Cupcakes - When to Frost?

This seems like a silly question but important to me at this very moment:) With 3 kids (4yrs and under) I caved and went the Duncan Hines route for daughters half birthday at school tomorrow. Should I frost the cupcakes (Ducan frosting too) tonight or tomorrow morning? If I frost them tonight do they need to go in fridge? I know I have many years of cupcake making ahead of me, just need to get the tips and tricks under my belt. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I ice them as soon as they are completely cooled. May be about 3 hours just to make sure..

I do not put them in the fridge, because they will sweat when they warm up tomorrow. Instead I place them in a 9x13 cake pan or an open flat box and then cover them lightly with waxed paper or saran wrap.

I always make butter based or cream cheese based icing, and do not refrigerate them them.. Of course we have air conditioning. Never had a problem.

Sugar is an awesome preservative, you can leave butter-based frosting out for several days with no problem because of the sugar (thank you Alton Brown, for that little bit if knowledge).

Frost them whenever you feel like it, as long as the cupcakes are cool from the oven. :)

Frost tonight, and do not refrigerate. Also, check with the school to see if you can send home-made goods. Most schools do not allow this due to allergies and cross-contamination in home kitchens.

I freeze m cupcakes and then frost them while still frozen before I am going to use them. Never refrigerate cake/cupcakes because it dries them out. You can frost them after they have cooled, but I find it is nicer when they are frozen. Leave them at room temperature or freeze them after you frost them.

Frost them tonight and don't refrigerate them unless you get cream cheese frosting.

Have you asked at school if this is allowed? Most schools now all treats must be prepackaged. We went the route of rice crispy treats. You might want to call to be sure. With all the allergies most schools don't allow home made years anymore.

packaged cake mixes are one of the few things that i think really work. cakes from scratch are great- but so are duncan hines!
frost 'em tonight. you'll be busy tomorrow. they'll be fine, so long as you wait for the cupcakes to cool.

I ice as soon as they are cool and refrigerate because I make icing from butter and powdered sugar. I'm guessing that since the canned frosting isn't dairy, it doesn't need to be refrigerated.
