Diarrhea? - Chicago,IL

I'm a new mom & have no idea what baby diarrhea looks like so I'd like to ask your help. My three month old is on Good Start formula & his bowel movements are always dark green. The last two changes had a little bit of watery yellow. He has a bowel movement every other day, so it's not frequent. He isn't acting different, but to me it looks like he may have diarrhea. Any thoughts?
Thanks!

What can I do next?

My dr. always told me that anything that each baby has different looking stools. Depending on what they ate or if they are breast fed/ formula fed etc. IF he is acting differently or having lots of these diapers more than normal, than I would say it is diarrhea--
good luck

I don't think it's anything to be overly worried about, but I would call the doctor. Sounds like it's not frequent, so that's good. My son had Rotovirus (sp?) when he was about 8 months old and it was watery and yellow and stunk to high heavens! You definitely need to keep him hydrated and keep track of how many wet diapers he has because the doctor is sure to ask you about that. Also, since he is so young, ask the doctor what to keep him hydrated with.

Don't get too worried. Sounds like you are on top of this!

Hello MM the first thing you should do is get your baby checked out its not normal for a baby not to have a bowel movement everyday. now if there is iron in the Good Start formula is will cause constipation, the green stools are probably from the Formula, if the baby is constipated she or he or she will pass watery stools, the baby may eventually become dehydrated. You may have to change Formula's. Even though you take the baby to get checked there is one thing I want to tell you I learned this from my first child. She became sooooo constipated from her formula she could not pass her stools, we tried everything even prune juice which made it worse. This is good to remember as you are giver your baby formula you want to make to make sure you put a little bit of pear juice the baby pear juice in her formula, anything with a (p)what do I mean well pears, peaches such things are natural laxatives. as she or he grows older if you see the baby having hard time passing strools give him or her maybe a half bottle of pear juice you can do this everyday until baby goes. right now you can put about 1tbs of pear juice in his or her formula eveytiem you give a bottle to the baby, a little bit of water also would not be bad if he or she is constipated. I tell you I found this out with my first child, and by the time I had my son he was never constipated. also be careful how much iron is in the Formula. Dont worry!!! baby will be just fine.

Yep, it sounds like it. what you want to do is keep him hydrated. Give him pedialyte a few sips of nursery water. But just keep him hydrated. He needs it. Make an appt. to see your ped first thing tomorrow morning and let him or her know what has been going on. If you want to be more rest assured, call the doc now and see what he or she recommds.

I think I was told with my first that diahrea was 4-6 mostly watery poops. You have probably gotten it checked by now, but my experience has been most baby poo is loose. And, my 1st once went without a BM for 5 or 6 days. She also would skip days. The doctor said since she was mostly breast fed that it was normal up to 6 or 7 days. My only point is that your little one may not have a problem only going every other day - as long as he is not straining to do it.
Dont feel bad about calling the doc to ask, that is what they are there for.

Both my sons had a diapers like you're describing as babies. It was very normal! Is it watery or just a looser consistency than you're used to? Diarrhea will be so liquidy it absorbs into the diaper and does not stay on top of the diaper. Sounds more like something your baby ate is giving him looser stools. If you're really concerned or just want to play it safe, call your doctor's office and check in. They know best :)
