My son has had diarreha for 3 days now. he is not running a temp and is acting fine as well as drinking like crazy and eating regularly. We were giving him juice because he was so congested and was also on medicine for an ear infection (3 different medicines we had to try, hopes it cleared up now) Our Dr is not open this week since she is affliated with the college and goes by the college calendar which stinks. Anyone have any suggestions on what I should try or do? I gave him some pedilite today hoping that will help control the diarreha which is more like water now......

What can I do next?

My doctor always told me to follow the BRAT diet. Bananas, Rice, Applesause, and Toast. Cheese might help too.

I haven't read any of the other responses so may be repeating someone, but first off, sometimes antibiotics can cause diarhea. Also, when my kids were small straight juice caused problems (I had to dilute it at least half with water and even then only give small amounts - they were less than a year though, you may try reducing the juices some. Good luck!!

most antibiotics can cause diarrhea, just make sure your child drinks plenty of fluids to keep him hydrated, try bananas to help his pooh to get a little more solid, but not too many.

My daughter had the same problem she had so many ear infections and so many antibiotics it just stripped the lining of her intestions. All I had to dao was give her a bannanna mashed with rice cereal 2-3 times a day and yogurt for snacks. That helps put the good bacteria in the intestin to help stop the diarreha. After about 2 days she was much better hope this helps.

I agree with many of them if he was on an antibiotic there's your problem. It will have to run it's course. Pedialite, baby cereal for the fiber and drop the juice for now. Keep his diet simple so it can re-adjust to norm. Good Luck.

The diarrhea could also be a side affect of the antibiotics your son was on for the ear infection. Augmentin gave my daughter terrible diarrhea. Other antibiotics have that side affect too. Giving your son fruit juices or sweet drinks may make the diarrhea worse. The BRAT diet seems to help: Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast...and let me add Yogurt. On a different topic, I had to use Triple Paste to fend off the diaper rash from the diarrhea too. Good luck!

It may be roto-virus as if the diarrhea is super bad (like explosion diapers or green-like or very smelly).
He wouldn't have a fever with roto virus necesarrily. my son did not and he ate just fine. However, his bottom got SUPER sore and that was the problem for him.

However, you said that you were giving him fruit juices.

It sounds like a virus - and there is nothing the doctor can do if that is the case. However, since he had an ear infection, is there any place you can call?

my son had roto-virus for 7 days. It was absolutely awerful as I had nasty diapers every 30 minutes at some point. Pedalitte helped with dehyrdationg - but that was all.

It just had to run its course.

Do you think it could be having a reaction from the medicine?

Like the others said, I'd stop the juice, as it combined with the antibiotics are probably the cause.
Give him lots of water or pedialite...
Hope he gets well soon!

Hi there,
Looks like you got a lot of good advice.
You didn't say your sons age but with both of my kids when they had a long-lasting diarreah I put them on soy formula for a few days. It always cut it off and the Dr usualy didn't recommend it unless I asked.. it was like oh yea 3 weeks of diarreah, soy formula may help hahaha
They both had it cut off within a few bottles, sometimes within the first the diarreah stopped.

Happy New year!

Hi S. - I feel your pain, and my daughter feels your sons. She is on a course of Augmentin right now and it ALWAYS causes NASTY diarreha. OUr Doc. reminds us everytime we get it that the diarreha will come too. My daughter is getting better at telling us right away, but we have had several baths over the last few days.

My suggestions....go with the probiotics and yogurt. You can get probiotics at Fruitful Yield. I can't remember the brand we use, but we just put a small scoop in her milk or water. It is tasteless, so she doesn't even notice. I always continue giving her the probiotics for at least a week after the antibiotics are done.

Good Luck!
Jessica

S.,

You may want to check the side effects for the antibiotics. When my son was much younger, he had this problem when he was on Antibiotics for more than 7-10days. I would not be that concerned but I would continue with the Pedialite.

Hi, I am an RN and a Mom with grown children. Has your child been on antibiotics for ear infection? Some can cause very bad diarrhea. Especially Augmentin. Pedialyte will not control diarrhea but will rehydrate and replace electrolytes.

My son always had diarreha as a baby. I learned a few things along the way, the major being he is allergic to milk. However, this sounds like the flu bug my kids just had. No other signs came with it. I do know that when my kids drink apple juice it makes it worse. Look at the juice your are giving him, if apple is one of the first 2-3 juices do not give it to him. See if that works. Also, if you are giving him lots of fiber foods that will contribute (fruit is the worse). I don't know how old he is but if he is on solids give him white rice and bananas that are just ripe (very little green). If you go beyond that (soft banana) the banana becomes a diaretic. If he is on baby food DO NOT give him jar bananas, they don't help, trust me :)Hope that helps.

You might try putting your son on the BRAT diet. It's bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. I would also keep him on the pedilite for fluids. I would not give any juice as that may make the diarreha worse. If he doesn't improve in a day or so I would take him to a doctor, there are so many things that can cause diarreha. Did you know there are quick clinics in some CVS and Walmarts? They cost less and are run by nurse practitioners. Since your doctor isn't in you could call there for information. I hope he gets well soon.

If the meds he is on for the ear are antibiotics, they will cause diarrhea. The only thing you can really do is wait it out. You could try probiotics supplements but they would probably take longer to be effective than the antibiotic prescription. Keep him hydrated and never give anti-diarrhea medicine. It should be over soon:)

HI, sounds like your son is having a reaction to the meds., this happens a lot. We had to do two things, use probotics called florastor which you can get at the pharmacy, which is over the counter. This will replace the good bacteria that the antibotics took away. And secondly, make sure that you change the diaper immediately, and wash his bottom completely to prevent a diaper rash. Use triple paste and vaseline.

If your son had an ear infection and was given antibiotics, the diarreha could be from the medicine. Our daughter has an ear infection and just started antibiotics. Within 1-2 days she has horrible diarreha that is causing a horrible rash (which our doctor warned us about). Once you stop the medicine, it may go away on its own.

Happy New Year S.!

Depending on how old your son is, give him OTC Immodium. My family had the same thing last week and the Immodium did help. Hope this helps!

My daughter used to get diarreha, with no other symptoms, on a regular basis when she was little. Our doctor recommended the BRATs diet: Bread, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast. Those are binding foods which help control the diarreha. Good luck!

My daughter had diarhea recently and our doc said to push the liquids (like others have mentioned). What I didn't see in any of the other posts is that pedialyte is extremely salty and many babies don't like it (I tried my daughters and I can't say that I blame her). Our docs suggest was to go with a flavored one versus the plain. It worked for about a day in our house. I fed her lots of applesauce (she had an issue with a vaccine and wasn't feeling great) and she is great with drinking water. I also agree with the probiotics. A great source is kefir which is like a drinkable yogurt. I put my daughters in a valveless sippy cup and let her go to town on it. It can get a little messy if she tips it upside down but she loves to do things herself and this was a great help. You could also put it into a fast flow nipple and bottle depending on your childs age.

Hope your little guy feels better soon.
