Deodorant and My 10 Year Old

My son just turned 10 at the end of July. He does not currently wear or need to wear deodorant. However, his gym teacher is suggesting it for after gym class this year, since he will be changing for gym. I am concerned that he will forget to even put it on after or put on way too much of it. Like I said, he does not wear it now as he is not really developing yet and does not sweat enough to make him need it. He does play hockey and smells to high heaven after, but that is normal and he takes a shower immediately after any hockey practice or game. What is the advice from other Mom's out there?

What can I do next?

The gel deodorant is super easy to over use, but the stick really only goes on so much. It's hard to overuse it. I also suggest you teach him to use it whenever he dresses to avoid smelling. He won't notice it, and you might not at first, but other kids in his class will immediately, and kids can be really cruel about things like that. No matter if it only happens once, that one incident could stay with him depending on the kids who notice. Better to avoid the entire problem by starting deodorant early!

Oh... the hockey smell. Just sending you my sympathies on that one. One of my brothers in a goalie. My god. Most corpses smell better!

I'd suggest going ahead and grabbing a stick of it. I've notice guys don't really care about stinking until they get rebuffed by girls for it... but it will get him in the habit, even if he doesn't use it every day.

Get him a stick of it, no need to wait until he already smells because that can be embarrassing.

Teach him how to use deodorant.
No big.
My son has been using it and using his favorite shower gels since he was 8.
He's 15 now and has about 3 hairs under each arm so "developing" isn't really the issue. Boys can be extremely stinky.
It's never too soon to teach good hygiene.
Just get him a roll on or stick and show him how to do it and let him have some at home for after the shower and have some at school.
My son still to this day likes having me smell his pits to make sure he smells nice. A little ritual he will soon give up one day, and then I'll miss it.

Don't stress.
He's old enough for deodorant.

Best wishes.

Yep, throw a Right Guard stick in his gym bag, whether he uses it or not is up to him I suppose. Just show him how to do a couple of swipes so he doesnt look like a nerd in front of the bros ;)
Chances are most of the boys his age have no clue about deodorant either, but hey guess what? They are all about to! ----- part of turning into a non stinky man.

Go ahead and start him on deodorant. Just try to find one that uses kid-friendly ingredients like Growing Basics (which, I believe, is developed for kids). Everything I've read about anti-perspirants and even some of the ingredients in the so-called "organic" deodorants is pretty disturbing, so even I'VE switched from a heavy-duty anti-perspirant to the "crystal" deodorant. My daughter uses one called Lavanila, which is super expensive, but worth every penny. It smells GREAT (although maybe a bit too "girly" for your son) and uses safe ingredients. My son uses Tom's, but I'm probably going to switch him to Growing Basics once he's done with his current supply.

It is time Mom. A few yrs bk in my daughter's 4th grade class after an August PE class in the hot sun their new teacher announced it was time for all to shower or bathe daily and start wearing deodorant daily. I was a little taken bk when my daughter told me this after school the day it was announced, but agreed with this request fully when my duaghter told me how nasty the classroom smelled after the kids returned from PE. The bathing thing daily is something that must be done to start them on the path of good personal hygiene for life, I think by the end of the school year you will find the deodorant necessary too, might as well get him started. Good luck with this.

I think he is way to young for deodorant. I think you should get a doctor's note if necessary stating that he does not need it yet. I believe that starting to use it will change his body chemistry before his time. Good luck.

I'd get him "deodorant" and not anti-perspirant. I believe Old Spice and Toms are the only ones who make deodorant with no anti-perspirants in it. GL!

My 11 doesn't use deodorant yet as he's not stinky (but my daughter needed it at 9). Make sure to get a deodorant and not an antiperspirant. Also, it shouldn't be put on after gym, once you're already sweating it is too late, he needs to apply BEFORE gym. I will be getting some for my son's locker this year. You can let him know how many swipes of the stick he needs, and don't send him with a spray
