Dishwasher Reccomendations?
Our small, old builder-model dishwasher is on its last legs. The posts and baskets are rusting out. No wonder, I run it at least twice a day to accomodate all the kids "special" plates and cups. My DH says I can buy a new one this month (true joy here!).
I'll be reading up in Consumer Reports, but thought I'd poll the Mammas and see if anyone out there just LOVES their dishwasher? Qualities I am looking for are : 1. able to handle all those little plastic cups and plates, 2. Water and / or energy saving, 3. Quiet, 4. Reliable, 5. Doesn't require special soap or any extra maintenance
(hahah... reading over that list, it sounds like I am looking for a MAN, not a dishwasher, LOL!).
Thanks to all.

So What Happened?™
We installed a new Maytag Quiet Series 300 this past weekend. Although we really liked the Bosch dishwashers, we realized that ANY dishwasher we bought we be a huge upgrade from the builder's model that came with our house. So we got a middle of the road model and its doing great. Someday when we build our dream house, we'll get a Bosch or a KitchenAid. But for now, the Maytag is what we need.

I got the cheapest built in at Lowes - about $200. It doesn't rank high on the energy star card, but I haven't noticed any big jump in my electric bill going from no dishwasher to this one. It's reasonably quiet and takes everything my family dishes out (pun intended) with no problems.
I do three loads of dishes a day, including sippy cups and sippy bowls. My toddler has danced on the door, which still shuts, and there have been a couple of legos that got melted on the heating elements - it still works like it did 3 years ago.

Kitchen Aide top on the line model is so quiet that you can
stand next to it and barely hear it. It is also roomy inside and if you like you can pay extra to have the the control buttons "hidden" on the top of the door. We had it in our "old" house and plan to get one just like it installed in our new home.

Try GE. When we bought our house it had a 15 year old GE washer and it cleaned so good. Later I bought another one and did not clean as good.

I am a Consumer Reports gal as well, and I just got my 2008 buying guide. It rated the Kenmore 1374, I think you get it at Sears, as the top pick. It runs around $650. Kenmore had 4 out of the top 5 spots. The models were 1374, 1378, 1373, & 1376. We had a Kenmore in our other house I loved it. I hardly ever had to pre-wash. Good luck.

To me, Whirlpool is one of the best brands of dishwasher. I used to sell dishwahsers at Sears and this brand seemed to be the one most people like the best, and that is what I have and I love it. Another thing, the Quiet feature comes in different levels, 1 being the least and goes up from there. Mine is a Quiet Partner 1 and I can barely tell it's going unless I am right there beside it. So, even the Whirlpool Quiet Partner 1 is really quiet. One more tip--I would stay away from a stainless interior, bc it accumulates lots more hard water stains than a plastic interior--since low maintainance is one of your qualities. Just ask the salesperson questions before you buy one!! Good Luck!!

We bought a Bosch at Lowes and love it!! I will never have another brand of dishwasher. Too many good things to list but my favorites are stainless steel interior and so quiet we don't even know when it is running. Definatley meets all your listed requirements.

I replaced the builder dishwasher about 10 years back with a GE Profile. It has extra insulation around it so that you don't know it is running, you use regular dishwasher powder or liquid in it and it has a place for jet dry. I like the extra heat (sanitation cycle) as it does cut down on germs. Hubby installed it within an hour and it has been with us ever since.
