Diaper Rash from Hell - Milpitas,CA
My baby is almost 14 months. He is teething really bad right now, and has the worst diaper rash ever. My Mom has him during the day, while i'm at work. He has at least 6-8 poopy diapers a day. Most are small, but recently have been watery and more like diarihea. I use desitin and A&D (is that what its called) and neither are working. My Mom tried corn startch because she said thats what they use to do. Any other idea's. The only other time he has gotten like this is when he was using Huggies, when he was like 8 or 9 months. We switched him to Pampers and he has been fine. Nothing else has changed. Most people say its the teething, i just want to take his pain away! its driving me nuts.. so i turn to you Mama's of Mamapedia- what do i do?
Thank you very much.
** also, my baby has a tendency to be constipated. So we feed him prunes, but not recently since he started teething bad he has had the runs! so i'm worried about trying to change his diet (he is already off the prunes)**
So What Happened?™
Oh THANK YOU so much to all the answers we got. We have been doing naked time (crossing our fingers he doesn't do a #2, I did get pee'd on a few times over the weekend, but its all worth it!) We also, got the butt paste- this helped so much! The rash was almost completely gone by the next day. He hasn't had many watery poopy diapers so he must be past the teething stage for the time being! I am looking into cloth diapers because we have tried so many types of diapers and he gets some kind of rash with all of them except the Pampers. So i am thinking i will start doing the cloth diapers, just don't know where to get any :)
Once again, thank you very much!!

If he has diarrhea, feed him the BRAT diet. Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast. That should slow down the diarrhea and maybe give his bottom time to heal.

Boudreaux's butt paste http://www.buttpaste.com/BLButtPaste.php - When my son had a diaper rash that was raw and almost bleeding, Boudreaux's butt paste would have it almost better within a day and all better within two days. Desitin is good for minor rashes and everyday use, but Boudreaux's butt paste will take care of the bad rashes.

Take him to the doctor and ask for Nystatin. My little guy broke out horribly a few weeks ago and I took him to the doctor and she gave us that in a cream.
It worked overnight.

If the diaper rash isn't responding to cream, it might be a yeast infection. This can happen in babies - boys or girls. This happened to my daughter and it wasn't going away because I wasn't treating it properly. You can either get a prescription from your pediatrician (Nystatin) or even use something over the counter - ask your doc.

I agree with the idea of the boudreaux's butt cream...it is fantastic stuff!! Also...try getting some of the natural diapers ( sorry I can't remember, maybe by huggies...they are in a green and white package)..it is supposed to be fragrance free and not as like to cause issues. I would also 2nd the naked time...wash his little bottom...get him nice and dry and then just let him go au natural for a while!! Push water if you can get him to drink it...to make his urine less concentrated.
Good luck!!

Make sure he does not have a yeast infection.
That is common in boys and girls.
Take him to the Doctor.
Diaper creams, will not help a yeast infection.
Is he eating anything acidic? This can also cause bad rashes.
Take him to the Doctor. That is the only way to find out for sure if he has a yeast infection or not.
Or maybe he is sick.

NAKED TIME!!! lol. Every time my DD starts looking R., I give her as much naked time as possible. At 14 months, your best bet would probably be to find something fun to do in the kitchen (or any un-carpeted room), maybe pot and pan drums, so that if he has an accident you don't have a stain to clean out... A hair dryer set on low (or no heat, if you have that setting) or a fan aimed at his bottom during each diaper change to dry his bum off before putting on a new diaper will help too. If I can't give my DD naked time, I make sure to dry her with a fan, then I cover her bum in a layer of petroleum jelly to keep the wet off her butt. I haven't had to use a diaper cream yet! (she is teething too...)
~for the constipation, my MIL suggests diluted apple juice and oatmeal... :)

you can try an oatmeal bath. Aveeno makes one specifically for diaper rash, I bought them at Walgreens. then let him run around naked and air dry. Good luck!!

We just got over a bad one-- used Burts Bees diaper cream when he had a diaper on, a LOT of diaper free time, arrowroot powder to keep things dry and healing in there overnight, and a quarter cup of raw, unfiltered apple vinegar cider (Braggs brand) in his bath to get rid of any yeast. Cornstarch can lead to a yeasty diaper rash getting worse because the yeast likes to eat the cornstarch-- so it is likely that your child has a yeast rash. The vinegar in the bath will work (do not put it directly on baby--owie!)-- do one bath a day until you see it start to heal (should see improvement by the second bath if yeast is the problem).

I haven't had a chance to read all the responses, but my daughter just went through the worse diaper rash. It was itchy and blistery. Desitin wasn't working, so I tried lotrimin, but that wasn't strong enough. I finally went to the doctor and he prescribed something from the lotrimin family and it finally worked. I had to apply it 4x's a day. I alternated it with Desitin/Vaseline (blend them to get the best results), and it finally went away after a few weeks. Only to come back with a strange one that looked like a sun burn that peeled like a sun burn, but cleared up in a day or so with the Desitin/Vaseline combo.
I'd say if it doesn't clear up in a day or so go to your son's peditrician. A side note, we use cloth diapers and Seventh Generation disposables, and she still ended up with this horrible rash. We used the same with my other daughter and she never had anything like it, so it just depends on the kid.
Good luck. So sorry your baby is going through this.

I haven't had time to read the other responses, so I'm sorry if this is a broken record... My son went through something similar around 9mos, where he had a rash that wouldn't go away. I tried all sorts of diapers and creams. Went to the Dr and they said use Lotrimin 2x a day, and then also Hydrocortisone 2x a day... that cleared it up.... but once I stopped using them, it came right back! The only thing that worked for me? Cloth diapers. Within using 3 cloth diapers his bottom was clear. Now he is fine to use paper diapers,(we use Huggies sometimes) but he was in cloth for over a year. Now our daughter uses cloth and she rarely if ever has a red bottom. (usually it is from eating something new). Hope this helps!

Poor little guy. For the diaper rash:
*Okay I say change his brand of diapers again.
*Have your mom change his diaper more often...every hour at least....have her feel his diaper more often too. My boy peed often and a lot so I was changing diapers every hour and sometimes every 30 mins if he had a full diaper.
*Try another brand of rash medicine.
*Try a different band of diaper again (I changed 3 times)
For teething:
*Give him infant Motrin for his teething (at this age most likely will be molars?)
I say changing more often will help some. I had to try different brands.
Ended up with Kirkland Costco brand and that helped.
What else does he eat that might make him constipated so you can eliminate that?
Do you breastfeed or is on milk?

I'd go to the doc first off. My ped recommended a mix of Lotrimin (for yeast), bacitracin, and polysporin plus naked time. Would you consider cloth diapers? I've been doing this with my 3rd and NO rashes!!!
I use GroVia hybrid diapers, you'd need a "shell set" (ie. cloth at home, biodegradable disposable insert when out and about which are cheapest through Amazon Mom which offers 30% off). BumGenius Flips (which are a bit less expensive and have different cloth insert options, ie. organic cotton, stay-dry microfleece) are another popular hybrid. Both are available through www.nappyshoppe.com.

Diaper creams don't work on my son. We had to use hyrdocortisone or lotramin (anti fungal). When both my son and daughter have horrible diaper rash we use a thick layer of hydrocortisone and then we put another layer of vaseline over. That usually works, the vaseline acts like an extra barrier.
Best of luck, we just finished dealing with this with my son. Poor babies.

The only thing that worked for us was the Desitin in the purple box, not the creamy kind. I put it on really thick and reapplied after every change. I also changed them as soon as they went.
So sorry for your baby. That's got to be painful!!

I am also a big proprietor of naked time on the wood/tile/linoleum floor. For a long time a couple times a day.
Also, after a poop or pee, use water instead of wipes. Air dry before replacing a diaper.
Whether or not it's yeast, the bum needs air and a dry environment.

Triple Paste diaper rash cream has always worked well for us. We use it with my 13 month old and it sounds like she is dealing with a lot of the same issues as yours - teething, constipation. I also try to let her run around without a diaper at changing time for 10-15 minutes - so she can air out as much as possible. We have also changed diapers a few times - trying different brands to see if that's the problem. We recently went to the organic blend huggies - so far so good. Good Luck!

When this has happened to our kids, we use Aquaphor. It heals gently without the harsh chemicals and provides an awesome barrier for the next time he has a BM. You wipe it off and you are wiping the vasaline off not rubbing the skin. This prevents the next loose stool from intensifying the already bad rash too. I've used this for 4 years and swear by it.
Poor thing, I hope it gets better soon.

The best diaper cream I've ever used is Triple Paste. It's expensive but it works. You can't buy it at grocery stores; you find it at CVS or walgreens.
(My daughter has a food allergy and if she eats something accidentally, shecwould get the worst, angry red and painful rash ever. Triple Paste is the only product I found that treated the rash and gave her relief.)
Hope the rash clears up soon!

It is probally a yeast rash. You can try hydrocotortisone cream 1% and lotrimin af (the kind you put on feet, not the vag kind) mixed together. First rince the affected area in water (no soap just water), then pat the area dry with a towel, next set the blow dryer on low-cold and dry the area, let area air out for 10 to 15 mins without a diaper, last mix a dab of both creams and apply to rash. Put on diaper. Due this 3-4 times a day until rash is gone. If no improvement within 2-3 days then take your baby to the doctor.

first and foremost make sure hes not sick by a dr call them and say u want his stoll sample checked. there was an epidemic of sorts with eggs and ecoli o something recently and as fa as the rash its self. if it is yeast (which u can get fom even being sweaty) u need a special cream frm dr. otherwise for just normal rash. dnt wipe him too much. rinse clean in lukewarm bathwater everytime and pat and air dry. then form a baie between the skin and excriment be it vasaline etc it may b the acidity of the poopies. lol.

So sorry to hear that your little man is going through this.
We've tried just washing the baby's bottom with every diaper change---we've tried having our babies walk around w/o a diaper for as long as you can --(hoping they do not poop or pee). We've tried Desitin a couple of times..and it seems to work for us.
If it's really too painful for him, you may just want to see the Dr..they may have to prescribe a topical ointment for him. Good luck.

My daughter gets a diaper rash when she is teething. In fact she's two and half and still getting one right now. So that could be the cause.
She did get a really, really bad (blistering, peeling) rash that wouldn't go away when she was around 6 months old. The rotavirus vaccine gave her runny poop, which gave her a bad rash. I did EVERYTHING to try to get it to go away. It lasted months. What finally did it was to use paper towels and water to wipe her bottom. I've never gone back to "wipes".

I've found that a product called Boudreaux's Butt Paste works quite well. Also, if you think changing diaper brands may be a good idea, I've found that the Kirkland brand from Costco seems to be good. I'm basing these recommendations on my experience working with children in childcare for a few years. These two products have seemed to give the overall best results with the children I've cared for.

Man did you get lots of answers! If you are trying the purple desitin and not relief I would definitely see your doctor - yeast/fungal infection could really be the culprit and you want to make sure you get the right disgnosis so you can use the right stuff - Purple desitin is stronger than butt paste and A&D, and mary kay night cream/eucerin/aquaphor is more of a preventative or for slight diaper rashes. Don't waste your money trying everything, just see your Doc. You'll get a prescription and then you'll have it for next time it happens (cuz it's likely he'll get it a handful more times in his diaper life).

I would look at what else your baby has been eating because a lot of the time my daughter would get diarrhea and diaper rash from too much citrus, etc.
The best diaper rash treatment in my opinion is to let your baby go diaper free as much as possible to let him air out and heal.

My daughter has a tendency to get these really running poops and afterwards it is bright red and burning and so painful. When I asked my pediatrician he said it was akin to an "acid burn." For her it is worse when she is teething because of the copious amounts of salivia. He told me to put Maalox or Mylanta on the diaper area with cotton balls and let it dry. Then use some neosporin for any open sores. Finally Flanders Buttocks Ointment (I get it on Amazon.) Though a triple paste should work fine. For my daughter it is a miracle. What would be a rash that lasted for weeks, would now be gone in a day or two. I put it on at every diaper change to protect her diaper area.
