Im looking for an affordable crib mattress and considering the Ikea line. Does anyone have any likes or dislikes with these mattresses (specifically comfort and quality)? Does anyone have other suggestions for a comfy mattress for under $80? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi C.,
Both of my girls have used the Kolcraft crib mattress purchased at Wal-Mart. Price is $35-40. A friend of ours gave us their old crib with an extra firm mattress. It was so uncomfortable for my daughter that she wasn't sleeping well at night. We bought the one from Wal-mart and she started sleeping just fine. Haven't used the IKEA mattresses so sorry, I'm no help there. :) Good luck!

Snuggle spot...It is a baby bed/pillow that makes a baby feel like it is being held when you cant hold it. www.laneybug.net

I don’t know about you but I had a spoiled baby that only liked to sleep if someone is holding her. I got tired of sleepless nights so I invented this pillow that I call the Snuggle Spot. The pillow snuggles the baby so they feel like some one is holding them and they are safe. Babies love it, the first time I put my daughter in it she slept 9 hours straight and every night since! I put her in the pillow fully awake with a full belly, and swaddled. Since the pillow snuggles them the swaddle stays intact! I recently went out of town and I did not want to pack the portable crib, changing pad, etc. so I just took a chance and only took the pillow. It was amazing, even in a diff environment she slept all night. I just put her in the pillow in the bed next to me or on the floor next to me. It is the perfect Co-sleeper! I changed her diapers in it, She likes to watch colors and lights of the TV so i put it in front of the TV. It fits perfectly in portable cribs and in regular cribs. My Daughter has reflux and has to be elevated so that her formula stays down, The pillow slightly props her up so that she is comfortable and stays clean!!! If you have and questions or concerns or want to place an order feel free to send me a message. The pillow is totally custom, you can pick the fabric, name or saying.

I would go into a second hand store for the mattress; your baby is only going to be in it for maybe two years ... Once Upon a Child in Ann Arbor is great.

We just went to walmart and purchased a mattress, and have not had any problems. I know that they also sell them farily cheap at meijer and burlington coat factory. My stepson used the crib mattres, and now my daughter is useing it. So it's been through many years of use, and still is just fine.

All baby mattresses are going to be stiff and hard, and that's so they don't get their faced buried into the mattress.

We used the IKEA mattresses for our twins and had no problems with them - check sizes carefully as they might be Euro size rather than US so sheets etc may not fit..

Dear C.,
I am so glad I saw your post- I am in the process of reading a book about SIDS, "The Cot Death- Cover Up? by Jim Sprott. Please read this before you buy a mattress.
A forensic scientist in New Zealand basically has proven that crib deaths are caused by the fumes given off by the flame retardant chemicals sprayed on baby mattresses/ and a combination of a fungal growth that feeds off of the plasticizers. It is more prevalent in used mattresses, as the fungus has had a chance to grow more when used by several children. They make mattress covers with vent holes on the bottom side. Check out the contents of the mattress and only use cotton bedding and natural laundry products- no detergent or fabric softeners- this adds to the problem. They eliminated crib deaths when following these recommendations, but we are slow to change over here. My son and wife ordered an organic mattress and I am so thankful now, after reading this book. A good resource book is 'Green Goes with Everything' by Sloan Barnett- all about safe products. I have tons of info to share- please let me know if I can help you. I use green products made by Shaklee and absolutely love them. Please spend whatever it takes to buy your baby a safe mattress. Best Wishes, M., RDH

We purchased our Mattress when we purchased the crib and other furniture. I believe we went to Baby's World or Baby's Room - something like that. I believe most baby mattresses are made to hold a specific weight and you need to keep that in mind.

Anyway, something to consider: Aside from getting what you pay for, your child is on this for almost two year's or longer. (Our son did not go to the 'big boy bed' until he was three & a half - as he outgrew the toddler bed (crib converted.) The springs tend to give out, as ours did. Our mattress was nice as it was two-sided in stages. The one side was for Infants while the second was for Toddlers. I'd say we did get our use out of it.
