Do I Need to Move up a Size?
I have a 13 month old baby boy who wakes up and he has leaked thru his diaper! I am wondering if I need to move him to the next size up in diapers? He weighs 23 pounds and is currently using size 4 diapers! We also use Pampers...any suggestions? Thank you :)
So What Happened?™
Thank you girls for your very helpful responses!!! We went to the store to try to buy Huggies Overnites, but we couldnt find them...so we decided to buy size 5 Pampers since we really like that brand. Joey was leaking from the top or the sides! Poor thing will wake up with the side of his PJ's all wet! This is our first night in a bigger size...hopefully that works! Thank you all again for your responses! I can always count on my mamasource girls :)

We use Huggies (b/c my kids are sensitve to Pampers) and we only use the Red box huggies.. some boxes or bags of them are red and white... the red box are a bit different in fit and do soo much better. The only time they did leak... I went one size up and didn't have any more problems.

My 28 lb guy uses 4s. Strange to need to go up at that weight. Never know. Is this just night time? If so try Huggies Overnights or Pampers Extra Protection for bed. I know both are readily available at Target in size 4 (likely many other stores too).

I currently put a size bigger on my daughter at night. I figured as long as she is not having issues during the day that I would wait to totally switch to a size bigger. Seeing that the smaller ones are cheaper (more in a box), I plan to use them as long as there are no issues! I have never tried the overnight diapers with either of my kids so I can not comment on those.

Yep. I never use the height & weight guide on the box. As soon as they're a little tight OR they leek through, I move up.

In my experience if they are leaking out you need to size up. Why pay more for overnight diapers when what you really need is just a bigger diaper? If he's leaking through at night it won't be long before he leaks through during the day as well especially if he's really active. I also never went by the weights on the package as my daughter always switched up before she hit the max weight. She was a heavy wetter though so she needed the extra absorbency.

Huggies Overnights work great - make sure changing him into these is the last thing you do before he goes in his crib.

It depends on whether he is leaking THROUGH the diapers or AROUND the diapers. If the leakage seems to be coming out of the leg holes or up the butt crack it may be from poor fit and going up a size could help. If the whole diaper is soaked to dripping you may need to switch to a different brand since the amount of absorbent material doesn't increase a great deal from one size to the next, they are just cut wider and longer to fit over a larger bottom.

Hi J.,
We had the same problem and switched to Huggies and have had a much better time with them. Also, get Huggies Overnights for extended time with sleeping.
Best of luck!

I have just moved up a size at night...so it holds more:)...then stay in the size they are in for daytime. That saves a little...since there are more in the size 4 pack vs. 5. Boys do tend to leak through more often. I have boys in pull-ups at night (who are potty trained) and they still leak through occasionally...it is a pain! I also have used Huggies overnights. Good luck!

I have found that boys just leak through diapers :) Everyone that I have talked to about the difference in boys and girls said they have also had the problem. However, I have noticed that if he was consistently leaking through the diapers, it made a big difference moving him up a size. I would try that - even if you notice it more at night you could just do the bigger size at night since that is when he has it on the longest. Good luck!

I don't think you need to move up a size. We switched my 14 mos. old son to Huggies Night Time diapers a few months ago & he no longer leaks out. They are very absorbent. We still use the regular size 4 Huggies brand during the day, but the Night Times are a God Send!!

Try Huggies Overnights. All my kids wore those at night b/c they leaked with regular Pampers or Huggies. They're great!

Sounds like it is time to up the size. But, if that doesn't help you can switch to the nighttime ones for the overnight. Or, (and this is what we ended up doing) put a pair of plastic pants on over the diaper. It keeps the sheets and pj's dry. Good luck.

Hi, J., If you don't want to go up a size just yet, you can take one diaper, lay it plastic side up, fold it in thirds the long way, turn it over, and use it as an insert to soak up the extra during the night. I did this with my kids, even before disposables, and it works great. You can even use smaller diapers, which are cheaper, for the padding. Good luck.

Good morning J.~
I have a 10 month old son and we ran into the same problem night after night since he started sleeping through the night at 6 months. I moved him into size 4 diapers when he was wearing size 2's. We also use the nighttime diapers (Pampers). I will be moving him up to size 5 nighttime ones soon. He currently wears size 3, always Pampers.
Good luck!

I'd suggest going up a size or getting those huggies overnight diapers. My son is in size 6 and he's almost 2 and they seem to help him, as they are much more absorbant. good luck

Hey J.!
Have you ever thought about switching to cloth? If it would be an option for you, try the wool soakers. You don't have to wash them too often (unless there's poop on them) 'cause they're natural wool and wool has a natural antibaterial oil to it. They stay warm in winter and cool in summer and they absorb tons without baby feeling the wet. They are a bit on the expensive side but well worth the money. A couple of my favorite diaper websites: Nicki's Diapers and Abby's Lane. Also Green Mountain Diapers site shows you pictures and helps with figuring out what size he'd need.

My son has the same problem...and he's the age and weight! Have you tried overnight diapers? I use the Huggies overnights in size 4 (normally he's in pampers size 4 too). If he's in these diapers he never leaks. Good luck!

I had the same problem with my son at about this age and so did some of my friends. They recommended using the Huggies Overnights and we had no problems after that. They worked perfect! I usually use Pampers, and I think that they now have an overnight diaper, but I was very happy with the Huggies in this situation! Hope this helps!

I have the same problem, my son is 14 months old. I have tried everything, size 5, pampers overnite, pampers extra absorbency. I also bought plastic pants at target and they work ok. the DR said to to only give milk at dinner and not right before bed but he seems thirsty. The plastic pants seem the way to go, plastic on the outside and cotton inside, put them over his diaper so his clots are wet in the morning... you might want to check that out!
