Do Your Kids Have Their Own Playroom?

My girlfriend is trying to move their house around so her 2 young children have an actual playroom. Their house is old, the rooms are small, but she'd like to have just her daughters bed and bedroom furniture in that room, then the baby's nursery furniture in another room, then a playroom, so there's no excuse for toys to be everywhere. (I support her on this).

When we had a 'real house', 3 stories, we had it so the girls room was the entire 3rd floor, and all their toys were up there as well. There was no reason for toys to be strewn about the house; it was great!

Our house now is stupid small, but we're going to be moving in May. The home we're moving into is not a whole lot bigger, but I'd like to maybe work it out so we have a playroom. Our previous house had the best layout EVER! I miss having a playroom!

So, do your kids have a playroom? Is it JUST a playroom, or is it a playroom/office, playroom/living room, playroom/bedroom?

What do you think the pros/cons to having one room completely dedicated to being a playroom?

(I'm all for it, just curious as to what other people do). I'd gladly sacrifice an office for a playroom!

What can I do next?

My girls are 9 and 11 now and value their "privacy", so they each have their own room and keep all their stuff in there. But when they were smaller (like 2,3,4 yrs old to about 6 or7), instead of them each having their own bedroom, they had one room to sleep in (just the beds and side tables) and one to play in (for ALLLLLL their GAZILLIONS of toys). It worked out GREAT at the time. We also had a large built-in window seat with storage in the family room so that if any toys "accidentally" made their way downstairs, they could be shoved into that window seat at the end of the day or if guests were coming over. But all in all, yeah, I'm a *big* fan of playrooms...I HATE seeing random toys strewn around my house, really HATE it.

We have a game room/family room upstairs. It serves mainly as a 'hang out' spot, watch t.v, read etc. Toys usually stay in their rooms, not always, but usually.

Interesting question. Greg and Nick each have their own bedroom.

We have a formal living room - which is "my" room and we have the family room which we consider "their" room - that's where they hang out with their friends and play games, etc.

We only have two floors so ONE DAY we'll buy a home with a basement and that will be theirs. So I guess they do have a play room....just never really thought about it.

Our kids each have their own playroom. Only we call it a bedroom. ;)

I actually probably wouldn't mind it, if we had tons of otherwise useless space and still had small kids. But ours are 10 and 13, and their "toys" are mostly electronics these days, lol.

We have a playroom adjacent to the kitchen, it's on old 1960's home with an odd but open layout. So I can see them when in the kitchen. My 'office' is right in the center. It is not in a closed area, but I'm okay with that so my kids can still play with my supervision, without me having to go into a separate room.

Here is a picture of it... it does not always look this clean! But it makes it pretty easy to put toys away and such.

I now have a lego organizer and two cute tubs for toys on the left side as well that replaced the toybox.

Hi, R.:

We have a guest room, TV room, play room. The children
do not have that many toys. We have music where the children sing
and dance. We have a room out back that has a trampoline in it.
They don't have alot of toys to throw around. They have
to keep them picked up. That's how they learn to take care of their
things.
Just my idea.

We have a really big family room with an office nook, some built in cabinetry, and 2 large open areas. All of their toys are either in the built-ins, or in some Ikea toy storage furniture along the walls. It is great to have a place for all their toys, but I did have to be flexible and let them bring some toys to their bedroom. All the toys that are choking hazards must be kept in their bedroom so the baby doesn't get them. That has been working very well for us.

Our family room is our playroom, in that the kids just kind of took it over when they were born. It has our TV in it, and a couch and table, and other than that, it is entirely theirs.

Downsides: When I want to watch TV, I know the kids are watching whatever I am watching.

Upsides: Everything else about it is an upside. I love it. ^_^

My kids each have a room, that is more than spacious even with their furniture. They each have toy chests in their rooms yet somehow the toys end up everywhere throughout the day.
They would rather play in the living room, dining room, or the kitchen and as long as by the end of the day everything is cleaned up I don't mind.

We just got a puppy who is chewing on my sons smaller plastic toys.. Maybe it will be more of an incentive for him to keep his toys in his room :)
