Do You and Your Spouse Celebrate Valentine's Day? What Are Your Plans?

Over the years, Valentine's Day has become more of a kids' holiday in my house than a romantic day. My husband has a mood disorder (among other issues) and February is one of the months where his mood tends to be most volatile, so I've learned to not expect anything in terms of how he'll feel on 2/14 and I have a card and gift card ready to give him even if he's being less than civilized. Sometimes I get surprised with flowers or a card, sometimes not. All good either way. I get the kids cards and some candy, and of course help then with whatever they are doing for class (snack bag exchanges, card exchanges, etc.).

My two teenagers both have significant others, so it's been fun to see them plan. My SD and her on-again-off-again boyfriend are, I think, together and she ordered a gift for him on-line and they are going out to dinner Saturday. My oldest son bought his girlfriend a Pandora ring that she hinted she liked (how overpriced is that Pandora stuff?!?!) and asked me to pick up the "double dozen" roses from Whole Foods, which is really the best flower deal out there. I'm going to show him how to cut and arrange them tonight so that he can give them to her in a vase. She's coming over tomorrow afternoon and they'll just hang out.

So...does anyone have any wildly romantic plans for the weekend? While most of my friends are in the "another holiday, whatever" phase of their relationships, I do have a few friends who still go out for a night on the town, or away for the weekend, or who know that they're getting jewelry, or are cooking a special dinner, etc.

Whatever you do or don't do to celebrate (or not), enjoy the day!

What can I do next?

Unfortunately, I'm single this year and will be having a single girls night out. Actually the last few years when I was with someone, it was someone who "doesn't do Valentine's Day" :( But I do buy for my kids, candy, card, etc. I would like to be with someone who will show me he loves me 365 days a year, and especially so on Valentine's Day!!!!

We used to go to dinner we stopped that about 10 years ago because it's become madness with the crowds it's not even enjoyable. We make time for each other without the kids on a regular basis though.

apologies to those who've read about my traditional V-day plans before.
when the boys were home i did a spurting heart meatloaf. if you get it just right, you bake a frozen tomato in the center of a heart-shaped meatloaf and stab it before you serve it. a delightful fountain (or sometimes just a creepy ooze) of red is a terrific start to any valentine's day meal!
but the boys aren't coming home this year, and my husband is unamused by the spurting heart, because he has no soul. so he's getting a meat hand instead. it's really more halloweeny, i guess. but what says 'love' like a hand of meat, complete with fingernails and a wristbone?
we'll get each other cards. i got roses yesterday. and we're going to spend the afternoon demo-ing the bathroom. because we know how to romance it up around here.

We don't do anything wildly romantic other that go to a favorite restaurant. Hubby always gets roses for me which is nice. We don't do gifts. He gave me a beautiful diamond ring last month for just because and I certainly do not expect material items.

Over the years, our daughter has joined us for Valentine dinner and this year she and her BF of about 1.5 yrs will be joining us for dinner at one of our favorite spots. They both LOVE this restaurant and it is far too pricey for a 20yr budget so they are very appreciative!!

They went with us to this favorite restaurant for NYE and we all had a wonderful dinner and look forward to one tomorrow night.

I sent daughter a couple of Valentines in the mail, one from me and one from her cat with some cash in each as a surprise. Today we are going to the spa for mani/pedis. I usually get her favorite Godiva chocolates but I ended up with nice cash cards for Valentines instead.

I am hoping I hold up for spa afternoon because I have been sick this week. I am on meds and hopefully I won't have some coughing attack while there. Hopefully it will be relaxing!

I have stories of what some friends have done that take a LOT of long term planning and was a lot of fun but we like to keep it fairly simple.

Happy Valentines Day!

We exchange cards and cook lobsters at home and open a bottle of Prosecco. We now have to make our 9 year old his own lobster. He eats too much to mooch off ours :(.

We've never made a big deal about it, but my husband usually gets me chocolates or flowers and I might make a nice dinner or some valentines themed dessert (I love to cook). Since this year we have a toddler and I'm pregnant, we're going to have wine and cheese (sparkling grape juice and cheeses I can have haha) after little man is in bed. Probably watch a movie or something.

We never feel the "pressure" of Valentine's Day, but it's fun to just be extra aware of our love for eachother. Whether we do something or nothing.

My husband is general manager of a restaurant, so in 16 years we have never celebrated Valentine's Day. I have never really cared, but he got a hard time about getting out of the holiday about 10 years ago, so he told me to pick any date, and it would be our "Love Day". We celebrate that on June 24th, and yes, we usually do something beachy and romantic. It is more of our summer private getaway than anything else. :)

My husband likes it that I let him off the hook for Valentines Day! I personally think it's a silly holiday. I tell my hubby that he should show me 365 days a year that he loves me, lol!! We bought something for our son and I picked up some chocolate covered strawberries for us to enjoy as a family. I am actually spending tomorrow night at the Florida Georgia Line concert with my sister, one of my other loves!

I am making dinner for my hubby. I don't like waiting for 2 hours at a restaurant.

My son asked me what he should get his girlfriend so I gave him some ideas. He then says "I'm going to get her Krispy Kreme and Chick filet." Those were NOT any of my suggestions!!! =)

Not sure what my daughter and her boyfriend are doing. Haven't heard yet.

We will go to a movie at some point this weekend, probably cook a great meal together over the weekend, have a few bottles of Proseco, mimosas, etc...

He always gives me chocolate, I give him a card and something like some snacks..

We already sent a Valentine care package up to our daughter.

Pretty low key.

My husband and I have really never celebrated it . Once in a blue moon I'll get flowers or chocolates. Now that we have our son, he enjoys it, and will give us homemade cards. He is the one that wants to give me stuff. It's really sweet.

Otherwise we just make dinner and watch a movie. Nothing crazy. I'll always have a dessert and some wine though. You don't need anything fancy.

No, we get a little something for the kids, but otherwise don't celebrate it. I'm getting an oil change in my car tomorrow and then doing the grocery shopping. Romantic, eh?

It's really just a manufactured holiday. I hated it when I was single, because I'd be surrounded by people receiving gifts at work that day. Now that I'm married, it just seems like a forced holiday. Appreciate each other throughout the year, not just when Hallmark says it's time.

We have a great time together all the time, but I can't stand Valentine's Day. I hate the pressure it seems to put on everyone, so we don't do anything at all. We don't even acknowledge the day. We'll watch a movie tonight because it's Friday and we like to watch movies on the weekend, and we'll celebrate the fact that I've finally finished grading Junior Themes. Woohoo!

I'm happy for those who celebrate, but I'm thrilled that we don't. We've been happily married for 20 years, so this works for us. :)

Hubby and I have been married for 27 years. 28 in June. This will be out 28th Valentines day. during that time we have been out to dinner "done" something ummm 0 times lol. we occasionally will exchange a card but we really don't go or do anything. I do make a good dinner at home. sometimes heart shaped pizza sometimes heart shaped meatloafs. thats what I am doing tomorrow. heart shaped mini meat loaves w/ mashed potato frosting and a salad. we might watch a movie but most likely he will fall asleep in his chair because he is working. it's just not that big a deal for us.

We've never made a big thing out of it. It is a nice excuse to get some chocolates for each other, but that's about it. If we have a night out its usually because we want to, not because of a specific holiday. Wildly romantic weekends are for our anniversary. Yeah, I think you're right, it's a young people holiday lol.

I like celebrating valentines....to me that means a card. And some sort of date ..dinner out or a movie night in...as long as it's about connecting as a couple....sounds great to say every day is valentine's but I know I get busy and don't show my love enough.

We've decided to do nothing. I was thinking about making a reservation but since it's Saturday it will be packed everywhere. So we'll do take out and just hang at home. Who knows, maybe we'll venture out for a burger?

I do plan to make some sort of dessert with my daughter tomorrow to celebrate. And maybe I'll get up and make pancakes.

Otherwise, it's a pretty normal day.

Today I bought myself tulips at the grocery store and my husband had actually picked me up some chocolates so I consider this a great Valentines :)

I give the kids some chocolates and my mother always sends the kids some money to get us a Valentines cake.

Other than that - hockey practice this morning at 7 am, a birthday party for another child this evening, and a hockey game after that. So much for romance!

Oh I also treated myself to a magazine (never buy) and I will have a shot of Baileys :)

Happy Valentines!!

Sometimes dinner but it's a Saturday and everything will be packed. I don't get hubby anything. I don't like hubby to buy me anything, not even a card. Sometimes he will get me a card, maybe flowers, maybe jewelry or maybe we just go to dinner. I don't really care to be honest.

Hope everyone enjoys their day, know matter what you do.

It's a Hallmark holiday, so we don't make a big deal out of it, but my boyfriend and I do plan to use it as a day to deliberately express our love for one another.
I'm decorating a bag for him to carry his sheet music in. I found some fabric in a print of Andy Warhol's Beatles lithograph, and I'm cutting his initials out of that, and putting some music note and guitar appliques on the bag.
He's taking me to dinner at a restaurant I've been wanting to try.
We're bringing his stepmom some flowers.
Other than that, we plan to spend the day in front of the tv watching concert dvd's of some of our favorite musicians.

Actually, we make our own Valentine's Day any day during the year when parking lots and restaurants are much more accessible. We just enjoy, as a couple, being home watching a nice movie and eating something we both like. The kids prepare for us a rich cake or "ice cream pizza".
I do not mind if I don't get flowers or chocolates, my husband doesn't expect anything from me on a day like this, but I do make special our anniversary, or his birthday, and he always plan something romantic for my b-day.
