Does Anyone Have Bulging Discs in Lower Back? Help with Pain/discomfort!

I hurt my lower back playing with my daughter a couple months ago. It's never gone back to normal, so I went to an orthopedist who said I have bulging discs. He gave me steroids and ordered an MRI. I'm going back on thursday to discuss the MRI results with him. I opted not to take the steroids because, at the time, I wasn't hurting, I was just popping and cracking and really tight. This week, though, I am hurting and it's been a real challenge. I really don't want to take the steroids - primarily because of the weight gain, but I need help getting through this weekend! Anyone out there have a good idea? I'm trying ibuprofen and naproxen, along with stretching, but neither have done too much to help. Or, for those who have used steroids, how bad was the weight gain? Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

I have major back and disc problems due to my car accident that turned my life upside down. I went to a "regular" back doctor and he flat lined me on the table. Since you are in the Keller area like me I highly reccommend Spine Team Texas for all of your back needs. I have had two surgeries so far and I am about 80% back to normal. They are amazing and yes I did have a slight weight gain of 30 lbs but I am watching my calories and working out as much as I can with three kids. I know the weight gain is just a small side effect and so does my husband, the main thing is that you just get back to normal for you. I do hope you feel better soon and one thing that use to help me was a long hot bath, a few meds and then my husband would massage me till I fell asleep.

Hi C.! Oh yea, you want to try the steroids because lots of times that can help those disc move back to the right position when the inflammation goes down.If you happen to gain a couple pounds so what! I had back surgery at 27! I delt with the extreme pain thinking it would just get better on its own; like a sore muscle. It doesn't and the longer you go the worse it becomes so at that point the steroids did NOTHING for me and I had surgery.Talk about gaining weight! After surgery you can't do ANYTHING! 4 weeks before you can ride in a car, 6 weeks before you can drive, no lifting ANYTHING! It's bad for a mom!My husband has had 2 surgeries and is starting to have pain again now.I'm almost 35 now and I know I've done something to mine again too; but I have no insurance:( ... SO, if you do use it and get better, it's nothing to mess around with! Good luck!

The steriods he gave you are probably "pulse" steriods. You are not going to see a lot of weight gain with it. The reason that weight gain is a problem, is water weight (which you will lose after you stop the steriods) and the increased appetite. You will be extremely hungry. If you can keep yourself from indulging you will be fine. The worst thing about the steriods is the insomnia. My DH was literally laying on top of my one night at 3 am because I just couldn't shut down. I will tell you though it was worth it. I felt SO much better on the steriods. The steriods decrease the inflammation in a way that Ibuprofen and Naproxen cannot. And the inflammation is a large part of the pain. Take the steriods and feel better. Good luck with your MRI results.
