Diaper Rash/Yeast Infection
Ok I've read a couple of requests on here for treatment for what you think is diaper rash, but in reality it is a yeast infection. My 18mo son was on two antibiotics for 10 days, because of pneumonia and a recurrent staph infection. This in turn caused Diarrhea which then caused bad diaper rash and now a yeast infection. The dr. started him on nystatin last friday, we took him back yesterday as it is no better and now we have more nystatin and oral diflucan. We just started the diflucan last night. The dr. said to put on the nystatin then over it put on Aquaphor. Aquaphor is my choice of diaper rash creams, usually in a day or two it's gone. (Miracle cream) I just want some back ups if this is not any better in a few days. Because at this point I don't know what else the dr. can do for him.
He's been a trooper through all this.
Also does anyone know if the diflucan has sleeplessness side effects? He was up for 2 1/2 hours last night, restless and very cranky.
Thanks for any advice!

I had the same thing with a little girl in my Day Care. But the mom started using good old baby powder and it seemed to help more. They say it can cause cancer and that is why they quit using it for babies. I wonder? G. W

Brenda is right. Whenever a diaper rash won't go away it's usually a yeast infection and usually happens after they take antibiotics. Even the boys. I have three children and learned with my first to use jock itch cream or yeast infection cream. I have learned the yeast infection cream is stronger but they both work. I always kept it at my home. It will work right away everytime.

You may want to try Triple Paste. I also swear by Aquaphor but last year my son was on a 30 day round of antibiotics and got a RAGING yeast infection. I used OTC women's yeast infection lotion and Triple Paste and it worked like a charm. Good luck - I know how hard it is when their bums are sore!

I never did have much luck with Nystatin for yeast infections with my daycare children....no matter how many prescriptions the doctors would write. I would buy a tube of either feminine yeast cream (the three day or less treatment), Lotrimin (from the foot and jock-itch counter), or Clotrimazole (same department). The yeast would clear up within a couple of days; but I would use it a few days longer. Now, I make sure my kiddos have a four ounce serving of yogurt (with live active cultures) at least once a day for prevention and I keep their diaper areas coated with vaseline. Any sign of a rash calls for a coating of Beudreaux's Butt Paste. Works for me anyway.

Hi,
We are just getting over a very similar situation.
We ultimately ended up with Bactroban ointment from our ped on Monday.
We had tried the yeast medicine- econazole, and it really wasn't helping.
I had also been putting the Aquaphor on top of the medicine, and my son's started clearing up right away after I got the Bactroban.
But, if the Aquaphor plan didn't work, my ped suggested mixing Maalox and cornstarch, and putting that pasty mixture on top of the medicine. He said I could try that on diaper rashes in the future as well. Interesting, right?
I haven't tried it yet, but that was our next plan!
Hope that helps!

Hello K C,
I have read your response about the yeast infection and I hope your little one starts to feel better soon! My daughter which is two has had several yeast infections due to antibiotics. My pedi has always told me to use the over the counter yeast infection cream that we would buy for a yeast infection. I would apply that and then I would apply destin on top to protect her bottom so when she tee teed it would not burn her bottom. I hope this helps!

I've had success using Aveeno cream with 1% cortisone. The only down side is that it burns when you are applying it. But it works great otherwise.

Every body has given good advice but lets not forget that yeast likes a warm dark area. Even though it means more clean up going without a diaper helps everything clean up faster. I put a pair of training pants on my daughter when she had a yeast infection to help keep the medicine on and keep her dry. Obviously you know immediately when they go to the bathroom when they are diaperless so they stay cooler and dryer to help in healing. Good luck!
