Hi Moms,
My boys 7 years and 2 years old both have it. My 2 yr old has had it for about 8 days and its finally improving, but my oldest just got sick with it on yesterday. They will not eat well and is sick drinking gatorade (because niether of them likes the the pedilyte). My doctor put them on the BRAT diet with yogurt. Well needless to say this is not helping very much. The baby will not eat any of these things and is hungry all the time but is soooooo picky about what he wants and the things that he does want only upsets his stomach. However my oldest is so afraid of eating because everytime he does he gets "sick" and feel horrible. I dont know what I could do to help them. Please help!

Thanks so much....

What can I do next?

I really don't know why, but this is what my grand ma told my mom and my mom told me and have work wonders with my kids (2 and 12)
I give them Portuguese rolls, in my country call bolillos.
Here is a lnk so you can see the bread but don't put any of the fills, most kids babies, love the bread. If you can't find them I guess a French baggett would do the same effect.

PS: actually never search tortas n wiki, but some of these fillings look so yummy, maybe when they are better you could use them too.

Awww! :( So sorry to hear that! I would try saltine crackers, rice is good for that too. When my twins had diarrhea, their doctor too recommended Gatorade, I bought different flavors. Wheat bread (no oats or oatmeal), chicken soup is very good too! Thats what my mom would give us. You can make your own (they can eat the chicken), or buy campbell's.
Hope they get better soon!

If it's viral, there's really nothing you can do but let it run its course. The greatest concern, of course, and why you're doing electrolyte-based drinks, is dehydration.

Since they're not eating well, you may want to mention that to the pediatrician as it only take a brief virus to get dehydrated.

I wish there was a magic answer, but for stomach viruses, they just have to run their courses. The BRAT diet is recommended because it's the foods known to cause the least irritation to the stomach, especially in times like these. However, you really can give them anything because eating is better than not. Try things like pudding, pasta with butter, cheerios - things that can provide a liquid content and high calories.

Sorry you're all going through this. It's not fun. Once the virus passes, the hormone responsible for diarrhea (Anti Diarrhetic Hormone) will get back in balance.

My kiddos had this a couple months ago. It lasts about 10 days and the only thing they wanted to eat were those little "cutie" oranges. They seemed to not make their stomach any worse and it helped keep them hydrated. I also gave them some popsicles and I mixed Sprite with the Pedialyte and they drank it better (the dr. suggested it). I hope they feel better soon!!

get a probiotic in them if you can. That's probably why the doc recommended yogurt. If they don't like yogurt you may be able to find another way. I am a Shaklee Independent Distributor. Do you know anyone who takes Shaklee? They may have some probiotics in the house and these could really help.

Keep them hydrated on gatorade and they will eat when they are hungry enough. I know you are all miserable but it will get better.

The tummy bug that is going around this year is particularly nasty. As long as they are drinking and staying hydrated don't worry so much about food right now. The system def needs time to calm and heal.

My now 2 year old had it a while back and she did the same thing-asking for foods that I knew would make her sick. It wasn't fun to keep explaining that we were all out of x and she didn't like that answer but she didn't starve and once she was over it completely (funny how moms just know) I started with things like karen suggested-plain noodles, skinny mashed potatoes (without lots of butter or milk) and mine would go for some banana and yogurt.

You also don't want to give anything to stop the diarrhea, per se, as this is the body's way of ridding the bug from the system. But you also don't want to do anything that will keep the system upset (like introducing real foods too soon) so you are on track. Just give them time. This one seems to hang on longer than most tummy bugs.

This sounds like it could be viral or bacterial in nature rather than an allergic reaction. Huzzah for Karen's recommendation of chamomile and mint tea. They can help soothe irritated tissues and improve enzymes needed for proper digestion. Plus they taste great anytime!

Home remedies for which you might have the ingredients at hand or readily available at a nearby store:

Chop a handful of red radishes, mix with 1 cup of cold milk and 1/2 teaspoon of cornstarch. Drink the mixture slowly. This natural remedy for diarrhea should stop the diarrhea within an hour. Repeat again in 4 hours, if required.

Mix the juice from raw ginger with raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar and sweeten with raw honey. Add water and have your children drink this frequently, sipping rather than gulping.

Grate some fresh carrots and add them to a soup with brown rice. The rice will help firm up the stools and the carrots and rice offer minerals which are depleted through watery stools.

Fresh blackberries and bananas help cure diarrhea. Eat in moderation to avoid constipation.

Hopefully you'll have the ingredients on hand for one or more of these remedies, and maybe tomorrow you can get more ingredients so you can offer them a variety of different curative foods. Let food be their medicine, and they will regain health quickly.

My mom always gave us flat coke and saltine crackers when we had upset stomachs. It is what she had done and still does for herself. When my kids have had diarrhea, I have given them pedialyte mixed with flat sprite (I just put some in a glass and let it sit for about half an hour. Also, our pediatrician recommended we give them BioGaia chewables tablets. We got ours from CVS, so you might ask your pedi about those. They rebuild the good bacteria in the stomach, and I always give them to my kids when they start having diarrhea. My kids are also 2 and 7. The first sign of upset stomach from the older one, and I will give her a BioGaia and a pepto bismol tablet (but never anything to actually stop the Diarrhea. That can make the problem last much longer.) I know you are supposed to steer clear of dairy for the first couple of days, but like your pedi said, yogurt is great. Will they drink the liquid yogurt? When my younger one was sick last year, she was no longer eating baby food, but I went and bought a variety of the applesauce, puddings and things, just to get them both to eat. She would only eat them if I fed them to her, but whatever works. Any type of generic carbohydrate should be good, especially if they are on the tail end of it. Plain noodles, crackers, toast, etc. Another thing we give our kids is Chamomile tea. We make it weak and add a little sugar. We have done this (with pediatrician's approval) since they were both tiny. Chamomile and mint teas soothe the stomach. Good luck!

My kids hate gatorade too. Try Smart Water instead, it has the electrolytes that Gatorade has without the color or sugars. You can use it as water or add a mix that they like. Keeping them hydrated is the most important. I make popsicles for them when they are sick. Try the BRAT w/o the yogurt for a day or two to see if that makes the difference. Add the yogurt slowly, a bite or two at a meal or every other meal.
