Do You Tie down Your TV?

Just saw a show about how many kid injuries and deaths there are by tv's falling over on kids. We have old school tv's (see prior posts...lol) and I have had them strapped to the entertainment center for YEARS! (kids are 15, 12 and 9)

I hope everyone is aware of the danger of this and if they don't already take precautions, that they will start to. Have you tied down your TV?

What can I do next?

Never have. We now have HDTV's and one is on the wall, the other in my room.
Only once was I afraid. When my then 15 yo and his buddy were rough-housing and went to move the piano. I was more afraid of the piano getting damaged than the boys though.

I never tied a TV down and never had kids that pull them down and mine were ruffians. Currently our 62 inch is mounted to the wall but that is more about ascetics than safety.

I remember when my older two were young and there was a story about kids watching Barney and hugging the TV and pulling it over on themselves. Made me wonder why anyone would let their kids watch Barney. :p

Reminds me of an old Jeff Foxworthy bit, he was describing his bachelor furniture: a board laid across two cinder blocks with the t.v sitting on top. His buddy asked him "aren't you worried about the kid pulling the t.v over on top of himself?" Jeff replied "he'll only do it once..."
To answer your question, no. We only have one old school t.v, it's in the 12 yr olds room.
Glad you brought it up though.

A Geographical twist.....In the past I've had the TV anchored to the wall. Didn't have kids but it was after the SF earthquake in the 80s. A friend always did as she recounted an earthquake in So Cal where she lived at the time. The only thing that fell over was the TV onto the dogs bed, which fortunately he wasn't in.

So my first thought was Earthquake, not climbing kiddos...... Which a lot of things should be anchored to the wall, bookcases etc. I know our old piano would topple if an earthquake was severe enough but I have no idea how to anchor it to the wall without destroying it.

No my tv isn't tied down. My youngest is 15.

Growing up my cousin was climbing on the stand for the fish tank and it fell on him and shattered into a billion pieces. He only got one small scratch on his forehead which bled like a sacrificial lamb.

He didn't even need stitches for that cut. Unfortunately none of the fish survived and the tank was not replaced. None of us had any idea it would topple over like that. Our parents were freaking out at hearing that huge crash and seeing my cousin under what was left of the tank dripping wet and gravel covered and then all that blood and crying. He was more startled than anything.

I had just finished telling him to get down from there. He didn't listen. Scary moments but a great laugh after the fact.

My 2 year old recently figured out that he can turn the tv on by hitting the buttons on TOP of the tv (for those times I hide the remotes)... he climbs on the t.v. table; he's going to pull this over on himself! Rascal!

No, haven't tied it down, but we are going to wall mount it when we move. In the meantime, I'm watching him like a hawk!

And no, I never had to tie it down when the other 2 were little. I had a huge, old school t.v. If they pulled it down on top of themselves, I think I would have been impressed, that sucker was gigantic ;)

Both my TV's are low, practically on the ground. I've heard too many stories. (One is old school, on the ground in the playroom, no chance of tipping, the other is flat screen on a very low table).
A TV fell on my 6 year old niece (she's fine) when my sister and BIL were out of the room. My neice was really scared and learned her lesson. They still don't know what the heck she was doing, as my sister says "probably trying to kiss Justin Beiber on the TV screen".

Yes, when we had tube TVs, one was on the wall, like a hospital, and the other was strapped to the stand. Now, we have flat screens that are mounted to the wall. We also anchor all of our furniture that is tall and skinny. My kids are constantly climbing furniture. And we have window guards up as well, I think one of the few in California....I am a safety freak.

No BUT I have never and never would put a TV on a dresser or a narrow platform. I always insisted that it be placed on a lower, wider stand. And the TV has never really been in a spot to be close enough to the wall to tie it. My sister put a 20 inch on her dresser and accidently knocked it off once day, broke her toe. It did not fit on the dresser. Our current TV is a plasma flat tv and is attached to the stand. One of the other problems is people put them on the wall and they are not attached correctly so it can still fall off. Doesn't matter if it is lighter, still causes harm. With all these injuries and deaths, they have indicated the tv was on the dresser or table. They make tv stands for a really good reason.

Yes! I rather be safe than sorry! We also put 12 inches of woodchips under our swingset when we had one! So we are a little safety crazy but that has to do with 25 years of working in childcare and seeing and hearing too many stories of children getting injured.

When we lived in earthquake areas, certainly.

Our last one was a hand me down rear projection affair that rolled, weighed about 200lbs, was 5 feet from floor to top, 4 feet from front to back, and 6 feet from side to sid. There was no "pulling" it over on someone!!! It was a VW bug sized monstrosity. (So happy it died).

Now? Not yet.

But it's about to get bolted to the wall, once I can cut some drywall out. LOL funny thing about reeeeeeally thin TVs (it's half an inch thick, and weighs maybe 10lbs), the PLUGS (for the xbox, dvd, etc) stick out twice as wide as the TV! No way to get it on the wall without cutting out drywall. And to attach it to the wall, well, it will be attached to the wall.

No, it's a new flat screen and very light and sits on a low, wide stand. But then, my child is almost 7, too. If I had a toddler, I might.
