Do I Sound Diabetic? Extreme Thirst...

Hello ladies. Well, I'll start off saying that I get a lot of canker sores and have since I was little. Well, lately at times, I get canker sores, especially on my tongue. My tongue feels and looks like it has been chewed on the sides. My mouth is really dry and I feel thirsty almost all the time. I do have a young baby who wakes up every night and nurses about 6 times a day. I could be dehydrated but I feel like i'm drinking water all day. Also, I feel really hungry and eat quite a bit. I'm really craving sweet things which started in pregnancy. I'm not gaining weight though, I'm almost thinner now then before I was pregnant. The other day, I was shopping with my mom and I started getting really hungry. I almost passed out. My mom gave me some nuts and juice and that seemed to help. I just get dizzy sometimes when I'm hungry. When I was pregnant, I had about three dizzy spells that almost caused me to faint. The Dr. tested my blood and said everything was fine. I just don't understand all these symptoms. I know I should go to the Dr. but I feel like he'll just tell me to get more rest and drink more water. Ugh, I know but with a 9 mo old and 4 yr old that is a little tough! Anyone having similar issues or know what might be wrong? Sound like diabetes at all? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I get dizzy, tunnel vision, fall and almost pass out sometimes as well when I haven't had much to eat, but I'm hypoglycemic. I tested 'borderline' with gestational diabetes during pregnancy and was also told by my Dr. that "everything was fine".

Perhaps you need a new Dr. who will test your blood sugar levels.

Classic symptoms include:

Type 1 Diabetes

* Frequent urination
* Unusual thirst
* Extreme hunger
* Unusual weight loss
* Extreme fatigue and Irritability

Type 2 Diabetes*

* Any of the type 1 symptoms
* Frequent infections
* Blurred vision
* Cuts/bruises that are slow to heal
* Tingling/numbness in the hands/feet
* Recurring skin, gum, or bladder infections

*Often people with type 2 diabetes have no symptoms

You do need to go to the doctor. You can be tested for Type 2 Diabetes, Diabetes Mellitus (type 1), and Diabetes Insipidus. Also ask your doctor about Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) which sounds what happened to you when you were shopping with your mom. After your mom gave you the nuts and juice, your blood sugar probably rose to a normal level and you felt better.

Measure your water intake. Often, people *think* they are drinking a lot of water during the day, but they are just drinking more than normal, but are still dehydrated.

The hunger and thirst could be related to nursing, but could also be a sign of hypoglycemia or Diabetes.

My husband and both of my kids have Type 1 Diabetes. My kids had EXTREME thirst (desparate for water) and went to the bathroom every 20 minutes or so. We had them tested immediately.

If I were you, I would call today for the soonest appointment available.

Good luck!

Has your blood pressure been checked? Low Blood pressure will do that also. Are you eating more to take in account your nursing that will also dehydrate you

Could be. When in doubt, call your doctor's office. What has your doctor said so far about your weight? Tell him everything you're noticing. Ask him if he'll test you for Type II. It's not a waste of time. If you find you're not diabetic, that'll be wonderful! Resting and hydrating are much better than poking yourself with needles.

When I was younger I had issues with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) - I was getting really good at fainting - and was told could this could somehow develop into Type II diabetes if I didn't start eating properly. I really think you ought to get this checked out right away, for your own peace of mind if nothing else.

Not sure about the tongue but you could call your primary care doc or your dentist instead of the OB. I get canker sores too and sometimes they are b/c of too much acid in your food or too much sugar. being so hungry all the time is probably b/c you are nursing. I was the same way. I would try getting your blood tested again, it is serious if you are diabetic and don't know it. I was gestational diabetic when pregnant so I have to be extra careful now not to get diabetes. maybe you can google some of the sypmtoms or go to webmd.com Good luck

Hi Leah...unexplained weight loss CAN be a sign of very high blood sugar - I would have your blood re-tested, just to make sure. Good luck.

My husband was recently diagnosed with diabetes, so I have been there! It honestly doesn't sound like diabetes, but I'd have your doctor run a simple test if you think it is.
Usually when adults are diagnosed (with Type II), they have the thirst, constant urination, weight loss, a change in vision (glasses or contacts don't work anymore)...all signs of HIGH blood suger (BS out of control). The dizziness and juice/nuts helping is typically a sign of LOW BS. Some people are more prone to dips in blood sugar, especially when they are hungry, but this is not the same as diabetes.

I'd talk to your doc if you are still concerned.
