Diagnosing Dairy Sensitivity?

I have read a lot of messages on this board from moms whose kids have dairy allergy/sensitivity. I was wondering how you first determined your child had this sensitivity, especially with babies under 12 months who have not yet had cow milk. What kind of reaction did your child have that prompted you to take him/her to the pediatrician?

What can I do next?

Anytime my daughter had any dairy she would have diarrhea and terrible stomachaches. She would even react if it was something baked with milk in it. We took her to an allergist when she was around 15 months old and he is the one that diagnosed her food allergy. Because she would have a reaction to milk even in baked goods he felt it was an allergy not a sensitivity or lactose tolerance. She was also allergic to corn. When ever she had corn she would get a rash around her mouth and become very moody. She just wasn't her happy go lucky self.

My son had eczema on his cheeks when I was exclusively breastfeeding him -- basically from day 1. We introduced cow's milk fomula to supplement my breastfeeding at about 4.5 months. He seemed fine with it for a few weeks (other than the eczema, which we didn't associate with a cow's milk allergy at the time) then when we introduced cereal mixed with a little cow's milk formula at 5.5 months he broke out in hives.

Hi L.,
When my son was an infant he spit up ALOT!! Every article of clothing he had was stained and I was convinced he had some sort of acid reflux. My doctor suggested we switch to soy formula and it did help but he still spit up more than normal. He is 3 now nad he is totally fine with milk and dairy. But if your daughter is having problems; gassy, spitting up, etc. I would try soy formula it tends to be a lot less harsh on their bodies. There is also a test you can buy online to check what her allergies are. It's a lot less expensive than going to the doctor.

My son experienced vomiting and hives with dairy products. He also had chronic eczema from a very early age when he was only getting breast milk. He was tested for allergies at his 12 month visit and found to be allergic to milk, eggs and peanuts.
