Hi moms,
My son just turned nine months old this week and he is not crawling. Am I alone on this, has anyone ever had this happen? My other two were walking at 9mths/10mths.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hi moms, thank you so much for all the advice. To answer some of your questions, he is rolling over, sitting up, trying to say words, pushes his head up, just not the crawling. But his Pediatrician said he will get there and for me to be patient and not to compare children (which is something that I should never do). Again, thanks to all you.

I am anxious as well for my 8 month old to start crawling. He really wants to crawl and I can tell that he is frustrated. My daughter did not crawl until she was 11 months old and then went straight to walking within a month. Sometimes its nice when they are late crawlers because you have more time before they start getting into things!!

You cannot compare your children as they will progress on their own pace. To be walking at 9/10 months is very early! But for a child to not be crawling at 9 months is fine. Check out this info "Average vs Normal":

Don't worry! He's fine!

I'm sure you've heard these trite words before: every child is differenet, all mature at different speeds. It isn't so critical that he crawl or walk on the same schedule as his older siblings, and, frankly, the youngest has all kinds of entertainment without going anywhere -- there are two other very mobile children in the house who can fetch, who move around and cause excitment, etc. What IS important, however, is what he CAN do. While not crawling, are his physical skills increasing ? None of my children walked befoe they were 1 yr old, but they all walk now. . . He will get there . . . just realize that the impetus to move isn't the same when there are others around who will move for you. :-) (My sister's youngest -- of 5 -- didn't talk until well after 3 years old. He'd developed a sign language the rest of the kids totally understood and they did whatever he wanted. Why talk ? And, yes, he's 100% fine and in college now)

My 2 year old didn't crawl until about 1 year!!! She started walking shortly thereafter. I too was worried but she sat up all the time and the doctors kept assuring me she would and in her own time she did. Hang in there it will happen :)

I agree with all the other posters that your son is unique and special and won't fit all the "boxes" on the development chart. Having said that, are there any other areas where you are concerned? If so, it may calm your fears to have him evaluated. I don't know the differences from state to state, but Pennsylvania's early intervention program is free and open to any child. Both of my kids went through early intervention - they were born prematurely and we just wanted to make sure we were doing all the right things with them. If it's just the crawling, I'd say to give him some time - he may skip right to walking without ever bothering with that mode of travel :)

My daughter who is now 10 1/2 months old didn't start crawling until a few weeks ago. She is now crawling all over the place (we've had to put up the baby gates and everything!) It is so true that each child develops at their own pace and some kids actually skip crawling all together. I have also heard that kids usually excel (ie are ahead developmentally) at either phsyical or social/communication. My daughter is definitely not breaking any speed records with her physical developments, but has consonent and vowel sounds far beyond what is expected at her age. Your son might be the same way. Don't worry about your little man (of course easier said than done) and enjoy him being stationary while you can!

My girls were the same way--all 3 of them. And then they never walked until almost 14 months (which was very nice :) ). I also sit a lil man who outright refused to sit up on his own until almost 10 months and only started to crawl when he was close to 11 months. However, when he finally started to do things--he did everything all at once. My pediatrician informed me that babies can not develop mentally and physically at the same time. I would say you lil man is probably very smart for is age, and that's nothing to be concerned with. He'll get there when he's ready.

You don't specify what he *is* doing. Does he sit up, scoot, roll over, etc.? Having 2 others you should trust your instincts. Are you concerned about any other aspects of his development? If not, then he is probably just a little late, and will get there when he is ready. My friend's 3rd was late walking because her other 2 would get whatever the baby wanted for him, so there wasn't as much incentive for him to go get it himself, KWIM? Best of luck!

My son didn't even think of crawling until he was 10 months (he just rolled to where he wanted to go until then). If it matters, he hit every other developmenta milestone and has a 3.86 gpa as a senior (okay, now I'm braggin'! lol)

Don't worry. My son was older than that. Now he's 6 and perfectly fine and healthy.

My son always did the army crawl but when he learned to stand I gave him a push toy to walk behind and push so crawling he didn't do to much of. He also walked at 9 months
When you put him on the floor try to put him on his knees and hands and then get down on the floor or have one of your other kids do it. Maybe he'll copy you. Had to do that for my daughter who was behind in everything.

Don't worry about it. Each baby is different. My daughter didn't crawl (or get her first tooth for that matter) until 10 months and then one month later was walking. I always felt that it was due to the fact that she had always hated tummy time and therefore really didn't want to have anything to do with crawling. So my advice is to just keep trying to encourage the crawling, but don't worry too much :)

My first born who is now 4 years old crawled at 9.5 months the same day he got up to walk, never really crawled after that either. Now, my second is almost 9 months and he rolls all around the floor and gets up like he is going to crawl but hasn't done it yet. Just remember all babies do things on their own time frame, also some babies never crawl. My nephew is 1.5 years old and never crawled, didn't seem to understand how to do it or something but has checked out perfectly healthy with the pediatrician.

Enjoy your boys!!

My son was 9 1/2 months when he started crawling, 14 months with walking. If he has made his other developmental milestones (sitting, rolling) and is up on 4s and rocking, or trying to figure out the crawling thing, I'd not worry about it. Some kids skip crawling entirely. Ask your ped. at the 9 month check up, but I'd guess (if he's made all the other milestones) that he's fine.
