Diaper Covers...

We are currently switching from disposable to cloth diapers and I already have the diapers ordered, but haven't found the right covers. I want something vinyl/plastic free. No PUL, it doesn't have to be organic but just no plastic of any sort. The wool is too expensive and too bulky. Any suggestions would be great. thank you.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

So, today I purchased the g-diapers...I really like the diaper covers. I'm going to use the prefolds inside the g-diaper cover and keep the flushables as a back-up just in case we run out of clean cloth. The prefolds folds fit perfectly inside the g-diaper cover...I think they fit better and look more confortable than the regular inserts that come with them. Tonight will be our first night trying them out, but I think it will work great. I'll let ya'all know how it goes! Wish us luck! Thanks for all your help!

The only covers besides wool that I have tried that don't contain anything you mentioned are the Cot'n wraps covers. I thought they were just "ok", but if you're trying to avoid what's in 99.9% of most diaper covers that aren't wool, they might be what you're looking for. They cannot be washed in hot water, because they are cotton and will lose their "waterproofedness"--they air out quickly and rinse well with cold water in the sink. Here's some info about them http://www.greenmountaindiapers.com/cotnwrap.htm
Lots of companies make microfiber/fleece covers, but I'm assuming since you are trying to avoid synthetic linings, those probably wouldn't work for you either.
Most covers are going to be bulky, unless they have the PUL in them. The Cot'n wraps are pretty trim, but if you have a newborn or little one who is pretty stationary, sitting on them in a wet diaper for a long time will cause them to seep through somewhat.
Good luck!
PS--Is there a specific reason you are trying to avoid PUL/vinyl?

Okay my son is 11 so this has been a while. I remember finding a goretex cover that worked very well (can't recall company and didn't find the company I got them from with a quick google search - but did see other goretex covers) and then there are these folks who make really nice covers http://diapercovers.com. I rembember liking that the velcro held up much better than other covers and they had snaps too. I also know this company replaces their product without hassle if anything isn't right. They might be a bit more expensive but I recall that the companies that had the more expensive covers outlasted and outperformed the cheaper ones you could find at Target or other places by far. Good luck and enjoy that little one.

Hello,

We have been using G diapers for our 14 month old daughter and love them. They are a cotton cover with liner that you can insert a cloth diapers or G inserts (a biodegradable gel cotton product. We have found this is a really environmental friendly alternative.

Here's a link to some 100% cotton Nikky covers. I love the ones that I have!

You have to change the diaper a little more frequently with the 100% cotton than with wool or plastic, but it's not bulky at all and the link above has these covers on sale right now :)

Best wishes!

I've had good results making my own covers from thrift store 100% wool sweaters (Merino wool is softest and not too bulky when it's machine knitted). Here's a link for a pattern http://www.borntolove.com/frugal-column2.html Then you shrink the cover in hot water to desired size, and lanolize it (can use Lansinoh cream) for waterproofness. They are soft, breathable, warm in winter and cool in summer. Cheap, easy and all natural. Also, Nikky's has a cotton cover you can order a catalog from Babyworks in Portland at babyworks.com. I've been really happy with all their products. I use Bummi's whisper wraps most of the time myself, and wool covers for night.

Hi R.,
I had the best luck with Fuzzi Bunz; they are fantastic!! They are pocket diapers with sizable snap closures, and they are awesome in terms of leaking and wasing up well. Best source for them I found was cotton babies online. They are a bit spendy but well worth it. Good for you for going cloth!!!

I read that you already purchased your diapers but I just had to tell you that I switched from disp. to cloth as well and I absolutely LOVE the Fuzzi Bunz Diapers. Easy to use comfortable and easy to wash. You buy them online if you're interested in checking them out-just search for Fuzzi Bunz diapers on a search engine.

I know there are diaper cover patterns on the internet. A friend of mine has made them out of layers of fleece or flannel and fleece. The fleece isn't very absorbent and works pretty good for moisture leakage.

We get all our diaper supplies from babyworks.com, a family-owned business in Portland, OR. I'm not affiliated with them or anything - I've just been very happy with their products and assistance! The Bumkins are pvc, phthlate and vinyl free. And they also care some cotton covers (Nijis and Nikkys), as well as the fuzzibunz and bumgenius all in ones.
