Did You Take Fenugreek to Increase Milk Supply??

just recently it seems like my milk supply is diminishing.. I used to pump enough to make cereal for the baby every day... and I pumped enough for a bottle once aweek for the sitter. But this past week I have not been able to pump hardly anything.

I bought a bottle of fenugreek and started taking it today. I am using my breast pump several times a day. I try to pump both sides at once - but I cant do that if the kida are up.. or surely one of them will want to be on my lap and I wont have a hand to do anything..

I was wondering if fenugreek worked for you and if anyone has any other tips.

Fenugreek worked great for me. I breastfed my son for 25 months and used it throughout the whole time on and off when ever my supply needed a "boost"! I used to take 3-4 with breakfast, 3 with lunch, and 3-4 with dinner.

Have you tried pumping in the bathtub? Sounds wierd, but the warm water and you being more relaxed will help your flow.

Also, place a warm wash cloth on the top of your breast while pumping.

Eat Oatmeal for breakfast.

You have to make sure you are getting MORE than enough water. Stop coffee, caffine, make sure to stop smoking if you smoke, eat 5-7 small meals throughout the day instead of 2-3 big ones.

Make sure you're massaging the breast while pumping.

Have you checked out Kellymom.com or your local LLL?

Also - do you have a high quality pump? A good quality hospital grade pump is best. Evenflo brands are horrible! Gerber isn't too good either. Make sure you have a dual electric! Medela would be my first choice.

Drink Healthy nursing tea to increase your milk production. I was low on supply and this tea helped me a lot.

I used it too when needed. It worked quite well. Sometimes your supply seems to take a dip at times. This happened to me at times. If you have concerns too, you can call the experts of LLL. They are very knowledgable and I've found the groups helpful.

I took Feungreek for a month to try and increase my supply, but it didn't help. And it was a lot of pills to take several times a day. My husband hates maple syrup and thats what you smell like when you take it. I felt like a giant pancake. Have you tried pumping every 10 minutes for an hour rotating sides?

I drank mothers milk tea as well. And would suggest trying to pump, or nurse more often to regain your supply.

First of all.... there are a couple of things i figured out about my milk supply towards the end of nursing and pumping at work that I wish i had know earlier on. When pumping, I found that if I stimulated the let down reflex my self it was much more sufficient of a let down then if the machine did it. Once I pumped the milk from that let down, i would do it again and would pump the milk from the second let down. I got 3-4 more ounces that way, believe it or not. I thought my supply was almost gone, but it was that the let down I was getting from my pump was just not as good as it could be. Your stimulation is a lot closer to your babies then a machine. You know what it feels like when the baby is nursing and can simulate that better. Once I figured that out I was able to continue nursing for a couple more months because it helped increase my milk supply again. In regard to your other question about fenugreek, i never took fenugreek per say, but I did take something called mothers milk tea and i think one of the main ingredients if fenugreek. I found it at whole foods in the tea section. It was suggested by son's pediatrician..... Also another golden rule that i always forgot about, drink lot's and lot's of water until you feel like you are drowning :) that alone will increase your supply. Hope this helps some.

I found my supply changed with my stress levels... obviously as I went back to the office and took on a new job and new responsibilities... everything hit me at once and I had no choice but to do all I could to raise the supply, but never totally succeeded...

I know I have a few essentials, but I have never had the opportunity to try... I am sure as long as you are relaxed enough (as all mom's are usually very busy and high stressed), it could come back up...

good luck!

I used it at about 5 or 6 months with my oldest. I found out later that this is a natural time for your supply to wane a little, but I was really hyper-scheduling her feedings. With subsequent kids (I have 4), I just let them nurse more often and usually it would come back up. Oh, I almost forgot -- I found out I was pg shortly after that, that could have been some of the problem. Anyway, to the OP, fenugreek did help some, but not that much for me, since I had some extenuating circumstances, lol.

I currently am drinking a tea called Mother's Milk to increase milk supply. It has fenugreek in it. It works great for me. I get the tea at Whole Foods Market. It costs about $5.
