Day 19 of Vomiting and Diarrhea in 4 Year Old

My 4 year old got what we thought was a stomach virus back on May 16. He vomited a couple of times and that seemed to be it. Then, 3 days later he got fairly bad diarrhea. Again, it went away and that seemed to be it. Then he began vomiting in the middle of the night once every 2-3 nights and having diarrhea during the day, but not every day. We have taken him to the doc twice and they've taken a stool sample and LOTS of blood--all have come back normal (thank God!). Interestingly, his 1 year old brother had a few hours of throwing up and then was back to normal. I'm waiting on his doc to call back and tell me the next step, but he seems to be getting worse and I'm having a hard time just waiting around. He's not bouncing back like he has been, he's more tired, etc. We push liquids like crazy and I know he's not dehydrated but this cannot be good for an extended period. Has anyone dealt with this before? I'd love to hear about your experiences. Thanks!

Milk allergies can be developed & milk protiens can show up as meny things not allways recognizable. My daughter has a milk allergy & I have become an expert lable reader. If he does have an allergy find a good allergist & get lists of things to look for on lables.

I'm assuming your dr tested him for rotavirus, right? Both of my sons were hospitalized with rotavirus - but MANY people get it and, in a lot of cases, its manageable without being hospitalized. in both of my boys (who had it at different times), it started as vomiting...then the diarrhea started a day later. it could be many different things, but I would at least ask if they tested for rotavirus (which might have been one of the things they tested with the stool sample). Good luck!

K., This sounds serious could he be allergic to something or playing with something that might be contaminated. Look around th ehouse and see if something may be out of place. Did he try anything new?
just a suggestion
hopes he gets better

I've had no personal experience with this, but my friend just went through it with her 2 year old. He had terrible diarrhea and then would throw up once in the middle of the night. It lasted and lasted. Finally they realized he was developing a milk allergy. As soon as they took him off milk products, everything corrected itself. Maybe your tests have shown that he's not allergic, but if not it's worth a try.

good luck

take him to the hospital. my son was admitted for vomiting and diarreha. they tested him to see if he was dehydrated or not. they gave him iv's and admitted him overnight and he was a lot better. sometimes the hospital have different ideas about things that happen like this. talk to his doctor about taking him to the hospital for further observation or tests.

Has he been tested for food allergies, especially milk?

We went through the same thing around Christmas with my 4 year old little girl. She had the stomach virus on and off 7 TIMES!! It started before Christmas and we weren't completely rid of it and not catching it again until late February or early March. It was crazy!! It was a long time until she started to eat and drink normal. She just kept saying her stomach hurt but eventually we did get over it. Hang in there I feel your pain!!

It could be a virus that they keep trading off back and forth, and one that is highly resistant to your cleaning products. During a lull in fluids being expelled, get your kids out of the house for a while, then open your windows (so you don't pass out) and use a combination bleach/hot water to wipe down every surface that you can, that you don't think will be damaged by bleach. I went through this last summer, and there are also some toilet bowl cleaners that tout themselves as flu virus killers. Don't let them drink from the same cups or share food. Anything they mess on, wash in very hot water. Try to keep your house like a hospital would for germs, to keep them from picking it up again. Wipe stuff down frequently. Stick toys in the upper rack of the dishwasher (ones that won't be damaged) to disinfect them. Wash all your linens in hot water, towels, bed sheets, etc. I suspect that last year, we may have had some sort of Norovirus (it was SO contagious!) and the health department said that the virus could live UP TO 4 WEEKs on a surface. I couldn't get over that. Even if it's not a Norovirus, it could be living long enough to keep the contagion going.

After each instance of diarehea and/or vomiting, get some of that high probiotic yogurt. Their little tummies might not be back to normal, and just might be very sensitive. Although they might now have an allergy, they could have a temporary sensitivy to certain foods, such as dairy, so cutting back or eliminating those items might help them digest. (Yogurt should still be ok to give.) Kids digestive systems are more senstive than ours, they are still developing. You can also buy freeze dried acidopholous at CVS or GNC, and add a little bit to their food or something.

Good luck!

My first suggestion would be a food allergy but if it's not that my dad had something similar and the Dr. passed it off as a virus and did nothing. Then I remembered at a job I had a few years ago, they would recommend acidophilus for vomiting/diarhea, it replaces the good bacteria in your gut. I told my dad about it and within 2 days he was better!! I get it at CVS (maybe you can order online) the best one out there is called culturelle. I think there is a culturelle.com even. It's natural, you can't overdose and no side effects, safe for children and babies even! You've got nothing to lose in trying it!! Good luck to you!!
