Different Kind of Back Pain in Pregnancy

Hi Moms,
I have a quick question regarding some back pain. I am currently having back pain located in my upper right of my back, a little lower than the shoulder blade. I had this pain during my first pregnancy and it was chalked up to me having gall bladder issues (as it can sometimes cause back pain). Well I am in pregnancy number two, 31 weeks along, and just started experiencing this same pain again. But only now I don't have my gall bladder anymore as it was removed. Any thoughts/ideas on what it could be? I put a call into my doctor and I am waiting to hear back from them. But I thought while I was waiting, I would hear your opinions and maybe some ways to get relief. Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

Hi there,
My cousin had a similar pain below her right shoulder blade towards middle. It could be quite jarring and uncomfortable to sleep and lift her first child. She went to a chiropractor and it ended up being sciatica. The weight of the baby's position was pressing on a nerve, causing the pain in her upper back aiand occasional tingly - numbness in her right arm. Hope this helps. Happy landing with number two!

it could also be your kidney. Women are more prone to infections during their pregnancy. If you have a kidney infection that could cause the pain in your back. The next time your at your OB have them check your urine for infection.

Have you tried going to the chiropractor?
I could not have survived either of my pregnancies without getting adjusted weekly. I have a small frame and the weight of my babies, my larger boobies and my posture really gave me problems.
It's worth a try.
My shoulder goes out every now and then when I'm under a lot of stress and now the chiros have chairs that move and adjust you. Mine also has a think about the size of a writing pen that he can just put over a nerve to pop things back. They really don't have to wrench on you too much these days.
I would talk to your doctor about it and make an appointment with a chiro.

That's just my opinion, though.

Best wishes!

Oh my gosh! The exact same thing happened to me in 3 of my pregnancies-all my boys. It didn't happen to me with my daughter....my theory is that she was so tiny-only 6 pounds while my boys were 8lb. 9 oz. and 9lb. 6oz. And I have had this pain with this pregnancy, too and my midwife estimated that he was already 7 lbs. at 34 weeks. I tried massages, and while they were wonderful, it did nothing long term to relieve the pain. So I finally relented and went to see a chiropractor who did an adjustment on my whole body, and I have had considerably less pain since then, although it still flares up. I just have to sleep on a heating pad kept on low, and I cannot lay on either side. Back only, which I know is a no-no in pregnancy, but it's the only position that I can comfortably sleep in. I am going in for a massage today, though, because I want to keep my muscles loose. Interesting that you mention gallbladder issues, since I was supposed to have mine taken out, but I was too afraid. How big was your first baby? If you can go in and get adjusted by a chiropractor who is aware of your pregnancy, you will probably get some good relief. I know this is totally miserable, so try to hang in there...Your pregnancy is getting to the home stretch. I'm almost 37 weeks now, and I can't wait to have this little man.

Get a professional massage or seek out a CranioSacral Therapist. They will get to the root cause.

Sounds like a pinched nerve. There are many chiropractors willing & able to work with pregnant women...I would try that first. It's an easy fix, if it truly is a pinched nerve, or your spine being out of alignment. Babies do all sorts of funny things to your body, and having a pinched nerve is by no means unusual. Although I didn't have it with my son, I do often get a pinched nerve just where you describe, and the chiropractor has been a wonderful way to ease it. GL!

Taking out a gall bladder does not mean it won't hurt in the future- all the nerves that went to it are still there. And if it was a problem because of bad eating habits those things will still trigger a pain. The easiest least invasive ways to help that I have seen is apple cider- the specific apple pectin has been found to calm this down.
Meanwhile someone who has had their gb out needs to be aware that there are significant problems to not having a gb-the purpose of a gb is to collect bile from the liver, and concentrate the bile so that when you eat fat the strong bile can break it down so you can absorb your oil soluble vitamins- A,E,D&K. Without a gall bladder this doesn't happen. This does not happen.
Two years post op it has often been observed that oil soluble vit deficienies occur.
A person who has had their gb out needs to be on a bile supplement each time they eat. This is basic physiology, but often over looked for some unknown reason- it is in any basic physiology book.
So the additional stress of your pregnancy may have stirred this up .
The best would be to find a natural health care person- I'd recommend contacting Standard Process Whole Food Supplement company and getting a referral. The above is just general info, and you really should have someone that is looking at your individual situation.
Best, k

Hi A.,

A lot of pain in the gallbladder area is referred pain from a toxic liver. My sister had three doctors tell her to take her gallbladder out and an ND did some blood work and found the liver to be toxic. She was diagnosed with NACL (non-alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver), a very common disease these days because of the chemicals in our food supply. She is fine now.

That being said, you may need a detox but usually that is not a good idea during pregnancy. As you remove toxins sometimes they get into the blood stream and circulate through the baby. My first suggestion would be get to a chiropractor right away. They can hold things at bay and may even get to the root of the problem the first time. If there is an issue with your liver there are safe ways of keeping it from getting worse.

Medical doctors don't understand these nuances as they are very symptom related and too specialized. Looking at the body as a whole, both bodies in your case :) is where an ND, a midwife or a chiropractor can help the most.

Hope I helped!

M.
