I've been all over the internet searching. Overwhelming! The bottom line I've found is excercise, lose weight, and diet.
Most important - cut sodium and trans fats. Majority of food should come from oily fish, whole grains, legumes, veggies, and fruits, with a smaller proportion of lean chicken. Low fat dairy, no sweets. 1 glass of red wine a day. It hit me, that's the Mediteranean Diet - South Beach Diet! After researching those, I like the fresh healthy approach they offer. I like that Greatsuccess with these diets? Any tips, ideas, pitfalls to watch for? Recipes, snack ideas?

So What Happened?

I agree about the DASH. It falls right in with these things I'm saying. FIsh, whole grain, legumes, veggies. I'm good with all of that. I don't have a problem with processed foods. I cut those out already. I started eating low-carb last month, so I don't have anything sugary or processed already. Now, I just need to add in whole grains and cut the fat in my cheese.

The DASH diet was designed specifically for high blood pressure. I've found that the most challenging aspect of cutting back on sodium is processed food. My doctor asked me if I had a lot of sodium in my diet. I thought, well, I almost never add salt to food but I do love chips and pretzels. Still, I thought I was probably not doing too bad. Wrong! I read labels now! I still really need to work on it. There are too many days when I just don't care ... bad day, comfort food, you get the idea. I'm try to be better.

Good luck!!!

Yep, South Beach Diet is definitely the way to go! Good luck!

My tip: Get a South Beach Diet cookbook--very helpful to have recipes on hand.

I've never been one for diets. I just can't follow them because I tend to be kind of a picky eater. I wasn't a fan of the recipes or example food plans in the South Beach book. I'm more of a "make better choices with the knowledge I have" kind of gal. I read, research, read, research, and then make good choices. I tend to lean towards a whole, unprocessed foods diet high in protein. When you're not restricted by any particular plan, it opens up a whole fun world of food. I love going to Whole Foods and browsing all the healthy choices I've never tried before. Maybe pick one each time I go to try new. I love going to farmers market, picking up fresh produce and smelling it, looking at all the bright colors, and brainstorming new dishes. It's so much fun to me. Restrictive diets don't really allow that.

On top of that, I count my calories using myfitnesspal.com. This keeps me accountable, because I'll face it, I'm not the most disciplined person in the world!

Good luck in whatever plan you decide on, T.! We can all use to be healthier!

I've been carrying a ziploc with nuts and craisins in my purse. Taste good and usually gets me by until I can get home and make a healthy meal for myself. I see it says low fat dairy and fruits, fresh smoothies are always yummy too! Good luck to you!
