Diarrhea in 10 Mo. Old

My 10 month old is teething and I know that diarrhea is a common side effect of this, however this has been on-going since Tues. He's been out of daycare since early Tues. afternoon and can't return until he's 24hrs free from this virus. Does anyone know what I can do to help his little tummy. We've given him Pedialyte, but know that you can only give so much of that. He's soiling all his clothes, I can barely keep up with laundry. Help!

What can I do next?

My duaghter's pediatrician, Dr. Alvis told us to pick up Lactinex in her food. All you have to do is go to the pharmacy (call them first because not every pharmacy has them), and pick up Lactinex granuales. Then, you mix half of a packet with his solid food. If the diarrhea continues, you just continue doing that until it clears up. You don't need a prescription, but they keep it in the pharmacy because it has to remain refridgerated. There is no reason that he should have to wait for the diarrhea to clear up. Poor baby!!! And keep lots of rash cream on his bottom. Good luck!

Probotics are great. You can get them at any drugstore in the supplement section, break the pill open and sprinkle one a day on food or in his drink.

It is a virus going around and the pedi says it can last up to three weeks! It has been going around my son's prek. I hope that it doesnt last that long for him!

I would call my pedi's nurse and ask about children's immodium, they may want to see him. I am not certain what the ages are on children's immodium. Dehydration is very risky for little ones. Bananas and toast are good for them with diarrhea too. Keeping him hydrated is most important.

When my oldest (13) was little, we gave them a jello bottle to help firm things up. (basically boil jello, let it cool but don't put it in the fridge to get firm). It helped. I am not suggesting that to you, but you could ask the nurse what she thought. Things change so much as to what is ok to do for kiddos! I never had that problem with my other 3 that young, so I have never asked if it is considered ok now.

Hope he gets better soon..

this might sound crazy but it really works!!!! boil some rice. make sure you put a lot of water to boil with the rice. once the rice is almost done add a little sugar to add some flavor once the rice is completely done then drain out the rice and keep the water from the rice. let the rice water cool and put it in the baby cup or bottle whichever your baby prefers and let the baby drink it. keep doing this until the loose stools go away. the starch from the rice should stop the loose stools. this should almost work immediately. good luck.

Years ago they told us 24 hrs Gatorade, water or apple juice.
Then add rice white chicken. Slowly add other stuff. Every time we did not go the 24 hr deal it started over. We were on a trip and my son was so hungry for a hamburger and it was not quiet 24 hours and it started over. We went to the store and the kids took samples and that started it over. So go that 24 hrs and be very carefull about adding into it. Apple sauce is easy on the stomach too.
Rice like maybe cherrios. Or Rice baby food. G. W

Hi J.,
Give him starchy foods. Make some mashed potatoes, feed him Bananas. Rice, Applesauce & Toast. Reduce or avoid fats and sweets until the diarrhea subsides.

Other clear liquids you can give him include jello, slightly sweetened teas, and rice water. Offer small amounts every few minutes between bowel movements, up to eight ounces. Avoid sweetened beverages like soda pop, non-carbonated soft drinks, sports drinks, and fruit juices (particularly apple juice). If you give juices at all, dilute them half and half with water. Fruit popsicles are also an excellent source of clear fluids to keep him hydrated.

This is scary… I know first hand. Contact your doctor if this keeps up, your little boy is loosing weight or has signs of dehydration.

Good Luck!

Put him on the BRAT diet for a couple of days--
Bananas
Rice
Applesauce
Toast (plain)

All these foods contain compounds that help "firm" the stool, and most kids love all of them. Try to steer clear of anti-diarrea meds unless your pedi recommends them--for such a young baby, the BRAT diet is the easiest on the little one's tummy. Be sure to coat that tushy with lots of THICK rash ointment--I remember those awful diapers, and it seems that stool had extra acid & just whelped my daughter's bottom almost immediately. Keep repeating "this too shall pass" over & over! LOL

Is he otherwise acting normally (with the exception of the diarrhea of course)? We have always gotten the advice from our doctor's office that diarrhea can last for days, even past the phase when they actually feel sick. I agree with the other posters. Focus on starchy food!
