Difference Between Similac Formula and Abbott Formula???

we are currently planning a family vacation oversea to see my parents who live in Taiwan (Asia) the end of September. I asked my sister to do some research about my youngest son's (3 months now, will be 6 months when we travel) formula which he is currently using Similac Sensitive Isomil Soy. By doing that, I don't have to worry about pack the whole two and half weeks of formula with us. I am able to just get those when we get there, would be a lot easier. After a week, she told me that she has been told that they don't have the brand Similac in Taiwan, but they do have Abbott, and they are one and the same. My questions is, does anybody know if that's true or maybe they are two total different brand of formulas and they are just under that same big company??? Please help.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Thank you all for your suggestions. After thinking through the milk powder situation in Asia, I decide to just pack my own formula instead of getting over there... I will sleep much better and knowing my son won't have any problem with his formula, especially he is very picky about it. So once again, thank you for all your help and suggestions. ^_^

I would pack my own formula. Not sure if you read it on the news, but it was reported on the news today that over 53k tots were sick on Chinese formula. Now I'm not sure if it's Abbott formula or if I'm just being toooo cautious, but you can never be too sure. I'm Chinese, so I also do know Hong Kong, China and Taiwan are completely different places, but they are close enough in proximity. There has been so much news lately on Chinese formula that I wouldn't take the chance and I would just suck it up and bring my own....

I would pack my own as well. Given that your son is so young there is no way I'd take a chance that it is the same. Even if it's the same company producing it, you have no way of knowing what the quality control standards are for the product.

Why don't you call the company and ask? Similac is made by Abbott laboratories, and many multinational companies change the name of their product from one country to another (depending on how well it is received by the language spoken there etc).
If you check your formula can, you will see the name Abbott.
Here is the web site, and the name Abbott on the right top of the page

You could always ship the Similac to Taiwan prior to your trip. That way you don't have so much to pack in your luggage and it might even be cheaper that way.

Well, I hadn't heard about the things Cheryl mentioned (i'm so out of the loop sometimes!!) but even before hearing that I would say pack your own. We had to change my son's formula frequently his first few months because he couldn't seem to digest anything we were giving him and each time it caused him to have a bit of an upset tummy. Now, it was nothing major by any means, but he would get constipated and feel a little different I think, and when you're on vacation you really don't want to have to deal with that! I suppose if they actually are the same, my argument is completely null and void, but I would sense that they are probably very similar but not exactly the same, I wouldn't take the chance.

Another tip...we've traveled a lot lately too and I have just been dumping my son's formula into gallon size ziplock bags (double bagged!!) and packing them that way. Those cans are so bulky and so hard to deal with, especially when you have limited space! Formula cans can be opened for a month without spoiling so if you only have to pack enough for 2.5 weeks, your window should be plenty big enough to have those other packages opened and not in use. I have wondered a couple times if they would search my bags and wonder what these bags of powder were, so I did label them in big letters, and so far I haven't been stopped (they were in my checked luggage, but still!).

Anyway, it's hard to know what/how much to pack, especially for such a big trip, but I would try to stay consistent with the things that really matter and to me, Formula is one of them!
