Hello everyone! Anybody know what a realistic average daily formula intake for a very small (9pounds 10 0z) 2.5m old girl should be??? And which soy formula is better, one by Similac or one by Enfamil??

What can I do next?

I would say she should be taking about a 4 ounce bottle by now. i would say she is going to eat 6-8 bottles a day. i would say both formulas are good. i know the prosobee is good because my sister in law liked it but i do not know which one makes it. personally i gave my son the generic formula of what the doctor recommended and it saved money and he did well. bj's or sams will sell the generic or name brand and it will be cheaper for formula, diapers and wipes.

there is much more info out there...

please, please, please do research on soy formula before giving it to your baby- even if your pediatrician reccomends it. Other countries actually put black box warnings on soy formula. It should be an absolute last resort. soy is a cheap cash crop and big corporations are changing our hormonal makeup by keeping us in the dark about how soy (which is a plant based estrogen - good for menopause, not developing children)affects our bodies- not to mention the environmental toll to grow it.
I'm not preaching-- its just that people always think cuz its on the shelf at the store, it must be fine.

Hi M.,

Looks like alot of Moms have come through with some great advice already. 4oz every 4 hours is what my daughter did at that age...Sometimes more, sometimes less.

My pediatrician advised me (when I frantically called) that babies will eat as much as they feel is necessary. I suppose my point is, if they don't eat enough one meal, they'll certainly get it the next time.

We used the Similac Soy formula and it did work well for her. In fact, when it came time to give it up, it was tough!!

Hope this helps!

Hi--The average amount is between 2 to 2.5 times her weight in ounces. So, for example, if a baby is 10 lbs, she would be eating between 20 and 25 ounces a day. And, then of course, you would split that 20-25 ounces into 6, or 8, or 10 feedings per day.

I wasted a lot of formula, though, because I found it easier to make 4 ounce bottles, and then if she didn't want to finish it, I'd have to dump it. Also, I would see that sometimes she only wanted an ounce, sometimes she wanted 2, or 3 or 4 at a time. Sometimes, she was hungry every hour, and sometimes it was more like 2.5 or 3 hours between feedings.

At one point, I tried writing down how much my baby ate at each feeding, so I could try to make sure she got enough...but it was so hard to keep track. If you feed her when she asks, she's eating enough. Good luck!

Every baby is different...My daughter would only drink 4 oz bottles(even at 9 months). At this point, I think 25-30 oz a day, but I may be wrong. This is about what the babies i watched were drinking at that age. I used similac the entire time, but have noticed that enfamil is not as airy(no bubbles). The enfamil seems creamer....nice consistency.

Sears book says 2.5 x weight would be an average. So if you round her weight to 11 lbs. it would be 27.5. Some days may be less, some more. More importantly is weight gain (average is 4-7 ounces a week) and wet diapers. Their bellies are about the size of their fist, so just let her go her pace and keep the Ped aware of what is going on.

I am a fan of Isomil, but that's the soy we started out with, we don't know anything different. My older daughter started out on Similac in the hospital, but had difficulty with it, and we had a sample can of Isomil at home, so we tried it and it was a miracle for her. My younger daughter started out on it right away-we didn't even try to put her on the regular stuff first (what we went through the first week on milk-based formula with our firstborn was a NIGHTMARE).

As for intake...I guess it depends...at that age, my little one (who is almost 9 months now) was taking anywhere from 2-4 oz. every 3-4 hours. But my kids tend to eat a lot, lol.

Good luck.

dont quote me on this - and you'd want to double check with your pediatrician - but it sticks in my mind its like double the weight or something until like 6months.

and to the second question - between Enfamil and Similac i dont think there is much difference between the two - at least that the case as per my pediatrician. My daughter was on Similac and my son (who was also on soy) was on Enfamil- they are different consistency - but they are about the same as far as quality!

the amount of formula she should be taking in is half of her weight, so she should be drinking 4 1/2 to 5 oz every bottle at least and she should always leave just a little in each bottle when she is done, that way you know that she is getting enough. she should be eating every 3-4 hours, i believe the intake shoudl be around 32 oz. also the brand of formula is preference, my doctor recommends enfamil just because most of his patients have had better luck with it. i dont use formula due to nursing so i am not really sure on a personal level. hope this helps.

I can't give you the right formula amount, because my son was born at 8 lbs. 2 oz., and my daughter (which is now 3 1/2) was 7 lbs. 4 oz. when she was born.
As far as the soy type formula goes...my son uses Good Start Soy...he had lots of trouble with projectile vomiting with regular Enfamil, so we switched to Similac Lactose Free, and still had tons of vomit, not so projectile, but at least 1/2 to a full bottle worth, at each feeding, on the last day. We switched him to Soy Good Start and we saw a major improvement in the very first bottle and got consistantly better through each feeding. He was impossible to burp and always acted fussy too with the other formulas, and ever since he has had less gas and fussiness then my daughter ever had. We love it!
I hope this helps.
