Hi All,

Do any of you all know how they test children for diabetes?

Juvenile Diabetes runs in my family and I am having my son tested for it on Friday. Just wondering if anyone has had their children tested lately and could explain the process? Is it through blood work or a urine sample? Does anyone know?

Thank You!

What can I do next?

Both of my children have Type 1 Diabetes (formerly referred to as juvenile diabetes). Both blood AND urine are tested and your child does not need to fast prior to testing.

I fervently hope that your kiddo doesn't have T1d, but I am here if you need someone to talk to.

Does your child have symptoms? If so, I would go today and not wait until Friday. If you are just worried because other family members have it (and you haven't seen any symptoms), please don't feel the need to test unless a doctor recommends it.

Has your son exhibited any of the symptoms of diabetes: increased thirst, frequent urination, dry mouth, fatigue, weight loss, blurred vision?? If so, get him to the doctor today! Don't wait til Friday. They will probably draw blood and also do a finger stick to test blood sugar. If his blood sugar is elevated, they may also do urine test to test for ketones. Type 1 is an auto-immune disease. If you have Type 1 relatives in your family, there are several studies going on to track people that may be at risk. The JDRF website has lots of great information (juvenile diabetes research foundation.

I believe it's a blood test.

Is he having symptoms? If he is do not wait. If he is not, I could almost guarantee he does not have it. Blood and urine are tested. How old is he.

Please be aware that if this test is negative, you still need to keep a close watch on him. Diabetes could develop later. Be sure you know the indicators. Go to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation online and find out a lot more about what to watch for. If he does test positive this time, go to JDF to find support groups for you as parents -- support groups can help you learn a lot of lessons from parents who have already "been there" with kids who have Type 1 diabetes.

My friend's daughter turned up with Type 1 at age 11 out of the blue -- no history of diabetes in their family on either side, at all. And the girl was not showing any symptoms other than fatigue -- so be aware that all the classic indicators may not be there every time for every patient.
