Do You Put Your Kids in Comfy Clothes for Nap Time?

My mom called and told me I forgot to put 'nap clothes' in my son's bag this past weekend when my parents were watching the kids, that she had to put him in his pajama's... I was laughing, because all 3 of my kids always just napped in whatever they happened to be wearing at the time, whether it was a sun dress or jeans.

But I guess I could see where she was coming from... I'm not going to change what I'm doing since it works, I was just curious if anyone else put their kiddos in comfy clothes just for nap time?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

@Peter, funny you should ask, my mom said he took a 2 1/2 hour nap which is unheard of... but then again, I think he was exhausted from being in a 'new' place too... not sure! Maybe my mom's onto something ;) Too bad I'm not changing it up now, LOL!

Also, I wouldn't change them based on the extra laundry it would create, no parent needs THAT! ;)

My kids fought sleep to the point where it looked like narcolepsy when they did fall asleep. What they were wearing at the time was of no concern to me. :)

All my son's clothes were comfortable all of the time.
The only reason to change them into something else before nap time is if they are too dirty to wear into bed.
If you're taking a nap after time in play ground mulch or the sandbox - chances are the child needs a bath and a change of clothes anyway just to get the crud out of their hair and so it's not trailed all over the house.

Never heard of "nap clothes."

My kids, always napped in whatever they were wearing at the time.
And if they were wearing it all day, then it must be "comfy" anyway.

To me this is a funny question. I do home childcare. If a parent/guardian ASKED me to or even *gasp* insisted in some way that I change their child for nap, I would have to laugh at them. Sorry! No way kids can come to home daycare or worse yet, a center, and be needing to change or be taking their jeans off cuz they are uncomfy (I totally agree there on the uncomfy...I wear lazy pants...black sweats of some sort...got my "fancy" cargo ones on today...they ALMOST look like real pants..and I am not even napping all day! LOL)

But most of my kids (age 4 and under here) wear some sort of sweats or knit pants/leggings. Today is a rare day where a set of siblings (18 mos and 3 yrs old) are actually both in jeans.

Thanks for the chuckle! Now its back to lunch prep while the helper plays with those kiddies (dumb neck thing still not resolved so still need the helper. Ugh)

Nope.. Even in daycare they slept in their day clothes. They just take off their shoes.

Heck they fall asleep in their car seats, ion the floor, in their high chairs. They usually do not need a change of clothes.

I think yo mama is yanking your chain!

My MIL does that to us too - everything suddenly is done like Suzy Homemaker. My wife and BIL laugh as they call BS on it - she never did it for them.

I think it's a grandparent thing - suddenly sugar is ok, but they've got to keep asking "have you checked on little man?" (as if constant checking is necessary to ensure his health during a nap).

With my oldest I never did. My daughter, the only way I can get her to take a nap is to let her sleep in her "summer pajamas". Never would have thought about it before her. My son when he was napping would sometimes take his jeans off & nap in just his tshirt.

Well, I only have boys so frilly clothes don't live at my house. I have always thought that babies should be dressed comfortably except for maybe special occasions (weddings, christenings). My favorite baby clothes are a onesie and the carters pull on pants with the roll cuff. My boys wore them from birth until 2ish... I think they are cute and see no need for babies to be bothered with jeans - no matter how stylish.

I don't change my kids for nap. I assume they are comfortable enough. That being said, my 5 year old still naps sometimes and he wears a uniform to kindergarten so he will change from his uniform (khaki dockers style pants and a polo shirt) to "play clothes" - t-shirt and either sweat pants or pull on shorts.

My boys are almost always in comfy clothes anyway ~ sweats/track pants and t-shirts (either long sleeve or short, depending on weather). They do wear jeans, but not all that often and usually only if we are going somewhere. Especially at the age of 3 and using the potty ~ he can't quite figure out the buttons/snaps yet on jeans.

No naps happening here any more.
But I remember when my son was little, if he had jeans on & wanted to get into his covers---UNcomfortable!
Usually he's slip off his jeans for nap time.
Otherwise--same clothes.

My mom and I were just talking about this the other day. My older sister would change my oldest nephew (her first child) into pj's for every nap he took since birth. I remember thinking she was nutty for doing this and there was at least one time she got upset with me for not changing him when I was baby-sitting. My mom wonders if this contributed to my nephew’s sensory issues.
I just think why would anyone disturb a sleeping child to change their clothes or create more stress getting them to lie down. I have always just left my daughter in whatever she was wearing, but I usually keep her in comfy clothes no matter what. I could see if they were dressed up with a jacket and tie or a dress with tights, clothes that would just be annoying to sleep in.

When my kids were still little enough to nap I never changed them out of their clothes to do so. They mostly wore onesies under sweats or cotton pants & a shirt, unless my daughter was wearing a dress. They were always fine.

Depends on what they are wearing. If they are in dresses than I would leave them be. If they were in jeans I would usually take them off and let them sleep in underwear or change into sweats. But I think that's because *I* think jeans are uncomfortable to sleep in.
However, I would never wake a sleeping child to change them!

My older daughter is like that, in fact I use to be like that, before I got married and I went from naked to old pajamas, wow how things have change, lol.
Anyway, I truly believe that she would sleep more comfortable on pajamas, I have buy her different types, she would still sleep on her clothes!
When she was younger I either make her or let her be, depend.
But now she is 13, it became one of those things where I pick my bottles and this one was not worth to fight.
I did told her that her clothes would get older faster if she sleep with them, and also more smelly meaning that they would need to go to warmer set on the washer, which again mean they would get older, but besides that I let her be.
At least she is not wearing her pajamas outside home, that would put me in a predicament!

ADD: Sorry, I miss the "nap" part.. (gulp!)
No, I didn't change my toddler (or my teen, lol) to "nap clothes", I most likely would just have end up with a cranky kid in cute pajamas.

No way, that is a good way of making extra laundry. If the clothes are too binding, for example jeans, then I may take them off and let them nap in their little tee shirts and undies/diapers but to put on a different set of clothes...no.

However, if she got a longer nap out of him due to a routine like bedtime maybe you're right, she may have the answer. But still just taking off some stuff, not adding a new set.

I put my kids in comfy clothes at all times, unless we are going to church with my in-laws. Nothing drives me crazier than people who dress their kids up everyday and then don't let them do anything fun because they don't want them to get dirty. Every parent should invest in some dadgum garanimals (one size bigger because they are cheap and will shrink). Then they could sleep or play or watch tv and be comfy, comfy, comfy.

sometimes my son will take his jeans and shirt off if he's napping in his bed, but not if he's on the couch.

my daughter will sometimes undress to her undies depending on what she's wearing, but for the most part, at daycare just naps in the clothes she's wearing.

I only change what they are wearing if it's like jeans or something really warm. My kids tend to sweat in their sleep and I don't want them to overheat . I just find jeans uncomfortable to sleep in myself so I will change those.

The only time I changed either of my daughters for naptime was if they were wearing jeans (I wouldn't want to sleep in jeans) or a hooded and/or zipper shirt (I was afraid they'd choke or get strangled by the hood part in their sleep - strange, I know)!

My girlfriend and I were just talking about this the other day and she told me that she puts her daughter in her jammies for each and every nap!

Funny, I've never heard of such a thing, BUT it makes sense that you'd want your kiddos comfy, right? I put my girls in comfy clothes right from the beginning (leggings, yoga pants, soft t-shirts) mostly b/c it just looked easier for them to climb up on the couch and stuff like that. I always thought teeny kids in jeans looked adorable, but uncomfortable. Like they couldn't quite move exactly the way they would have if they'd been in leggings! So, I actually created a monster. My 8 year old still hasn't worn a pair of jeans to this day (she has branched into jeggings this year though) and my 10 year old - 5th grade - just started wearing jeans THIS YEAR!!! And not b/c she asked me to buy them. I just picked up a couple pairs for her one day and stuck them in her drawer. She's one of those kids who opens a drawer and puts on whatever is in there. She does say she still prefers those little yoga pants from Children's Place. But she's going to be in middle school soon - I had to get her out of the yoga pants!!

I don't. But my mom sometimes would do this when she watched my son. I'd comehome and find him wearing pajama pants or sometimes no pants and just a diaper. She thought jeans were too uncomfortable for him to nap in. Now, sometimes when I change his diaper before nap I'll ask him if he wants pants or no pants and he usually will want them on, but I've found that sometimes when he's wearing jeans he'll say no pants.

I ALWAYS put my daughter in her 'jam jams' or something like that for nap time. I mean technically its the same as when they go to bed just for a much shorter amount of time and when I put her down for a nap that is MY time so I want to make sure she is as comfy as can be
ETA: My daughter has never been the type of child to 'pass out' anywhere but her bed except for when she was just a few months old. But as soon as we started putting her down for a scheduled nap she literally has not once fallen asleep on the couch or in her car seat or at the table, and shes 2
