Diaper Rash-EXTREMELY BAD!!! Please Help

My 11 MO little girl has very sensitive skin. Two weeks ago she got a stomach bug and had dirrhea really bad. We have been treating a bad cash of diaper rash. I mean she is just scratching her bottom every time she can. It is rough like sand paper, red, irritated, sores and bleeding. We have used Triple Paste, Butt Paste, Desitin, Balmex, Neosporrin, and Vaseline. Nothing is working and it is not getting any worse, but it is not getting any better. I am at my witts end with it and feel so bad because she is so uncomfortable and in so much pain. We never have had this problem this bad with our 2 YO so I don't know what else to do. If I called the Pedi is there anything prescription that they can give? Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Ok, I called the pedi this morning because I could not stand it anymore. I spoke with her head nurse who told me it is a yeast infection and common in infants especially if they have been sick. So, she told me to get Lotrimin Anti-Fungal for jock itch...sounds yuck...but I did that. She said to apply it 4 times a day and put Triple Paste on after I apply the Lotrimin. She said to do this for a week, but should notice a drastic improvement in 24 hours. I started at noon today and by 7:00, just before her bedtime, put the 4th treatment on. I don't see any improvements what so ever, it actually looks worse. I guess I am just going to have to wait out the first 48 hours to see if it improves or we will be making a trip to the doc's office. I want a miracle treatment that will look better in a few hours as I am so impatient right now...but I will wait it out and see. Thank you to everyone who has responded...I greatly appreciate all of the advice recieved and have made notes in my book for other posted remedies.

K., I'm so glad you did call the dr yesterday. I was going to tell you yesterday to do that but couldn't get in.
I'm a grandmother raising my gd's now but when my son was about 2 he came down with a rash like that... it was not diaper rash and I had to take him in..for the dr to treat him.
So I'm s thankful you called the dr..
I do hope she gets better.

Hi K.,

It definitely sounds like a secondary infection and though most everyone has mentioned yeast, it could also be bacterial like Moya mentioned. I sympathize with you because my daughter has very tender skin and I live by Boudreax's butt paste on a regular basis, but have run into the yeast several times. Only just recently did we have to deal with the bacterial and the pedi gave us bactroban to put on it and it cleared it up completely though it did take a full 10 days. definitely go to the dr because at this point it's been quite awhile and they'll be able to get you started on the right thing immediately. I did the presciption cream morning and night and butt paste throughout the day to keep her more comfortable. good luck!

Both of my sons had a problem with what sounds like the same thing. Its a yeast infection. If it is kind of pimply and has little red bumps and even blisters and very red. Try Lotrimin cream-the antifungal for feet. Put it all over her diaper area 4 times a day and put some other cream over it(desitin, AandD Ointment,or other). This is what my ped told me to do and it works. If she is really bad it might take a week to 2 weeks to completely heal(that how long it took my oldest son to heal). I hope this helps. I have never responded to any of these but I know how awful it feels to have the love of your life so uncomfortable and in pain.I just couldnt pass it up.

My pedi told me to stop using diaper wipes and use wet washcloths. Don't wipe, just squeeze the water on her bottom. It's a little messy, but it cuts down on irritation. I've actually used a hair dryer (on cool!) to make sure my daughter was nice and dry before applying cream. I've read to use lanolin (which I've done, and it seemed to help.).

It could be a yeast infection. Use monistat cream. If it is a yeast infrction if can move to her blood. Thats what happened to my son.

My daughter had the same kind of diaper rash when she was 3 months old. What her pedi told me was to let her lay around without a diaper on to allow the air to get to it. I think they also gave me a prescription diaper rash cream, but that was almost 6 years ago now. I don't remember the name of it. I hope your lil girl gets to feeling better quickly.

until it gets better wash the wipes out in the sink before you use them. Its gets the "alcohol" out. My pedi told me that even if they say alcohol free they are not and havve some form of alcohol in them. After you clean the area dry it really really well. then try Dr. Smiths. It comes in a jar and works great. My daughter went through something similar and I am so sorry it is such ummm heck to change diapers!!! Good luck sweetie!

I would call your pedi immediately! It sounds like it could be a strep, staph or impetigo. I would try Aquaphor and STOP using wipes - simply use a wash cloth with warm water. The wipes will make her bum sting and irriate the rash worse. I would also let her air out as often as you can. Good luck! I am also experiencing diaper rash issues with my 6 month old, but after a trip to his pedi he was diagnosed with eczema.

My son has had that before. They can get a yeast rash on the bottom, and they do have prescriptions that work great for that! I would call the pedi and just ask. You could put just regular vagisil on it as well. His pedi had me do that as well. And it helped.
