Do You Let Your Little Kids Use the Computer?

My oldest is 6 and I dont allow any of them to use our computer. Mainly I just dont want them breaking our laptop. My daughter has computer class at school and thats her first experience with using a computer. I was surprised at how many kids her age were allowed to use a computer at home. Are my kids in the minority?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

I really just wont let them use it because laptops are easy to break. Trust me, we have been through a couple. Im not really against them doing educational games on the computer. I think what they do in school is just fine. I dont want them on my computer at home.

Yup, since they were all little.
We are a computer family. We're all programmers, electronics engineers, and general gadget junkies.I learned how to count in binary on my fingers in second grade from my dad, in the 70s.
We do have rules and limits. They don't have unlimited access whenever they want.
They do learning activities a lot on them. They use them for school projects and research.
We don't let computers replace a good old book or face to face time with family and friends.
There are so many benefits to a well used computer!

No idea of the numbers/ what other parents do...

...but we started letting out son use the computer at age 2.5. He's had his own since he was 5 (old hand-me-down pc), and saved for 3 years to buy his own macbook when he was 8 (he's now 9).

He does/uses it for games, schoolwork, email, research, calendar, music, video editing (adobe aftereffects, mostly), sound editing (garageband, mostly), scripting/programming, skype, photos, movies... tons of stuff.

I let my grandkids play on my computer ages 3, 5 and 7. They just have to treat it correctly, they know the rules. They love the webcam.

My daughter has been using technology (iphone, computer and now ipad) since she was 2.5. My husband is a computer application developer and I was in my former career as well. So, we basically breath the stuff around here. So, when we got our iphones, we downloaded educational apps to keep her busy on long car rides. She loves learning on the computer and it's good for her motor skills to use the mouse. Now, at age 4, she has an actual computer class in preK.

I haven't read the other responses, and please don't be mad, but I think you're holding your kids back by not letting them learn the computer. The world is technology driven now, we can't change that. By the age of 2 all 3 of my kids were familiar with starfall.com and playing color, number, and letter games. Now they are 8, 6, and 4 and they all have their own computers (my husband is great at fixing old free ones!) and they love to use them. Time is limited of course, but they learn great things from using the computer, so why not? And just sit and watch them while they use it!! Don't be afraid if it gets broken :).

I let my 5 and 3 yr old play on mickeymouseclubhouse website. My 5 yr old has been able to play the games on their without since she was 4. Her school is suppose to have a computer skill class for the kindergarteners this year too.

My son's been using our home computer in some kind of way since about 2 1/2. Playing on Starfall, watching videos, "typing" etc.

We have a children's browser "Kidoz" that only allows access to specific sites I put on there (clicks on the thumbnails), and gives him an email account that can only get and send messages from/to the contacts I add (and they route through my email). So he does that stuff pretty independently.

Yep, my kids have been using the computer since they were little. (they're 10 and almost 8 now). I really noticed they were figuring out their way around on the computer when my 5th grader was in 2nd grade. She had to so some research online about animals, and had no problem doing all of it herself. I looked over her shoulder for awhile, until I figured out she didn't need me. In my opinion, you might not be doing your kids any favors by keeping them away from the computer. I also have a laptop (a mac, which isn't cheap) so to make it safe I put it on the table in the kitchen and make sure it's level and that no food/drink is anywhere near it. And if my kids are playing around online I take a peak at what they're looking at every once in awhile. Neither one of my kids has figured out how to erase the history of online searches, so I do check to see what they were looking at. So far it's only been things like American Girl. Sometimes they google things like "the world's biggest fart" which always makes me laugh. I'm going to look into some kind of parental control thing soon. I'm afraid my 5th grader is going to begin looking for (or accidentally finding) inappropriate things. Anyway, I think it's good for kids to play on the computer and learn how it all works. Last year, in 4th grade, my daughter had to do a big power point presentation for school. She'd never done pp before, but she opened up the program and just ran with it. I think familiarity with the computer in general helped her figure it all out - without mom's help.
