Dandruff - Cheshire,MA

My daughter is nearly 11 years old and for the last 6-8 months she has had really horrible dandruff. We have tried Head and Shoulders and a prescription shampoo selenium (sp?) but nothing seems to work. We've tried washing her hair every day with clarifing shampoo and using the prescription shampoo 2X a week. Her hair still looks greasy the next morning. What else can we try?

What can I do next?

My husband has always struggled with dandruff. He has been using Nioxin Cleanser, available at Wal-Mart, and it has improved his scalp noticeably.

For greasy hair, try cleaning her pillow case more frequently, washing it every 3 days or so. There will be less oil transfer onto the pillow case, meaning less transfer back into the hair.

Good Luck.

We have a local store called Sally Beauty Supply and they have a cream that you can use for a "scalp" treament, I forget the name but it is a thick yellow substance in a tub and you simply massage it into the scalp, put her under heat (use a blow dryer to make her scalp warm). Do it once a week til satisified. If you have a Blaine or another Hairdressing school nearby they do them for ten dollars (around that), some hairdressers do it too. This might help and atleast put some moisture back into her scalp, helps with elasticity too. Then I'd make sure she is using a conditioner as well as a shampoo, some shampoos - even your water can dry out the scalp.

Hello M.,

Having had dandruff on and off in the past, I thought I'd tried EVERYTHING over the counter and prescription. The one shampoo that has worked consistently is Sebutone. You should be able to find it in any large drugstore. It comes in a 7 ounce plastic bottle; cost is around $12.00. Follow the directions about leaving it on the scalp for 5 min. before rinsing. Use every other day and your daughter should see improvement within a very few days.
I KNOW Subutone works; I still use it once a week, even though my dandruff is gone.

Hi M.!1I have very curly/dry hair and scalp...I swear by Paul Mitchell Tea Tree line.If you plan on trying it,get the shampoo and conditioner they work best when you use together!!It isnt too expensive, and once you get it under control she can just use it twice a week or so to keep it away!!Hope this helps!!Oh-it gives your scalp a cool/tingling feeling(fyi)..Good luck!!

you might try supplementing her with a fish oil and flax seed oil supplement- sometimes those fatty acids can do the trick- especially if she also has dry skin.
