My husband has recently been diagnosed with high blood pressure.. The dr recommended that he exercise... Of course exercise is good for everyone. I was going to get him a membership at the local gym. They offer a 3 month or 6 month membership that is reasonable..

He wants to get a exercise bike for the basement...He says he will ride it.. I doubt it.. Everyone I know that has a peice of exercise equipment uses it to dry laundry...

Does anyone have a recommendation for a exercise bike or treadmill that you actually use???

What can I do next?

My husband loves his eliptcal. Try different models you can find the model with the least knee impact and the smoothest stride. It helped him loose 50lbs. and me 15. Good luck.

I personally hate to work out. I avoid it like the plague, however, I have been using our treadmil (which my hubby uses every day). It is a proform and works great. We have it placed in our basement so I or my kids can watch tv while I work out. Do to the fact that I hate working out, I do a combo of walk/jog/run. I have lost weight this way, so I'm not complaining. I also have a DVD with an exersise ball, that I really enjoy. I also bought another DVD that has four different work outs on it, all cardio. I like to mix it up to try and keep it fresh. You can get workout DVD's at Walmart for $5. I use a couple of Kathy Smith and the other is Gunner something. I think the thing to look at is what he will stick with and not get bored; at least that was my problem :)

I love my treadmill. Especially when it's yucky outside. :)

I use my excercise equipment, however, it does take dedication and discipline. They say that walking is great for high blood pressure and I'm sure riding a bike would be too. So I do recommend a bike or treadmill. I have a treadmill that I use (I don't recommend mine though lol). Mine is a manual and most people probably wouldn't like that...but I do. I want to get an elliptical, but I don't think your husband would stay disciplined with that. I can't recommend specific brands..but I do think he will work out at home on a bike in front of the tv better than going to the gym. Remember...you can't force him to be disciplined...that is something he will have to do himself. Good luck!!!

I don't have a treadmill or a bike, but I have an elliptical that I love. I have a Horizon E70. However, if I bought another one, it would have different programs to use. I've had it for over 3 years and use it mainly when it is too yucky to be outside (about 3x/week).

The key to my success in using it is a wireless mouse so that I can watch things on the computer while I exercise. Otherwise I get bored with reading or staring at the walls. Make sure wherever you set it up has entertainment to help with the motivation.

Good luck!

Hi Lisa, My husband and I have always worked out. We ran with a running club for many years and always had gym memberships.....then our son was born I was 42 and my husband was 47 years old. We waited for this child our entire marriage so all of sudden running clubs and gym memberships took second place. Our son was our fucus.
What we do now is we have a treadmill, we both use it 5 to 6 days a week. It has been the best purchase for us. My son is now 7 years old and that treadmill is still going strong.
I like getting up in the mornings and getting on my treadmill right away. I no longer want to put on my cute little gym outfits and work out with a class. I like to crawl onto my treadmill with my junky old clothes watch Oprah that I have taped and I will run/walk for 60 minutes.
I feel fit and the exercise helps keep me sane.
We could never be with out our treadmill and if anyone hung a piece of laundry on it they would be in big trouble....:)
I think the key is to find an excecise your husband likes to do and buy that machine. I used to love the stair master, it was a good work out also. Go to sporting good stores and try out all the different equipment.
Good Luck to your husband.

I have a treadmill that I use quite often. I have tried various things, bikes, ellipticals, etc. I find the treadmill the best because it is easiest to set a pace and have to follow it. I found that i could slack more with a bike or elliptical. I finally got a nice treadmill and I think that made a difference. I paid about $1000 for one that is wider, it has a little built in fan and really easy to use buttona and programs (it is a NordicTrack) and it is very comfortable. It also makes a difference where you put it in the house. I have to have TV for sure. And, before my basement was finished, I never used it because it was down there. Now, I can use the treadmill and my family can be down there watching TV or playing or whatever too. Walking and running has done wonders for my blood pressure! Good luck!

Lisa,

You may want to buy something secondhand, Craigslist is a good place, to try out before you spend a ton of money on something he won't use. If he doesn't use it you can just resell it on Craigslist and you won't be out any money. I tried an exercise bike and it didn't work for me and I don't have room for a treadmill.

Good luck

I have a Gazelle Freestyle machine, I like it and use it 3 times a week. I like how it folds, and I never hang anything on it.
I also have seatless peddle bike from sharper image (you sit on a chair or the floor to change the angle your working)so my daughter and I exercise and watch the travel channel pretending were going exploring.
The reviews on the gazelle are bad, but I find I can easily do the different positions (bending your knees a bit targets thys & glutes, I can really get a good cardo work out using the hand bars)
I think they have them at JCPennys if you want to try it.

Maybe if you put a TV in front of the exercise bike he would ride it while watching, that way its not so boring. it would help a lot if there were no other chairs in the room to choose from (like in a den or basement).

I agree with the post about trying Craigslist first. You can probaby get a good deal on there. We had a treadmill for years and it was a Nordic Track (the wider base was SO worth it), but sold it to some friends a few years ago and replaced it with two elliptical machines that we keep in our garage. I use the elliptical machine 2-3 times per week, BUT my husband and I are both runners who have been working out regularly for years.
Try Craigslist first! And you might want to take your husband to Sears to try out an elliptical, treadmill and an exercise bike, too.
(And we had an exercise bike in our basement growing up... it was a Ferris Wheel for my Barbies!)
