Hello Moms-

I need some advise.

I have a 5 1/2 month old baby girl who has come up with some serious and red looking diaper rash on her vaginal area. She has not had any diaper rash up until this past week.

The only new thing that has been added to her schedule is that last week we started giving her Organic Gerber Brown rice cereall. I called the doctor who told me that the cereal has nothing to do with the diaper rash, unless her poop is "clay like", which it is not,

Any advise on what I can use to get rid of this diaper rash? I feel horrible since every time I use a baby wipe to clean the area she starts to cry uncontrollably. I know she is in pain but I don't know what or how to make it better.

Help!

Please stop using any baby wipes at this time. wash with Dove soap after every poop and regularly. Just damp her with clean paper towel to dry after wash.Leave her a few minutes to dry then give her pampers.

I saw you got lots of answers but I didn't see this one. My daughter had bad rashes so we stopped using wipes, don't use soap everytime (only after BM) because it is too drying. I got a kids plastic bucket and kept it in the bathroom and everytime she had her diaper changed I'd put warm water and a splash of vinegar and wipe her down. The vinegar makes the area inhospital for the different bacteria and such that cause rashes. When she had a rash I would dry her bottom with a blow dryer on low, then use a zinc ointment to protect. She was a foster child and when she was visiting her bio mom she would come back with wicked rashes and this always worked. Good luck!

My daughter just had a really bad red rash with some peeling. It turned out to be a yeast infection which I think can be related to diet. We were given a prescription and it went right away.
Good luck

Hi V.!
Arbonne puts out a great baby line. Give me a call ###-###-#### or go on my website irenejaeger.myarbonne.com. We use bonticals, no mineral oil, (which is terrible to put on anyone's skin), never tested on animals and no animal biproducts, no added chemicals or fragrances. My mom's love this baby line!!!

Good luck, I.

I absolutely swear by Motherlove diaper rash ointment -- organic and olive oil based. Amazing. You can buy via their website directly or local breastfeeding supply stores usually have them too (Upper Breast Side in NYC for instance). I was also taught that the important thing is to pat them dry after cleaning and before any ointment application. I use a very soft absorbent cloth that I switch out every 1-2 days, instead of more disposable ones.

Also, I would not agree with your doctor that diet doesn't affect rashes. It is not necessarily affecting it, but to say 'no' without investigating further is somewhat irresponsible to me and goes against my personal holistic philosophy. Nutrition, new foods, balance in body -- all that affects our body's chemistry and secretions. I am not an expert, but I would definitely treat this holistically, as some other moms have suggested in the responses.

All the best.

The BEST thing in the world for diaper rash is Triple Paste. Go ahead and invest in the big tub (target typically has a fair price on it) as you will find yourself reaching for it again and again. Our son had so many diaper rashes that we switched to the sensitive wipes and the diapers with the least amount of perfume. But, we also started using triple paste all of the time instead of his other diaper pastes and the rashes subsided completely. If it does not work after a couple of days, call your DR and he/she can prescribe something more powerful.

Could be a yeast infection. Make sure you always wipe from front to back. The doctor can prescribe a medicated diaper rash cream if it is yeast. Have the doctor see her in person to determine what type of rash it is.

Ok, I too had to deal with the headache of diaper rashes and trying to change a baby who is screaming, kicking, and doing everything else but lay there for me. I tried several kinds of OTC. Spoke with my son doctor and she told me to use bacitracin ointment. I was shocked. Well that night, I did it and guess what. It worked better then OTC. The doctor told me to treat like it is a burn. Believe it or not my son use to get diaper rashes more often using the other types of ointment, but since using Bacitracin ointment, he barely gets them now. Now that is all I use for diaper rash. Good Luck..

Hi,
I have a lot of experience with Diaper RASH. My now two year old got severe stomach bug last year and with the constant bowel movements, he had a severe rash. The first thing to do is to stop using wipes, they contain alcohol and it makes the rash burn. Use cotton balls soaked in water to gently clean the area and dab dry with a soft cotton cloth. Also, try keeping her without a diaper as much as you can. I used to make a cloth cotton diaper and put it loosely around his waist, so i wouldn't get soaked everytime, but his butt still got enough air. And the only cream that worked for me was Triple Past. It's the best! it's also on the expensive side, but works wonders. But you do have to use it liberally to get results, applying a thin layer will not work.
Hopefully all this will help. Good luck, I know it's gut wrenching to see them in pain like this!

hi V.. if the rash is spootted it could be a fungal rash and may need nystatin cream which is a prescription. "triple paste" works great also. i would definately call your pediatrician or take her in to have them look at it in case it is fungal and your need the prescription. i hope she feels better and good luck!!

Try using an anti-fungal like Lotrimin. Sometimes diaper rash is fungal and won't go away without it. I have used on all three of my kids at various times and it starts to work pretty quickly.

Also, at the various points in time when my kids had bad diaper rash (before they were rolling around), I just lay them down on a big mat with towels under them and left them there without a diaper for an hour or so here and there. That really helped. But if your daughter is moving, that's a little bit harder.

Good luck!

Hi
I agree with others posting, it may be a reaction to the cereal. When my son 1st came home from the hospital I started using viva paper towels wet with water instead of wipes. It's the softest paper towel, and I didn't have extra wash cloths to wash.

Every one else has sent you some wonderful advice. I wanted to add something I didn't see yet. While you are trying to discover the cause of the rash, you will also want to include some baby powder with corn starch to help keep her dry and change her more frequently. Try not to let her diaper get soaked before changing. This will help alot.

Both my girls had this, and it was usually a yeast infection. You need to use a med. cream for it if that's what it is. You can take her to the Dr. or you can try an over the counter yeast infection cream. A reg. diaper cream prob. won't help. After the rash is gone you can slather her with diaper creams to help prevent further rashes. You might want the Dr, to see her since this is the first time? Good luck!

Sounds like a yeast rash. Try a combination of OTC hydrocortisone 1%, lotrimin AF, and zinc oxide in equal amounts and apply it twice a day. If you don't see any improvement in a few days call your pediatrician to have it looked at.

Baby wipes do sting diaper rash. When our son has it bad, we use cloths and water instead and it's MUCH better. Cut up some spare burp cloths and just put them in a tupperware container with some water. Put used ones in a plastic grocery bag and you can wash them later. As for the rash itself, I just discovered Triple Paste, which you can get almost anywhere. It's fragrance-free and hypo-allergenic. It also is very thick, so acts as a barrier while it's helping heal. Try to give her some air out time during diaper changes so the rash has some time to dry a little. These method cleared up the worst diaper rash we've seen yet, so hopefully it will work for you. Good luck!

I am so sorry to hear about your daughter's diaper rash. While I don't know what may be causing it, I do know of a few things that can help. Firstly, don't use the baby wipes because they usually contain some bit of alcohol which makes the rash burn more, instead use luke warm papertowels or regualr towels with a bit of soap which should help her a bit. And wipe soap away with another luke warm towel. Secondly, experienced Mom's have told me about this cream called A -Mantle which I have since bought and now tell everyone about, it will get rid of rashes quickly, sometimes, depending on the severity, it will be gone overnight. I have included a link, it is a bit pricey (buy a small tube at first, more cost-effective and you can also see if it works for you) but I am telling you it is magic cream. I have found it in a few local drug stores as well, if you can't find it ask the pharmacist, it isn't in the baby aisle, it is usually where the creams are for people with ecsema and other dry skin issues. Good luck and hope your little one feels better soon!

I've been there. When my now 7 year old was a baby, the Dr actually diagnosed him with chemical burns from his own poop. It was awful. I found that instead of wipes, a paper towel with warm water, or when it was really bad, I would put him in the tub and just keep splashing water on to clean him. Then, I used a product called Triple Paste. I had to ask for it at the pharmacy, but it was great! Very thick, with lots of zinc (i think) It created a good barrier and also healed at the same time.

Hi V.,
WHen my daughter had a diaper rash I did stop using the wipes and wiped her with just a wash cloth and water. I also let her nap on a bunch of towels without a diaper whenever possible. I always use A&D but what really did the trick was MUSTELA. A little expensive but well worth it. Hope her diaper rash clears soon.

With my daughter I use Aquaphor - any redness clears up within hours. I tend to slather it on when I use it. Best price for it so far is at wallmart. My Dr has also recommended it for her chin/face she is teething now and drooling up a storm.

Hi V.,
Poor sweet pea...I highly reccomend burts bee diaper ointment and country comfort ointment and powder. I have a 7 &1/2 year old and a just 3 month old. Neither of my girls have ever experienced diaper rash. And the country Comfort products are really soothing for and hives or rash! They are all natural products that you can find in a Health Food store, Whole Foods or on line. You can also try chamomile tea bag in the bath with her...it is known to sooth rashes.
good luck, I would also try changing brands of cereal...you never know?

V., The younger two boys of mine had yeast infection on their backend and on part of the scrotum. I have learned that it was a llergic reasction or something their body cannot consume. For example, my youngest can't have spaghetti and O.J. I am assuming it's acidic that's the problem. I used Desitin and I smother it all over the backend and the scrotum and they act like it's a relief. You should bring her to the dr's and have it checked out. I never had girls so I don't know what is appropriate for girls in that area. The prescription the pediatrician had prescribed never worked on my boys and butt paste I heard was great but it didn't do anything for my son. so, I found Desitin to work wonders! every child is different and some things work for some and not for others. Because she's a girl and in that area, I would have checked immediately because it's THE most painful thing. I have learned that the wipes it's only good for the get the stuff off if you can get it off with water and let it air dry and make sure it's completely dry then put on whatever works, Desitin, Butt Paste, Vaseline and smother it on her for relief and don't give her what she had until it heals up and knowing what it is she is to avoid, I would not try it again for another couple of months. That poor child. You're a good mom for doing something about it. Oh, I was wondering, where is she during the day? The caregiver(s) take into consideration how to deal with this so she's not in pain?

A nurse at the hospital gave me some great advice when I had my first son: DON'T USE WIPES EVERY DIAPER CHANGE! If he just peed, I wouldn't use wipes on him, just air dry a minute and put another diaper on him. I also received the diaper cream that I will not go without, ever-BEAUDREAUX's (spelling?) BUTT PASTE! I make sure my mother also has a tub of it for she watches either child. My almost five year old still cries for Butt Paste once in a while when gets a slight rash down there.

I have been lucky....neither of my kids had terribly severe rashes. I have tried other creams, but find that at the first sign of redness it works by the next diaper change. My little guy (13 months) has had two or three moderate rashes and this worked within a couple diaper changes!

Hi V.,
I found wipes a little harsh for my boys when they were still in diapers. I used wet baby washcloths. Washcloths didn't dry their skin and my boys never got diaper rash. Another thing I used constantly was Vaseline Petroleum Jelly - the old faithful one unscented. Each time I changed my boys, I would smear a thin coat and that helped tremendously.
Maybe you should use the petroleum jelly and stop using the wipes for a couple of days, see what happens.
Good luck.

Hi!
I am sorry to hear about the baby's diaper rash. Went through some time times with my daughter when she had a stomach illness and the constant bowel movements made her raw.
First of all -NO BABY WIPES - they are burning her.
Second - and it was a Godsend - go to the drugstore and get a creme called TRIPLE PASTE - hopefully they have it in stock or find a drugstore that has it. Slather it on - it will help her greatly. It is a bit costly - but well worth it. Since you have to clean her - use a soft cloth and warm water - perhaps mild soap - please no wipes.
Wishing you well - you will see the triple paste works.

First off, stop using the wipes. Take a few out and run them under warm water rinsing out the ingredients in them thoroughly. Then wipe her down and pat dry with paper towels. Let her air out for a few minutes.
If you think this is tied in with the rice cereal, stop it for a week or two and see if anything changes.
After, then apply a nice coat of Desitin ar Balmex cream, Is she teeting on a particular toy or anything? Are her hands in her mouth, is she drooling more? She may be starting to teeth.
GOOD LUCK!
