short and sweet. i'm looking for a new diaper pail. i currently use the diaper decor but it's old (3+) so i think it's loosing it's capabilities to hold in stink. but i like it (it looks good) and am thinking of upgrading to the decor decor plus. it's just that you can't get it down in st. mary's and you'd have to order refils online as well. has anyone used the newer diaper genie II? what do you think?

Hi A.,

I have the diaper genie II and also experienced stink problems. I overcame them with disposable diaper bags. You can buy them at any dollar store. They come in packs of 100. They are biodegradable and neutralize the odor. They're well worth the penny.

I have the Diaper Genie II and have been very pleased w/ it over the last 21 months; the only downside is the price of the bags, but it is worth it for me! You can use it w/ just one hand, which is a must.

I have a story for you. When my daughter was about 6mths old i used a Diaper Genie for about 1 week. It never got full, and never got emptied. It got moved into the Junk room, and I found it when she was 3.5 YEARS OLD!!! There was no CLUE that it was still in the house, MUCH LESS housing 1 weeks worth of dirty pampers!!! So I say Go with Diaper Genie, just don't leave it hanging around for 3 years!!!

BTW: I was Living in West Indies at the time!!!

I have the dekor plus and we love it. We had the dekor for my daughter but after 2 years we threw it away and got the diaper genie. We HATED it. One it does not hold nearly enough diapers and 2 it is not hands free!! When we had our son we got another diaper dekor.

I love my diaper genie II. We have been using it for 9 months and never had a problem. I stock up on the refills when they are on sale. I've even found them on sale at Kroger. Also, on occasion, Diapers.com will have them on sale (if you've never bought from there, you can get $10 off of your 1st purchase). I also get coupons from Babies R Us. They frequently give out 15% off of one item and I will pop in when I'm by the store and buy 1 refill. It's probably nuts but shopping around and using coupons helps on the refills a lot. I've managed to get a surplus so I probably have about 10 refills on hand. That way I won't get caught and have to pay full price. I've also heard some people say they've figured out how to use regular grocery bags - could probably Google that. It is a great product and works well. Good luck!

I used the Idaper Genie and a friend used the Diaper Genie II. We both thought they added a different smell to the stink, making it worse, rather than controlling it. We each looked at other pails, and really felt that the best bet would be to get a small trashcan, put a bag in it, and then use diaper bags/grocery bags and throw it away. It elimated the smell, and I actually prefer the grocery bags b/c they're a little thicker and I never have to buy refills-we just get them anytime we go grocery shopping. You can empty the can every other day, and never worry about any extra smells in whatever room the can is in. We keep ours in our bathroom, and it works wonderfully. Also, then we were able to buy one that matched our decor exactly. My SIL actually uses the same style in her nursery and it looks great in both. We use the metal can; I don't know if that might be different from a plastic can.

We have been happy with our Diaper Champ. It is easy to use and you can use any kind of plastic bag with it so no special refills. Our daughter (2.5) can take off her own pull-up and put it in the Champ and flip it on her own so it is very user-friendly. We typically dump the solid stuff into the toilet and flush it which helps cut down on the diaper pail odor. Good luck!

I used the diaper champ because it could use any bag and I got my friends the new one for their new baby. Both of us love/loved it, I never really had a problem with smell and I used cloth diapers. Good luck!!

Hello,

I used the diaper genie when my two boys were in diapers and it was the greatest thing ever. Kept the stink out of the room and was very very easy to use.

I also love my diaper genie II. Everything is available at Wal-mart, and though it seems prices have recently gone up a little (on everything, to be honest) it is still competitively priced, easy to use, and effective.

Diaper champ! No special bags to buy. We dump solid waste in toilet so it's not smelly.

We like our Diaper Champ. It's simple, and uses regular bags (we often recycle plastic shopping bags).

Love my diaper champ - it holds regular bags and we empty 2-3 times a week with the only smelly part being during the bag change.

When we had my daughter we got one Diaper Genie 2 and one Diaper Champ. The Diaper Champ was awful, it stank, the room stank, we ended up putting it out on the curb for the trash (or neighbors) to pick up. Now we have 2 Diaper Genie IIs and LOVE THEM. They hold in the stink VERY VERY WELL and one refill lasts a long time. And the refills are available everywhere it seems-- BabiesRus, Walmart, Target... etc. Good luck!

Hi there,

I have 2 children at a huge gap in age. With my son I used the diaper genie 1...I loved it, it reatained the smell well. It was a pain in the butt to manuver with 1 hand, so it ultimately was a 2 hand job from what I remember (he is now 9). With my daughter who is 20 months old, we use the diaper genie 2. It's so much easier to use than the 1st one. It's a 1 handed job for sure! It doesn't retain the smell as well, but it does a fine job. I buy the refills here and there. We don't just use the genie, we also use the trash can, we have a 2 level home so we aren't always going to run upstairs to use the genie, so I don't really know how often you would need to use a refill...babies/toysrus has them on sale sometimes for $5 each. That's about what I pay for them at my store.
Good Luck!

I never used a diaper pail, though I use disposables. I wish I could have dealt with the cloth diapers....(more story there than I want to go into here.)

Anyway, I find if you take the diapers out often enough, I don't have a problem with the stink.

I tried two methods: Keeping the trash bag shut tight, and just letting stay open.

Leaving it open lets you smell the initial poop stink, but that fades after awhile. When you leave it closed, you get less of the initial poop stink, but the anaerobic bacteria must build up, because over time, it stinks worse than leaving it open.

Bottom line, if I tie up the trash bag, I have to take it out to the garbage once a day to keep the smell out, if I leave it open, and deal with the initial poop stink, I can take it out twice a week and be fine. But this is for only one child in diapers.

I love my diaper genie II ... it is great at keeping the smells contained and the refills are easy to use. I empty it once a week (on trash night) and have never had any problems with an odor in the house.
