Check with the airlines on "standby fares".

L., Call a local mortuary and they can give you some advice. I believe the first thing required is a certified copy of the death certificate. Another suggestion is that your relative contact a local church or the Red Cross.

I agree with T.F. I don't think the airlines offer bereavement tickets discounts anymore. But Southwest IS a great airline to work with...my daughter uses them when she flies home from Florida because they are usually the most reasonably priced and they allow 2 checked bags per flyer with no additional charge. Is it your stepsister that you are trying to get home for the funeral? She isn't by any chance a military dependant is she? ( Living in Hawaii is why I ask!!) ...if so she could fly space available on military flights for free...although it would be a bit more time consuming.
I would suggest that she go to her local Red Cross office and see if they have any ideas of how to help her find the most economical way to get back to the main land.

I have bought a bereavement ticket before, however, I don't think the airlines do it anymore. The last time I had to fly in for a funeral, 4 yrs ago, I could not get a bereavement fare.

We fly a lot and we usually have free tickets "in the bank" on our airline accounts and we usually keep a ticket or 2 around just for emergencies like that.

Southwest is a great airline and usually has good fares. Check them out online. The only other airline we use is American through their website as well. I do not do discounters..... too much up in the air with that type of deal and you are at risk.

I was able to get a bereavement fare three years ago on American Airlines by calling the airlines directly. They needed the name of the funeral home and my relation to the deceased. I did not need to have a copy of the death certificate. I hope this info helps your family out. I am so sorry for your family's loss.

I am so sorry for your loss. Contact a travel agent, not online, but an actual travel agent. I got breavement discount when my brother passed but that was 16 yrs ago. I heard somewhere they don't do that any more but it doesn't hurt to ask.

I'm sorry for your loss. Your sister should contact the airline directly to get her ticket. There are no bereavement options when doing the online search.

I am sorry of your loss. Just ask the airline that you will be using for the bereavement rate. All airlines have it and ask if there is also a discount for senior citizens (sometimes a senior is age 55+).

I am so sorry. When my grandfather died, I called the airline for details. You may need a death certificate or something from the funeral home but it was not a big deal. I do not know if the info is now on the airlines websites as well.

Unfortunately I just had to do this....the best one I could find is with American Airlines. And this was just last month (we called other airlines and most don't do it anymore). Call them to get the fare. They are set, and expensive, but less than last minute fairs and then you can switch the flights with no fees. Just incase travel plans change. They were great!

I have a sibling that killed himself in the saddest of manners and it is never a easy experiance to deal with. I can only tell you that I learned that the life he lead was filled with no hope and bleakness for even the simple things in life or he might not have made this choice. I hope that the rest of the family can be supportive of one another and help others to not make this same decision. My children have really thought of this experiance when going thru thier troubles. My heart goes out to you and hope for your strength.
