Daughter Has Had a Fever for Almost a Week

if tylenol isn't working, try ibuprofen. I always give my son ibuprofen, using tylenol only if need-be. I hope your daughter is staying hydrated. When my son is sick I up the 100% fruit juice and offer fresh berries and banana and oranges and apple. They're jam packed with vitamins and can help fight off whatever's going on. My son loves fruit and it's a nice 'treat' since they can be expensive a lot of the time - so we don't buy them often.

No, I've never heard of a fever for 6 straight days. I hope she is getting lots of good rest, as that will help her body fight it off too. Are you staying home and taking it easy?

When my son's temp is at 99.-something I rarely give him any meds. His fever is there because his body is fighting the bug (whatever it may be). The only time I give him meds to lower his temp is when it gets too high - in the hundreds. At 100.6 I maybe wouldn't have given your daughter anything and just let her body fight whatever's going on. If it crept higher into the 101s I'd give meds.

Is there another pediatrician in your doctors office. Make an appt. first thing tomorrow with the other doctor. Let another doc evaluate her. Two heads are better than one.

No, I have never heard of a child so young having mono. I only know teens.

yes. there are two types of mono. one is from kissing/sharing drinks, etc. the other is from the body being over tired. my son tested positive at 8y (2 years ago) for being positive to mono exposure. which means that he had been around someone that had mono. I started asking around. turns out an aunt that had been to a family party had been diagnosed around that time frame, but she never took time off from work, rested, or told any of us. I was NOT happy.

- strep
- food allergy
- ate something bad - tomatoes, sour milk, etc.

Take her to the ER-they will treat her

My sister had mono for most of the 2nd grade.
It was a tough year.
Every time our Mom thought she was over it and started going back to school she'd come back down with it again.
My Mom had to work with the school to send work home for most of the year.
It's a low grade fever so it might not need bringing down all the time.
Go easy on the Tylenol - it can be h*** o* the liver, try Ibuprofen.
Keep her fluids up and see what the test results say.

Sounds like what our daughter did with strep. All three of my kids ended up with it because we didn't know. The doc we saw said that most kids are just getting headaches and upset stomachs. My husband usually gets a sore throat and starts vomiting within about 12 hours with strep. Maybe your daughter is that type of kid. Anyway, I hope she feels better soon!

Did they do step test? Our son was having a fever for several days last week with no other simptoms and ended up with strep.
I just talked to a friend at church and her 4 y o had a fever for 7 days last week with no other simptoms... doctor said it's a virus going around.
I guess if they tested her for mono they did the blood work, so they would be able to see if anything is wrong or it's just the virus.

My daughter was 2 1/2 and we went through this. She had an ongoing fever for almost 7-10 days (maybe more...hard to remember....I had a newborn that was less than a month old and my back was out).

My husband took her to our ped. after day 3 (after we called on day 1). They took a urine sample (put a baggie in her diaper) and a blood draw. Nothing came back as abnormal. That was a Tuesday. If the fever didn't go away on it's own (after the meds--Tylenol and Ibuprophen-- ran out) or if a rash didn't appear (roseola) we were to go back on Thursday. No rash. My husband took her again. They did another urine sample by cathetor and another blood sample. They proceeded to give her a very powerful injectible antibiotic (it started with an R). They were treating for a possible blood infection. They had us bring her back on Friday for a check up. They gave her ANOTHER injection with the antibiotic. I went to this appointment and asked my billion questions. I was worried about luekemia, etc. I guess they ruled that out with the first blood test. Otherwise they would have sent her to Children's that day.

By the end of that weekend, she was better. Very scary!!!

As far as medication goes, you can piggy back Tylenol and Ibuprophen. That seemed to help the most. Tylenol is usually good 4-6 hours and Ibuprophen is good for 6-8 hours (read the directions carefully). Give T at 8:00 a.m. then Ibuprophen at 10:00 a.m. Then T at 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. and IB at 5 p.m. YOU MUST MAKE A CHART WITH TIMES to do this without messing up. Make sure hubs is on track with this too. You do not want to over medicate.

I suggest they take urine and blood samples if they haven't yet. Good luck mama and let us know how things go.

Take your child to the emergency room, there might be another underlying issue. Though the fever is intermediate, it seems as though she might have an ear infection. Children at this age, still have short eustachian tubes between their ears and jaw/mouth. I recommend that you provide her water after sugary drinks to cut the breeding of bacteria in the ET area, and have her sit up more, while she is drinking from her bottle or sippy cup. Children do not eat alot if they are not feeling well. they will not starve, as long as they are getting fluids, and some light meals, including soup/broth, jello, tea. I recommend getting her throat and ears checked, it seems that the symptoms are closer to ear infections. Mono is normally found in teens, adults, so if you are kissing her on the mouth, I would stop... Mono tests can be done in the lab in one day, there is a monospot test that takes small blood props and gives a presumptive diagnosis, if it is Mono, then they run a more definitive test, if that first one was positive... The tantrums might mean a ear imbalance, and loud noises aggravate her head hurts. So, keep the house quiet... Any fever for long than 24-48 hours, means there is something else going on. Have you gotten her all of her immunizations current? Try cold compresses and a dark room, after you visit the ER Pediatric doctor. Sorry, if me, if the fever remains, spikes, and vomiting, Im not going to wait. I recommend you get a copy of DR Spock's baby book, it covers these issues. IF she is not urinating or pooping, I think the more urgent visit is warranted... ALso, are you overdressing her/ Many mothers dress their kids for the north pole, when the home heater roars above 70 degrees, could you be over heating her? some child run warm, and have a higher temperature, a light nightie, socks, diaper, might bring it down, and readjust the heat, and put a sweater on you, if your cold... Kids get dehydrated in overly warm homes... Keep a record of her temperatures on a written paper, so you have an actual record of the temps for the doctors, take with you...
