Diaper "Champ"

Hi Moms,
We are using a diaper champ for our disposal needs...it works fine but it STINKS. Any ideas about how to combat the smell (without keeping it in the garage which defeats the purpose)? Thanks!

What can I do next?

We had a diaper genie, which I think is about the same thing. With baby #2, I just took out the diapers once a day.

But while I was using the genie, I found that I could fill the tub completely, add bleach and dish soap, and soak the whole thing and that helped with the smell. A lot of work, though!

I found that, no matter what specialty diaper pail you use, once the kid starts solid foods, the days of 'not-so-stinky diapers' are over. You may as well get a small garbage can that has a lid (one operated by foot pedal) that you line with a plastic grocery sack. Empty it out daily and the smell won't be so bad.

I babysit at a house that uses that pail and I really have to say I do not like them. The idea of having fecal matter in the same room where you have your baby sleep and nurse is not ideal in my opinion. Not to mention the smell that takes over the whole house. It is easier than putting it in the garage that's true but if you have to wash it all the time well... what works for us is we use the pail only for pee diapers and put the poop ones in the main trash because that bag goes out most every night. When your baby is bigger you'll be able to flush the poop first then throw the diaper in the pail. Also, we close the diapers up real tight before we put them in there and I buy those scented trash bags that come on a role. They are cheaper than those fancy Glad one's. The scent does help too.

We had the Champ and it was great at first. Then, the stink started to be too much for it as our son got older. We got the new Genie instead and it totally helped it. No stink at all - except when the diaper is first changed.

I had 2 under 2 so I needed the Champ and thankfully had a great experience with it! I emptied it daily, used costco kitchen liners, washed it down weekly and put a Bounce sheet in the bottom and never had a problem. For those "special I'm sick, mommy "diapers that on occasion a baby would surprise me with (lol), I would use a grocery store plastic bag to wrap and then tossed it in. Didn't do that often, but in the middle of the night it became a handy trick.

They have smelly disks that you can put in the bottom or you can use scented liners... but honestly then it just smells like chemicals and poop. HAHA.

What's working for us is to just change the bag more often and the biggest help is to make sure to dump the poopy diapers into the toilet before disposing of them in the baby litter pail.

As with any other diaper container, you need to wash it out every now and then. I have the champ and I just swish around some vinegar and hot water every 2 weeks. I also put a little baking soda in the clean garbage bag when I change bags. That seems to really help with odor. I've even heard of people putting kitty litter inthe bottom of the actual container.

I have the diaper champ and I just make sure to empty it once a week and spray it down really well with lysol or bleach water. I also make sure to febreeze in his room every once in awhile hours before I know he is going to be back in his room for a nap. His room doesn't smell like poop or chemicals.
