Hoping someone out here has some feedback - My brother-in-law had a little baby boy 2 months ago. His wife breast fed for the first month off and on, but had to stop due to a job that would expose her to toxins. Ever since their child's health has deteriorated. He has been put on several formulas, currently he is on one that I don't believe you can even get in stores. He has diahrea so frequently that sometimes they stand over the changing table for hours because everything that goes in comes out the other end. They finally went to the ER in Hershey and had an endoscopy and colonoscopy yesterday. The colonoscopy came up with ulcerative colitis - they biopsied the ulcers and the results will come back in 1-2 weeks. They said to keep him on same formula - no feedback, they are going to have to deal with it until then - Does anyone have any insight? My son had blood in his stool and constipation b/c of problems with his formula after I breastfed, but nothing to this extent. I have searched lit and websites and come up with nothing. Any thoughts would be appreciated

Hi L.,
I'm sorry to hear about your nephews distress, poor little guy. I'm not sure what causes the ulcers in the colon especially as such an early age in life. My Aunt is 48 years old and has been dealing with Ulcerative Colitis for 24 years. It is not a life threatening condition, however she does have to have a colonoscopy done annually, and usually a biopsy is done at that time. That's all I really know, if you'd like me to talk to my Aunt to find out more info send me a personal message.

hi L., you didn't mention which formula the baby is on but my girl at 2 months of age stopped completely drinking the formula which she had until THAT day. at that time she was on similac. it took a few frantic calls to the ped to get them to believe me that my baby wasn't drinking much if any. she went to the hospital where they performed a few tests. they never told me the diagnosis except saying that she had an 'irritated intestine' i think and that she neds to be given alimentum (formula) very expensive but can be bought at a grocery store. to my surprise that worked. she started having normal bowel movements and such, she started drinking fine. it seemed to be that alimentum was much easier on her belly and she drank that until 12 months of age. maybe they should try alimentum?

I have 3 kids that I used formula and never had a problem. Plus everyone I know used formula with no problem. I am suprised formula did this, I know some kids have problems with some types but thats a problem with the children and not the formula. I'm sorry to hear about this and I hope the baby gets better soon!

Okay,

I am going to go out on a limb and say that the formula probably has nothing to do with the colitis. I have, IBS, Colitis, and Chron's disease, nothing of which was CAUSED by the food I ate. No one knows what really causes any of these chronic illnesses. Their, and my best guess is a combonation of stress and genetics. Look to the family for other cases of digestive disorders, the three of which I have is a good place to start.

I am sorry he has been diagnosed with this at such a young age. It will be a difficult time for him especially as a child. You will need to find the foods that aggrevate it. With everyone it is different. Basic set offs are milk/dairy, seeds, and food allergies. So the next step, for me, would be to go to an allergist and have him tested for food allergies. This will not cure the colitis, but will help keep it from flaring up.

As far as the current flare up, you may want to cause him the least stress possible. Try not to be stressed around him, no fighting around him. Try to keep him on a schedule so he knows what to expect and is not stressed out by things. I know it sounds ridicuolous, but stress is one of the biggest triggers of any gastro illness.

If you need further info, I will share my course of treatment with you, just reply.

Good luck, and I wish the little guy the best of luck.

L.

have them check for something called c dif colitus it is an intestinal infection. my son had it when he was a couple months old it caused him a lot of problems. he had bleedy stools along with diarhea that would not stop. there were days that i would go through close to 30 diapers because of him having the runs. we also found that with our so he could not have the powdered or concentrated formulas. he needed the ready to use formula. he was on alimentum ready to use formula up until he was 14 months old he is now 22 months and only has a few problems from his bought with cdiff colitus and acid reflux that was made worse because of it. we still do not know how he got the cdif colitus because it is passed from person to person the drs think that i might of given it to him because of taking care of his grandmother but they are not sure if she gave it to him or the other way around. but i would have the drs culture him for c dif colitus just in case because that could be what is causing all of his problems. the formula do they get it through wic and if they do does the wic office get it straight from there warehouse because i know that my daughters dr was gonna put her on a type of formula that you are not able to buy in stores. you have to either get it from your dr or have someone order it for you. i hope you nephew gets better. take care
