My six week old has what lookes like baby acne on her face and neck. It doesn't seem to bother her, but I'd love to clear it up if possible. Any suggestions for products or other treatments that can clear up baby acne?

Hi T.,

Okay my daughter had this to around this age. They are summer babies and the heat and moister in the air. Sorry bad speller. LOL Any hoot, my mother-in-law gave me an old fashion remedy. A cotton white sock with old fashion corn starch they sell anywhere. I would apply it gently under her neck and body. This helped so much. I had NO diaper rashes and so much acne. This will calm down to once the weather gets cooler. I just recently started doing the same to my 2 yr old son for ezama. Its working, I have spent so much money on creams and nothing worked for this. I wish I would have tried it sooner for him. Try it. Good Luck! :)

My baby had that too... and a friend told me to wash his face - 2 - 3 times a day with a wash cloth.. and don't be scared to rub a little.. they get clogged pores too. well, it worked.. just use a little elbow grease (LOL) ... use the wash cloth.. rub a little.. and you'll see the babies face will clear up again... good luck.

Don't put anything on it. Just keep clean with mild or not soap. It will clear up on its own. My son had it and the pedia said it was hormonal from the pregnancy and to just leave it alone.

It does clear up on its own and it's probably better for your baby's skin to let it clear up naturally rather than putting potentially irritating products on her skin.

Both of my daughters had this, and just keping the face and neck area clean helped. A quick wipe with a wet washcloth was very helpful

we added a few drops of tea tree oil to our california baby lotion shampoo and that actually helped (to clarify, i used that for his hair, not his face -- he also had some cradle cap on his head but i think it ultimately helped his face, too.) i think they also make a tea tree infused product. careful not to overdo it; it can get a little stinky!

it will go (eventually) away with or without products, promise!!

we went throught this with both of my kids. We were told to gently wash face twice a day with cetaphil face soap. It is very mild. It helped but did not take it all away. I was told that it has something to do with all of the hormones between baby and mom. I once read that breastfeed babies are more prone to have it but it also has to do with moms hormones baby got before birth. With both of my kids it was gone around 3-4 months and that is normal. Try to remember your baby does not care. But I know how hard it is to look at your newborn and have thier skin not be perferct. Good Luck to you.

That is very common, both my sons had it. Their ped said to leave it alone, just wash normally (don't overwash) and by 3 months or so, they would get that gerber skin. TRUE!

Their skin is so new and delicate and just aclimating to the world, that acne is your baby's way of getting rid of the extra hormones, etc that you gave it during pregnancy. If it doesn't go away over the next 2 months or so-then have them look at it for eczema, but most likely it is not.

Both my kids had it and it is very normal for newborns to go through this. It's just their hormones and skin adjusting to their new surroundings. Avoid using any products and the acne will clear up on its own in a couple of weeks.

my little one (now 13 weeks) had it really bad too. Don't put anything on it, keep it clean. I actually put some breastmilk on her face too, and it did clear up nicely.

I know that you want to help clear it up but the best advice is to just leave it alone. It will go away. It doesn't last long and you will not even notice it after a while.

Just let it clear up in on its own. My son had it really bad around that age also. It goes away and it is not uncomfortable for them, so don't be worried.

Hi T.! My lil one is 3 wks old and she also has a case of baby acne on her face. The doctor told me not to put any lotions on her face, only use a warm wash cloth and wash her face with it daily. Also, just to make you aware the heat and any fussiness will aggravate the acne more...

It's just baby skin getting used to being in air and not fluid. You will make it worse by treating it and that stuff should not be used on babies. Just let it clear up on its own.

I had the same problem with my baby. Just wash her face with either a cloth and warm water, or a mild baby soap and water. I also used Aquaphor, on the advice of a friend. I didn't believe it would work, because I figured something oily on acne would make it worse, but it cleared it right up! So definitely try the Aquaphor--it's good for diaper rash and other things later on, so it won't go to waste.

Congratulations on the baby!

My pediatrician recommended Aquafor. It is a bit like vaseline but it helped sooth my daughter's skin. A little goes a long way, fyi. The acne will clear on it's own in good time. I know you want to fix it but the less you mess with it the faster it is likely to clear up.

Hi T.. Baby acne is very normal. It usually is a reaction to the left over hormones from pregnancy. Some of your hormones were transferred during your pregnancy to the baby and it takes about 2 months for the hormones to "leave". Any baby lotions, baby washes etc should be free of dyes and perfumes. Any products you put on your baby should be as natural as possible. It usually bothers the Mommy more than it bothers the baby. Don't worry it will go away.

A little about me:

I am an RN who runs a business called Mommy101, helping parents and their newborns during those initial months. Also a mother of 3 beautiful girls and married for 14 years.

My Baby doctor recommend CETAPHIL LOTION and it works.Ask your baby's doctor about it.
I had to stop the Johnson baby oil and lotion.
Hold baby with clean hands. No kissing on baby face.
Also Dove fragrance free soap.

My little one, now 12 weeks, had the worst acne in the world and the Dr. said leave it alone! It will clear up in a few weeks... I just washed his face with the regular bath routine and it did clear up in a couple weeks.. It's all hormones and there is nothing you can do about it... I would just leave it alone and let nature do it's thing.. P.S. If you are taking photos..one word - AIRBRUSH

Hope this helps Jul

Hi T.!

There's a chance that it could be heat rash. My daughter is 1 and she got it quite a bit last summer. If it is heat rash you can get rid of by putting a little cornstarch straight out of the box on it. Just be careful not to get it in her eyes.

Good luck!
K.
