Devotional BIBLE for Older Children

I have been looking online for a children's Bible that also has some devotional or reflection questions for my 8 year old.

My son has a kids Bible, though it is actually just the Bible in larger print, with slightly simpler words. But that's all it is. Not that that isn't enough!! ;)

He is old enough now that he will be staying in the sanctuary with us during the service, and I would really like it if I could find him a Bible that he could bring with him, and have questions and explanations. Almost like mini Bible studies for kids. But a step up from devotionals. He has a devotional book and I think it is a little 'simple'. I'm not talking about the Bible's answer for day to day cutesy kid's questions, but a way for him to be engaged by the Bible and understand God's word.

If anyone has one that they love for their kids I am all ears!

THANKS,
K.

The Adventure Bible is what he has now. And though I love it as his Bible, it isn't quite what I am looking for. I want him to have a resource that he can go to to help him understand God's word.

What can I do next?

At 8 and 9 my grandson used the Adventurer's Bible, but I then got him the NIV 2:52 The Boys Bible, it's great. It's designed for boys ages 8 to 12 and based on Luke 2:52. It uses the full text of the NIVR and contains a study system called the 2:52 Track that takes boys through the Bible with each track highlighting people, stories, and Scriptures that help boys grow towards maturity and manhood.

We give all of our young children large print Bibles without notes. But, we have a daily time together of reading the Bible and discussing it as a family. Then, we are teaching them, they can ask questions, and it becomes a habit. If you are at all familiar with Matthew Henry's commentary, which is an *excellent* resource written in 1706, you might be interested to know that he compiled this book from taking notes during family worship as a child growing up. Amazing, really. I would really encourage you to spend that time with him as a family studying God's Word, and you and your husband explaining to him what things mean. If you don't know, don't be shy about saying that. It will give you all an opportunity to research it and find the answers.

My son has one that had a grey metal like cover. It had lots of cool notes throughout the Bible about customs and sometimes gross stuff that is just what boys that age like. I didn't find that exact Bible online from looking at the covers, but it might be that this is the one with a redesigned cover: http://www.familychristian.com/shop/product.asp?prodID=74.... It is designed for boys 8-12.

I agree with checking out a good Christian book store to see what you like. When you do, check out the Hands-On Bible by Tyndale House Publishers. This is what we use for teaching our 1-5th graders and we really like it!

Might look at the Adventure Bible. He might be a little young but it will be one he can grow with. I love www.christianbook.com for researching/ordering kids supplies.

Blessings to you!

OK, my son has the "Armor of God" bible (you can see at the above website). The only complaint I have is the type is VERY small. Another that has gotten great reviews is the NIV Boy's Bible. It is for boys ages 8-12.

Happy shopping :)

I know you're shopping online, but I advise finding a Christian bookstore -- or even a couple of them if there are more than one in your area -- and really sitting down with several kids' Bibles and Bible study books. You can't tell from a few pages posted online what a Bible translation or study book is really like. I recently was seeking a good, age-appropriate, inviting and interesting book for our godson and found I just had to sit down with several and spend some time reading them to see if they were at the right level of reading and understanding for him (he's 12) and if they also were something that spoke to him at his age and stage -- in other words, not too "kid-ish" and not too "old" either. You have to look at content, even with Bibles; some have boxes in the text with questions and thoughts for the kids to consider, and others don't; some of those items are higher quality than others (more thought-provoking, more or less controversial depending on what you want and think is appropriate, etc.).
