Do You Have a Stainless Steel Sink?

We replaced our sink and garbage disposal. We went with a stainless steel sink because I thought it would be more durable/easy to clean up. Well, it's not easy to clean. It always looks smudgy. What do you use to clean yours up? What kind of sponge do you use? Any tips welcome, thanks moms! :)

If you DON'T want it scratched and scuffed up... you have 2 choices:

- Spray cleaner (shines best with papertowels, instead of a sponge, and never use a scrubbie of ANY kind on it)

- Bon Ami (a non-abrasive powder...shines no matter WHAT you use, but has to be rinsed clean and dried with a towel)

Magic Eraser is great. I did Arm & Hammer for awhile. I tried Target's Up brand and they work just as great. I cut them in half because usually half is good for the whole sink :)

I use a Dobie scotch brite pad (it doesn't scratch) and I use my non-toxic spray cleaners or dish soap. I spray my germ killer in there once in awhile too. All my products are as earth friendly as you can get. I LOVE my sink, but don't use anything rough like comet as it will scratch.

Magic eraser pads! I clean with those first and then use a natural based window cleaner if I really want it to shine. I use the Method cleaners from Target....love the mint smell.

I finally found something that works!! I rinse the sink first. Then I sprinkle baking soda around the sink. I use a wet scrubbing brush or sponge and scrub the sink. I put the drain plug in and pour vinegar all around in the sink. As it bubbles, I scrub some more. Then I rinse with water.

I shake Arm & Hammer baking powder in it and get a wet paper towel (haha.... mine has to be a Viva paper towel) and I polish it up. Then I completely rinse the sink.... sides included and dry it with one dry paper towel. (There are SO MANY uses for baking soda. Go to armhammer.com for more of them.)

My sink appears to be clean before I actually start to clean it, but I was surprised the first time I wiped and looked at my paper towel. It was a brownish color. (I don't know if that's from pouring coffee down the sink sometimes or just because the sink was dirty.)

BTW- I use a spray (can) that I bought from Lowe's called Home Remedy Plus Stainless Steel Cleaner Protector for about $6 to clean all my stainless steel appliances. Sometimes I'll spray a bit on a rag specifically for stainless steel and rub it around on my sink, too. I'm very happy with this product.

I had to read all the responses to figure out what to use on my new stainless steel sink! I had a white porcelain kitchen sink before and I HATED it! It was impossible to keep clean and it got scratched and the scratches never came clean. So I am really happy to have a SS sink now! A tip from a friend of mine who is a suos chef: After chopping onions, wash your hands and then rub them on the stainless steel to get rid of the onion smell. It really works!

Vinegar works great to clean or polish it. I just wipe it off when I am done using the sink with a paper towel. I do scrub the sink once a week and put vinegar and baking soda in the garbage disposal, it keeps it from smelling stinky.

I just use really hot water and soap. It always works. Then again I clean mine almost daily. It's just easy to clean it quickly and keep up with it. IWhen I do my whole house deep clean, I'll fill it with hot water and bleach...and let it sit for a while.

I know vinegar works for alot of things, that is a good cheap way to try.

I used to clean homes during the construction phase and I had to use Bar Keepers Friend ( I could not use Comet), since it would not scratch the sink. I still clean model homes and since we have hard water out here, I still use it from time to time when there are bad water marks in the sinks. I use it with a regular cello sponge.

Hope that helps..

My mom always used Comet when I was growing up. So I have that on hand. I also use Arm&Hammer (which is just baking soda) or sometimes I'll throw some Softscrub with bleach in there.

I thought I didn't ever want a SS sink again after our first house... but then in our rental (while building) the sink was a white ceramic one. NEVER will I have one of those again. Every nasty thing that gets in the sink stares back at you... you cannot NOT SEE every gross thing. Ugh. Never. I LOVE my SS sink now...

I use a brush, the one I use to scrub stuff off my dishes before putting them in the dishwasher, hot water, and dish detergent. Every once-in-a-while I use powder cleanser, like Ajax or Comet. I rinse it with my sprayer wand thingy, and that's it. Or sometimes I use steel wool, especially when something stubborn is stuck on there.
Stainless sinks aren't supposed to be shiny like stainless appliances, but I would never describe mine as "smudgy." I love them because they don't get stained, chipped, etc. And they're cheaper!
