Daughter Has Extra Sensitive Skin

The best trick my pedi ever showed me was using Maalox on diaper rash... that's right antacid. it neutralizes the acid in the urine/stool so that the bacteria doesn't eat your babies skin. applying ointment like desitin, etc just traps the bacteria in that's already there even though it does prevent new bacteria from getting to the skin. With my kids' diaper rashes I always use maalox first and then put the diaper cream on top... it's visibly clearer by the next diaper change. If it's a yeast infection, the maalox won't work but you can use an athlete's foot cream like lotrimin and that'll clear it up too. I've been there, done that as well. There's another type of yeast infection that doesn't respond to lotrimin, so if that doesn't work then there's another OTC topical you can try... but I can't remember what it is because I never had to deal with that kind of infection. I use bourdeaux buttpaste (no joke) on my newborn (7weeks tomorrow) she has never even gotten slighly red through all of the diaper changes. It is better than ANYTHING outthere. You can get a one pound tub at walmart online for $16.00 or buy a small tub in the store the packaging is yellow and has a cartoon baby on the from and exclaims "BUTTPASTE" in red letters. hope this helps

Have you tried an OTC cream that treats yeast infections/athlete's foot? I think the generic name is Lotrimin or GyneLotrimin. Just look for the ingredient clotrimazole.

I also started trying Aquaphor as my daughter's diaper cream because so many other moms on this site recommended it. It's a great product! I've seen it at Albertsons and Babies R Us.

My friend also recommended to bathe with some baking soda to soothe the skin.

It could be that your daughter is allergic to the diaper. When I switched from Costco brand TO Huggies, my son got a rash that looked like a diaper rash. Pampers made it a little better but he had it for a bit. Talk and show it to your doc, they can tell if it is yeast or allergic.

I had a friend who's daughter basically had a chronic yeast infection that constantly presented as a diaper rash. They would treat it but it would come right back. I don't know what the underlying cause of the yeast infection was though. Just a thought.

My son will be 1 next week and we just went through the same thing!! It went on and on for almost a month, my friend at work told me to try giving him an Aveeno Oatmeal Bath, like what you would do for chicken pox, or eczema. I went to the store and had to purchase it from the pharmacy, it was only $6.95 for eight packages, so well worth the money. Anyway, I did this for two nights in a row and it is gone!! I gave him his bath in the evening in the oatmeal, don't use soap to wash them or anything then just rinsed him off, put on the butt paste (by the way i think this is the best, i had tried all others) and then his diaper and within two days it was gone and has not come back. I too thought it could be his diaper or urine b/c he was eating different foods but it just seemed to be sensitive skin. When i was little my mom could only bathe me every 4 days with soap. Anyway try it, its very easy to use.
