Im currently 35 wks pregnant and have been having diarrhea for the past 2 or 3 days. Im on Procardia to stop me from dilating because i went into preterm labor... and ive heard that when your body is ready to deliver you usually have diarrhea a day,or so,before...so im wondering if my body is ready but because of my procardia its not allowing me to go into labor??? Im going to call my doctor on this but would like to hear other peoples opinion also..

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your responses.... i go to the doctor on monday so hopefully she will tell me some good news... Shes suppose to take me off the procardia this coming week (36wks) cause ive already had the steroids for her lungs... i really havent had any other symptoms of a stomach bug or anything, thats why im thinking it could be my body getting ready for labor... and my braxton hicks are getting stronger and more often through out the day..but i will post another update after i go to the doctor... thanks again ladies

Everyones body is different. I would call the doctor, do not delay. Are you having any other symptoms of illness? Let the doctor know about that as well.

Bless your heart. Everyone gets nervous and everyone has questions and because no labor with any baby is ever the same, you should never feel like it's too much to ask if you aren't sure.

I am 36 weeks along with my second baby and I am nervous too! It's just the way it is.

I think it sounds like your body is ready but you are far along enough that everything is going to be fine. The best thing is to tell the doctor everything and get the answers you need and then REST as much as possible. You will want and need all your strength so you can feel your best as you go through this process of birthing your sweet baby! My prayers are with you and best regards, L.

When you lose your mucus plug, then your body is ready for labor. I've never heard or experienced the diarrhea thing.

You probably just picked up a stomach bug or are having a reaction to something you ate.

A full term pregnancy is 40 weeks, and the longer a baby stays in the womb, the better it is for the baby. My OB wouldn't deliver before 36 weeks unless is was medically necessary.

With your issues with preterm labor, you probably won't make it to 40 weeks, but hopefully you can hold out another couple of weeks so that your baby will truly be full term.

Call your doc about the bathroom issues, and make sure you are drinking plenty of fluids - especially those with electrolytes. Gatorade, water, tea (not sweet tea), etc are good choices. Avoid apple juice because it can actually stimulate bowel movements.

Hi C.,

It's not TMI! That's what we ladies are here for!

How long have you been on the Procardia? Make sure you read the product insert and know exactly what you're taking. Procardia is primarily used for High Blood Pressure but some OBs use it because it does slow down the dilation process. Find out when it will be safe for you and the baby to come off of it.

If this isn't a stomach flu or food issues... the Procardia can cause constipation and diarrhea. There are usually more occasions of constipation at the end of a pregnancy than the opposite, but constipation can actual cause diarrhea as well. The diarrhea normally comes from being impacted, and the waste has to come through, so the watery mess is simply trying to get around the impaction. Following me?

AS long as your water has not broken, the baby should be fine until full term at 40 weeks. Ask the doctor when he feels it will be safe for you to deliver so you can relax.

God bless and congratulations on your little one!

With my first I had helpp syndrome so I was induced at 37 weeks, but with my second one I had diarrhea the whole day before my water broke, it was basically just my body cleaning itself out before labor. It sounds as though your body is wanting to go into labor, I would check with your doctor ASAP!

I've had diarrhea with all 3 pregnancies, starting around 34-35 weeks on. With my first, I was induced 6 days past due. My second I went into labor 5 days past due. My third, I'm 37 weeks now and no signs of labor. So, for me diarrhea wasn't any indication for labor, just a very unpleasant side effect of being pregnant.

Definitely talk with your doctor about it though. There are some OTC meds that are considered safe in pregnancy for diarrhea (if it is that bad), but make sure you ask your doctor about what is right for you with being on the other medicine.

my experience was to have that about 24 hours prior to my mucus plug coming loose (bloody show) .... sorry for graphic descriptions - but when you're pregnant modesty is a thing of the past....ha.

good luck - I hope everything goes as planned and you have a safe delivery!!
