who still has 5 more months left...can we say jealous??)

breaking my water did not hurt. I think it depends upon your pain tolerance. When my contractions started they were right on top of eachother so yep, that sort of hurt but after 10, they didn't really bother me.
I think the worst part was not knowing when the contractions will start. It took 5 hours.
You can do this. You will be fine.

First, I just have to say everyone is different but for me, the doctor "breaking" my water itself did not hurt! HOWEVER, as soon as she did, my contractions got harder and THAT hurt!! I did not have any inducing drugs nor did I use an epidural. I was totally drug free and was so happy I went that route. Both my babies were delivered drug free and I wouldn't have had it any other way!

No, there is nothing painful about having your water broken - I've been through that 4 times and there were never any issues. Just lots and lots of liquid!

If you are going to get an epidural, get it before they break your water.

I just went through that process eight weeks ago. They gave me something 12hours before they would induce me. I don't remember what it is called but it prepares your body to be induce and it helps your body to dilate and can start contractions. In my case it didn't and I was in all kinds of pain-I won't lie it sucked but my MIL was there and she would massage my lower back and it helped ALOT.

It didn't hurt when they broke my water. I was expecting it to hurt but I don't remember feeling anything but the liquid down my legs. At that point they still hadn't given me the pitocin because the other medicine worked wonders.

What hurt was the weeks following my c-section, because being induced oftentimes will lead to c-section.

They don't automatically break your water when they induce. I was induced with my second, and my water broke on its own. There's no reason to think your water won't break on its own just because you're being induced.

NO More than just having a baby does! Tell the little one to come out now!! then you won't be waiting and nervous til Thursday, ohmygosh!!

I was induced with both of my kids. First with cytotec (the little pill thing they stick up you). When my dr. did break my water finally, I didn't even feel a thing (except for the uncomfortableness of her checking me). She didn't even mean to break my water. She was checking me to see how far I was and then says "oops" and pulls her hand out right away.
My 2nd time was with the balloon thing they put up there to force you to dialate. I had some bad cramping. When she came back I was at 6cm and she broke my water on purpose. Then they started pitocin, and my epidural failed and so I felt EVERYTHING. I was blacking out because of the pain and I just hope I didn't break any of the nurses fingers, lol! She was great though. I think I would have been fine if I was prepared to go with out an epidural, but it was unexpected and I wasn't mentally prepared. Good luck!
