I have had my digital camera for about 3 years now this past Christmas. I love the camera, but it sucks batteries like there is no tomorrow. I can get 1 picture out of 2 new lithem energizer batteries. What is wrong with my camera? When it was still new these batteries would last months before going dead. Do I just need to purchase a new camera?

Thank you for any help you may offer because I am clueless when it comes to these things.

What can I do next?

A couple of things I leaned in taking my photography class to learn how to use mine was: Turning your digital screen off as you take the pics. Just use the view finder like the "old" cameras and it won't drain your battery. Also, you can go into your menu and reformat your camera - it deletes all of the pics you have stored so download your pics before hand. Its called "re-fragmenting" or "reformatting" on most cameras and will clear up space on your cameras hard drive (even though you delete your pics it still leaves something in your camera that takes up space). You can also change the setting on the quality of your pictures that you take. You do not need to have it on the best quality setting (unless you're a professional or are going to blow up the pictures to portrait size) and that will drain your battery life as well. Like another poster also said by new rechargeable batteries as they do wear out after a while! Hope this helps - if not then call your camera manufacturer - they're really great over the phone and will help you fix it for free!

Buy a new camera - - -one that has a charger where you can recharge the cameras battery; not 'rechargable batteries'. It's a charger to charge just your cameras battery and you are good to go for a long time.

I'd recommend finding a camera store near your local area and asking them what's wrong.

Chances are, they'll recommend that with the speed of technology, it will be cheaper to replace the camera than to repair it, but they'll be able to help analyze what's happening and perhaps make a recommendation on a new one.

I don't know if Ritz Camera is still around, we have a local place here called Roberts which his amazing. They usually have competitive prices and MUCH more knowledgeable staff than at electronic departments of other stores. They give free advice/opinions, no obligation to buy anything, and you can choose either to purchase from them or to use a site like tigerdirect.com to see if you can match the price or improve upon it.

If you have the viewing screen on while taking pictures that can suck the battery life.

Sounds like something is wrong with your camera. I use Energizer Lithium and they last me for at least 6 months. You should get way more than one picture with regular alkline, much less lithium. I'd call somewhere and see what they would charge to look at it. I'm not sure how much you'd spend on a new one but we got a decent Canon for around $165. I don't use a lot of bells and whistles, just pictures and short video clips so this is perfect for us. Point being, I wouldn't suggest spending over $50 to fix it. No telling how long it will last. You'd probably be better off dumping that kind of cash into a new one.

If you don't want to spend the money on a new camera right away I would try replacing the batteries first. Rechargeable batteries get old too and sometimes they lose the ability to keep a charge. Eventually you'll need a new camera too because unfortunately things just don't last like they used to. But I would bet that with fresh batteries it will be good as new. You can find the batteries online, through the manufacturer, or probably at any electronics store such as Best Buy.
Good Luck

I had a problem with my camera a year ago, and when I brought it to Ritz Camera they told me that it would take Canon 6-8 weeks to fix it and that it would cost $250. They then showed me what they said was a comparable one on the shelf that only cost $140. (I know that technology improves rapidly, but my camera originally cost $450 2 years earlier. I seriously doubted that a comparable one would cost that much less in only 2 years.) I took my camera home, went on the Canon website, quickly filled out a repair form, paid the $89 they charged to fix it, and within ONE week it was returned as good as new. Definitely left a bad taste in my mouth for Ritz. I highly recommend going directly to the manufacturer's website. Good luck!
