Diaper Rash - Gilroy,CA
OK, its time to ask the experts. My son has had a diaper rash for 3 weeks. I have been using bag Baum, Lotramin and now the doc suggest adding a little cortozone cream 1% not working still bad. Oh yah I have been using Costco brand diaper since her was 3 months old ( not sure if that makes a difference), I changed his diet nothing but bland foods. I have tried Desatin in the past and found not even the extra strength did any good. Question: Is there anything that someone can suggest as far as an ointment that will help. His rash seems to have little dots and is very red and inflamed. Or just suggestion period I'm at my end with this rash thing.
Thanks for any advice..

Hi Camerons M.. I too have been having problems wit hdoaper rash and my DD name is Camryn. I took her to the Dr 2 times for it. It might be fungal is what one Dr told me. He gave me an RX and I was using Hydrocortizone and the next day it was almost gone. She gets such bad diaper rashes that she bleeds...poor baby. Just really sensitive skin. She still gets them every few days but they go away pretty quickly just as they came. One diaper change nothing the next BAM bad rash... weird... idk what it is.

Sometimes a child will get a yeast infection that will present as a persistent diaper rash. Have you actually taken him to the doctor? If not, I would.

The dots are a sign that it is a yeast diaper rash, he will need a rx for it. My dd and ds got yeast rashes alot as infants. I would suggest switching diaper brands too. Take him to the doc, you will get nystatin cream or something similar.

I have found the Burt's Bee's "Baby Bee" diaper ointment to be VERY good. That is what worked for my son.
Also, the "Florasone" ointment, which is a natural cortisone alternative to hydrocortisone creams. Whole Foods has it or Amazon.
OR, your son may have a Yeast infection rash. This is common. If so, you need to use a Yeast cream for it, because the usual diaper creams will NOT get rid of the rash.
If it is a Yeast infection rash.... then your Doctor should be able to diagnose that and tell you. You tried Lotramin, which is a Yeast cream. But there are various yeast creams with different active ingredients in it. Our Ped, suggests a yeast cream with "Clotrimazole" in it, for example.
Also, it could be something he is eating.
How OLD is your child????
If breastfeeding, it could be what you are eating, too.
If nothing works, tell your Pediatrician, take him back to the Doctor, and get him re-checked.
It really sounds like a Yeast infection rash.
You probably have to get a Prescription cream for it, Nystatin, or whatever your Doc, prescribes.
all the best,
Susan

It may be a yeast infection. All of my kids have had those things in the past. In fact, my older daughter and youngest son were practially born with one! I tried everything, but everything just made it worse so I went to the pediatrician. I was prescribed nystatin for it each time. And it works wonders! You may want to ask your pediatrician if it could be a yeast infection and if it is, see if he will prescribe you some nystatin. I hope all goes well.

I've never used bag baum, so I don't know it's make-up. When we had this issue, my pediatrician said some kids have very sensitive skin, and creams with a drying effect (like the paste type stuff like cortisones and desitin) can actually make the condition worse.
She recommended cleaning the area and changing frequently (no harsh soaps or perfumed wipes), leaving the diaper off until the area is sufficiently dry, and using only an ointment like A & D. For us A & D was the ticket! On rare instances I forgot to pack it it the diaper bag, Vaselline was okay til we got to the A & D. The ointment type salves create a water barrier, keep the skin softened, and reduce inflammation.
Usually, within a few hours of using it, baby seemed to get fast relief! Try it and see how it goes for you.

Butt paste! "Boudreaux's Butt Paste." I swear by it and I even believe it's better than Desitin.
You didn't mention how old your son is. I would also suggest that you stop using wipes that have a scent to it. If you can, use unscented wipes and always, I mean, ALWAYS make sure his bottom is totally dry before putting on the ointment and diapering him. I always used a diaper to fan my baby's bottom dry, then put the ointment, then the diaper. It's so very important to change that diaper the moment he has a bowel movement, no matter how small the amount. The acid in the feces is going to make his rash so much worse.
Also, get some Aveeno oatmeal bath soak. Just measure out a small amount, you don't need to use the entire package, and let his bottom soak in the oatmeal. I used to also make just a very small amount, maybe a tablespoon or so, mix it in a small bowl and use a soft cloth to put on my baby's bottom. Don't worry about rinsing...just dry very well, use a diaper to fan his bottom and then ointment and then the diaper. Rashes can be quite persistent, I know, I've dealt with some serious rashes.
