Diapers Suddenly Leaking at Night

My son just transitioned from breast-feeding to whole milk. He loves his milk, and slugs down about 8 oz. each night before bed, way more than he ever nursed (a good thing in our minds, since he has been on the small side and is suddenly growing more).
He wears cloth diapers during the day most days, and has always slept in a disposable diaper since he sleeps about 10 hours. He goes to day care two days a week, and wears the same disposables there. I buy the grocery store brand, because at 15 cents per diaper, I can't beat the price. It has always worked for both settings until now. As soon as we started giving him milk, though, he wakes up soaked most mornings.

Can anyone recommend a disposable diaper that will hold a lot of urine for a long night? I am not willing to limit his milk consumption, nor wake him up in the middle of the night to change his diaper.

Thanks!

Buy a size up - if he is in size 3, try size 4. I always used Pampers Cruisers. They are more expensive but they never leaked!

My 2 yr old has always drank tons of water, and sleeps about 13 hours a night. Although there are occasionally times she will still soak through a nightime diaper, it is not too bad. We use Huggies overnites, they are in a purple package. Hope this helps!

I was the same exact way - not wanting to waking my son up because I would be the one to deal with it. And I need my sleep!! This is a transition because of the amount fluid he is taking. I used Huggies and i think no matter what diaper you use- he will still leak. It's either change him in the middle of deep sleep like real quick at 4 am cause that is when they are in the deepest sleep or let him wet himself awake. Or try just put huggies at night and use other diapers during the day.
Most of the time, I made my hubby change him at 4am. Also- whole milk is good but it can get babies constipated so water or juices during the day can ease it. Just an fyi.

A few suggestions that differ from those posted already:
1--Have you considered early potty learning? The book 'Diaper free before 3' is a great help w/ this and suggests kids can potty learn just as soon as they can sit up. At the very least, he could sit on the potty just before bed (I've found right after bathtime, once all the dinner liquids have worked their way down to the bladder works best for our daughter) and flush most of that urine out. I was reluctant to try this, but was amazed at how quickly my daughter adjusted to this. She peed on the potty after the 2nd time sitting on it (once we found a comfy one) and will pee w/in seconds of sitting on it now--just as soon as she opens up a book and relaxes ;)

2--Maybe try the cloth diaperer's dry solution of a diaper cover? Fleece (Old Navy's Performance Fleece works great)--or any 100% polyester fleece is a great breathable, yet water resistant diaper cover and will keep the moisture in that dipe and not on your son's clothes and bedding. 100% poly jammies will work, too (like some blanket sleepers).

Beyond that, yeah, my friends w/ heavy wetters usually just size up ;)

easy fix: go with a size up for night time use.

Hi Sarah,
Here's another vote for Huggies Overnights. The only times these ever leaked for us was when we didn't switch to the next size up quickly enough (the sizes overlap in the weights of the babies who can wear them, but our son is pretty thin, and we had to switch even earlier because his weight was misleading; sometimes he was too tall for the size to work) or because a sitter (usually my mom -- sorry Mom!) forgot to point his business down before closing the diaper, and he peed right out the top. She probably also didn't secure the diaper tightly enough. We had a total of maybe three-five leaks the entire time our son was in these diapers, and always for the reasons I mentioned. They are worth the extra money, IMO.

Hi Sarah,
My daughter has always had a problem with leaky diapers at night. I used the Huggies Overnight diapers until I found diaper doublers! They are like a feminine napkin without the plastic. My Safeway used to carry them but no longer. I now buy them at Babies R Us a case at a time. I also use the next size bigger diapers. I always had problems with store brand diapers leaking, now I only use Pampers. They cost more but I do less laundry.
Sincerely,
L.

I use Huggies Overnights also. All of a sudden about a year and a half ago my daughter would wake up with her diaper leaking and her pj's/sheets all wet. My cousin suggested I put her in the next size up diaper at night as it would hold more urine (she was wearing a 3 so I bought size 4). I tried Huggies Overnights in the larger size and we haven't had a leaky night-time diaper since!!

I too used the Huggies Overnights when my son started waking up wet every morning... They definitely helped and were worth the extra $$$. Also, you do need to make sure that his private is pointed down! That makes a big difference too. Good luck

I too used huggies overnights...I also bought the plastic training pants...the ones that are cloth inside and plastic on the out (I think they were Gerber and bought at Target) and at night I would put those over the disposable diaper. That at least kept the clothes dry. Hope this helps.
