Put her in onsies as much as possible, even if you put them on under her normal clothes. It makes it harder for her to get to the diaper and over time she might drop the habit. It's a little harder to find onsies in this size but I was able to get some at Walmart.

Well, if she's making a mess with whatever's in her diaper, I'd put her in a time out in the tub (easy to clean, harder to get out) immediately after she does it each time. Don't give her a big frustrated reaction. Just be really cool and say something like, "Uh oh, looks like a little tub time." And then take her directly to the bathtub and leave her in the tub for a couple minutes as a time out. She'll figure out quickly that it's not so fun to do that. And then be really really sweet and fun when you take her out, so she knows how much fun it is to be out of time out and how boring it is when she's in time out.

One word....overalls. They come up so high she won't be able to get her hand in there and if you get a pair with long pant legs, she won't be able to reach up there. I would put a different cute onesie underneath it each day. If you need to, you can wash them in the sink when she goes to bed, toss them in the dryer with a dry towel for several minutes and let them hang to dry all night, they will be ready for you to put back on her the next morning on top of another onesie!

My son did this also. I found 24-month onesies at Target and kept him in one at all times until he outgrew them. I think it did a pretty good job of breaking his habit. If he starts it again, I will have to purchase some larger ones online and do it again. Good luck to you.

regarding the duct tape - I'm sure the duct tape could be used on the diaper itself, not attaching it to the baby! Just so that the diaper couldn't be removed. The original poster was describing a child who removed the diaper and did artwork with the poop.
The child may still be able to reach into the diaper!

Good luck with solving the problem!

Has she been anti-biotics lately? Sometimes that sort of behavior is caused by yeast. Kids typically are on anti-biotics very often which can cause yeasts in their little systems. Yeast is aggravating and can cause a child to put her hands in her pants.

My husband's cousin's daughter did this, as well as take off her diaper and "paint" the walls/crib/whatever with the poop. They tried putting her diaper on backwards, but that didn't work. So they got desparate and used duct tape. That's was the only thing that worked to keep the poop contained and not having poop-painted walls and floors.

"Most" girls are ready for potty training by 20 months...don't miss the window or it will be harder to train her later on! My son is in speech therapy and does not communicate well either and we were able to potty train him with minimal (well on his part, a LOT of effort of on our part) effort - toddlers do not have to communicate well to PT. Get the book Potty Training in Three Days by Lois Kleint. It's EXCELLENT and very easy/short to read too. Once you PT her your life WILL be easier, I promise!!

When she was in diapers, my daughter loved to do this too. She just liked the way the "fuzz" inside the diaper felt. (She still does even though she is potty trained now and only wears pull ups at night.) Sometimes she carries around an unused pull up just for the "fuzz." Maybe if your daughter had something fuzzy to touch she'd stop putting her hand in her diaper.

Have you tried putting a onesie on over her diaper?

Edit: sorry, when I posted I was somehow on a page where I couldn't see the other responses. If the onesie idea doesn't work maybe try potting training. I know you think she isn't verbalizing enough but she could learn the ASL sign for potty. Just a thought. Whatever you do, good luck!

All little ones do that, maybe she is too hot in the diaper and it is her time to potty train.

I watch an almost 2 year old that does this. We have to put onesies on her and put her in pants because she will also go in through the bottom if she wears a dress or shorts. It's just a phase and does not mean she's ready for potty training. It's just another thing she's figured out how to do.

Have you considered potty training? Maybe she doesn't want it on her.
