I was wondering if there were any mommies out there who had late teethers? My son will soon be 9 months old and is still toothless :-) When did your children's teeth finally come in?

What can I do next?

My baby girl will be 10 months at the end of the month and within the last 3 weeks she has gotten 4 teeth!!! The bottom two came in first and then one of the top ones. Now the other top one has came in. Poor thing has been chewing on everything and leaves a trail of drewl everywhere! I was also wondering the same as you but my Dr. said they all develop at different levels and not to worry. Just be prepared with teething rings and we used the mesh feeding bags with popcicles for something different. She didn't like the Oragel so we had to suffer a bit with whinning but she's better now. Good Luck!!

My baby boy is almost 13 months old, and he got his first tooth just 3 days ago! Being in the dental profession this worried me too, when he at 9 or 10 months did not have any teeth.. Don't worry about it, they can still chew. The first teeth to erupt are usually the incisors, which are not chewing teeth anyway. Enjoy that gummy smile and don't worry. My family doctor and dentist said not to worry unless baby wasn't showing "signs" of erupting teeth by 15 months, bumps in the gums etc. Hope this helps!

S.-- I also had a baby boy in April 2007, and his bottom teeth JUST cut through about a week ago! My older son (who's about 2 1/2) was a late teether, too. I have no idea why, but my older son now has a mouthful of cute little baby teeth, so I don't think you have anything to worry about. Hope this helps! :)

Hi there! We have a lot in common and don't worry!! My daughter was born in March of 07 and just got her 1st tooth Jan. 6 (3 days before her 10 month b-day) and then got her 2nd one (front bottom) about a week to 10 days later. My mother-in-law is in the dentist field and says the later, the healthier they will be, actually. The longer they are down in the gums, the better, so it's not a bad thing. You will know when they're about to break through the gums because he will be very cranky and won't sleep that night...but after the first one comes through, she dealt with the 2nd better. Just give Tylenol and/or teething tablets (homeopathic) which was a great thing for me because it helps calm them and get some rest through it all. Also, my daughter used the cool teething rings, but found the best comfort in the mesh "feeder" thingy that you can put grapes/carrots, etc. in for them to gum...I just put one piece of ice in it and she'd teeth on that until it was gone. She loved it! Best wishes...they'll be here soon and just remember, it's actually better to be late.

My daughter got her 2 bottom teeth at 6 months and didn't get any more in until after she was 1 yr. 2-3 months after her first birthday she started getting a new one every week it seemed. She got her first two bottom teeth at 4 months but then she didn't get anymore until around 10 months old- then two more on the bottom and two side teeth but still not the two middle teeth. My sister-in-law works in a dentist office and according to her, it is better is they come in late.

There was a time when we thought our (now) 11-yr old grandson would NEVER get teeth. We also had another grandson the same age at the same time....he had 8 teeth by a year...but his slightly younger cousin didn't get his first tooth til he was 14 months old. I'm happy to tell you both of them have the same amount of teeth now, and are happy, healthy and very very fit 11-yr old boys. As a mom of 7 and a grandmother of 17, don't sweat the small stuff. Those teeth will come in soon enough!

Both of my sons (now 3.5 and 7) teethed late. My older son didn't get a tooth until he was 11 months old and my younger son got his first tooth at 14 months! Their (pediatric) dentist said that this is not unheard of, and it's actually better for their teeth since then then don't have milk pooling in their mouths etc. as they would if they got their teeth earlier.

Bottom line: if you're pediatrician isn't worried, I wouldn't be either. :)

My next two were around 10 months and my last got his first tooth at 7 months. Don't worry!! I did not find the advice that another mom gave you to be true though. My oldest daughter was walking at 7 months and did everything else fast too. It is unrelated to when teeth come in.

I have a friend whose one daughter was born with her bottom teeth already and the other daughter did not cut teeth until she was 13 months. It really just depends on several factors including heredity. If she reaches a year and still hasn't cut, go see a pediatric dentist who can then Xray to determine if there is an underlying problem.

My first 2 kids didn't get their first tooth until around one year old. My daughter is now 8 and she has only lost 3 of her baby teeth (2 were pulled because the permanents were growing in behind them and there was no indication that they were going to fall out on their own!) My mom swears that the later the baby teeth come in that the stronger the permanent teeth will be, but I don't know if that's a myth.

Good Morning S.,

How are you doing? The little girl that I care for got her first tooth when she was about 14 or 15 months old. She is now 21 months old and has about 7 teeth. But do not worry, if your son is anything like this little girl, he will do just fine without teeth. She was able to eat veggies, hot dog without skins and fruits just by gumming them - she had very strong gums.

Take Care,

my son too S.. He was born March 07 and just started cutting teeth about 1 month ago. Now he has 6! They came in fast and furious. He gets a fever everytime. Sometimes he ends up sick after. My doctor said that cutting teeth weakens immune system and they are putting everything in their mouth hence, sick. Anyhow, most of the time it passes in a couple weeks and lots of sleepless nights. I always know he is teething by the night waking. I nurse him that seems to be his only comfort. Don't worry my other boys were opposites, one came early and one came late. They both have great teeth at 11 year and 14 years. I guess they are all different thank god!

At 15months my daughter still had no teeth but appeared to have very tough gums. We took her to a child dentist who X-rayed her mouth. The teeth were indeed there, just not yet erupted. He told us that if they had not erupted by 17-18 months he would do a procedure in which he would open up the gums. Thank goodness just before 18months she cut her first tooth. Also, I have been told by many that the later the teeth come in, the better the teeth. This was indeed the case for her. She has beautiful strong, white teeth. Be patient!
