Dark Brown Post Partum Bleeding
I am 9 weeks post partum. I had light to medium bleeding following my c-secion that lasted for four weeks. At 6 weeks, just before my follow up appointment, I began spotting dark brown. I mentioned it to my doctor and she said that it was normal. I started taking birth control the day after that follow up appointment. The spotting never really stopped and has gradually become heavy enough to wear more than a pantyliner and it is still dark brown. Anyone else experienced this?
So What Happened?™
Thanks everyone for answering my question. The bleeding has picked up but has remianed dark. I am going to call my doc tomorrow to give myself some peace of mind. I am having my normal period-like cramps, so I wonder if this is just my 1st cycle after the baby. I had 2 miscarriages last year and following my losses I had very strange periods.
I am also going to slow down a bit. I have been on the go since I had the baby. Have to enjoy summer before it is gone :) Maybe a little more rest will help my body figure things out.
Thanks again for all of the advice!

I am exactly 9 weeks post partum too and I am going through the EXACT same thing. I had my third c-section, but this is the first time I have had bleeding this long after delivery. I wish I had an answer, but my doctor told me this was normal and that with the birth control there may be "breakthrough bleeding"- so I'm waiting it out too, if you hear something else I would be interested to know...

I think it's a bit odd that you bled for so long after a c-section...didn't your doc clean it all out while he/she was in there? I've had two sections and never bled for more than 5 days...but that is not really your question, so I digress.
Your bleeding sounds pretty normal. Usually the dark blood is just blood that has been in there a while and is finally getting around to coming out. It doesn't mean anything bad but will usually come towards the end of your period or spotting since this is post surgery.
If you have another c-section in the future, see if your doctor iwill get it all out so you don't have to deal with it...that was one of the perks of the c-section! ;)

hey girl - I had my 1st c-section this time (my 3rd baby), and had a lot of spotting for quite a while - i'm almost 11 weeks post-partum & had some spotting last week (i'm also on b-control). I've been told that if it becomes bright red, and is not your expected time for your period, then you should call your doctor. The dark brown color indicates that it is old blood, not new.
good luck - sending hugs!

Yes I had this too. I also had this off and on during the month while being on the pill.

I had a C section but only bled from down there for about 2 or 3 (maybe 4 at the most) weeks. I never went back on Birth Control so maybe that has something to do with your hormones or something. However I would be kind of nervous and its better to be safe than sorry....go back to your OBGYN just to double check it

Yes it is normal. If you start getting a lot of bright red breaktrhough bleeding, or if it starts to smell really bad, then definately call the doctor...but what you are describing happens.
We have so many books and resources about pregnancy...but so few about the first two years after the baby comes! Do not stress about it, but keep track on a calendar to see if any patterns show up and keep an eye if the character of your lochia changes dramatically.
